I absolutely love how more focus been placed on their relationship in the past few years. I know some people ship them, but I personally see the two more as siblings, which would be a perfect parallel to Sonic and Tails sibling dynamic.
Knuckles and Amy as a duo were always interesting to me *because* they're not attracted to each other. Think about it, who is the biggest character of the opposite gender these two usually interact with? It's Sonic for Amy and Rouge for Knuckles, whom they are attracted to respectively. Teaming up Amy and Knuckles gives them the opportunity to think and talk about other things.
@@rainpooper7088We also need more Sonic and Rouge teamups. Both of these pairs have some similarities to draw on.
Knuckles is driven by duty Amy is driven by love. They're both incredibly strong. And both value security and stability.
Whereas Sonic and Rouge are both defined by the value they put in freedom. They go their own way, going where the *wind* takes them, and don't want to be tied down in one place. And they both have a nonchalant, quippy attitude.
I wonder, if Sonic and Rouge had an adventure together, would they get along because they both joke their way through situations while winging it, or would they start annoying each other because they both talk and quip too much?

@@vision4860I think Sonic and Rouge would make jabs at each other's motives, while spinning them into light hearted jokes. I don't think they'd have bad chemistry, but they'd definitely clash if the situation was right.
@vision4860 Hard agree. I feel like where other characters would try to reign them in like Tails, Amy, or Knuckles, Sonic and Rouge would keep egging each other on while being super sassy the whole way and it'd be hilarious
I love seeing a sibling dynamic between Amy and Knuckles! When I was a kid and first saw pictures of all the characters, I just assumed that Amy was an echidna and Knuckles’ little sister, so seeing them fall into sibling roles is like a piece of my childhood
4:57 Fun fact, that trap door in the Archie series is called a "Zoot Chute", and I kid you not. Ken Penders went out of his way to ensure he had copyright ownership of that stupid trap door. Whether this is a sly reference or an uncanny coincidence, I can't tell- but either way I find that hilarious.

I love the what Amy & Knuckles are portrayed here, especially Amy. She's very cute, playful and sweet and she's got a bit of an edge to her, just the way she should be.
The framing of the scene where Knuckles is already halfway inside the trapdoor door also reminds me of when he popped out of the manhole in Sonic Adventure 2 after Aquatic Mine, which incidentally in another occasion where he meets up with Amy (and Tails). Probably overthinking it, but it's what that immediately made me think of.
9:05 oh my god I love this so far, and especially here, Knuckles asking if it's rude or polite to say yes, because he's so secluded and doesn't know how to talk to people. Remember kids Knuckles isn't stupid, just ignorant and an introvert, THIS IS KNUCKLES, not some meat head.
The Knuckles Tribe indeed used to be peaceful before Pachacamac took over and started warring with other tribes in order to enrich his own. We're not given any information about these other tribes so one of them could indeed be human.
There is also the matter of Angel Island's name. There is only one angel in all of Sonic canon that I know of and it ties Knuckles, his tribe and to a lesser extent the ancients to the most mysterious entity in all of Sonic canon IMO, the Statue Savior. First appearing on Little Planet's good future of Wacky Workbench stage 1, the angel has started to reappear again thanks to Amy's fortune cards. Considering the artwork on the other positive cards, (Master Emerald and Chaos Emeralds) that holds some heavy implications.
Yeah I remember in adventure Tikal said that her Grandmother was a peaceful ruler before her father's rule.
I think during her rule or sometime before her rule they could've been at peace with humans.🤔
I like the idea of knuckles having people help him on angle island but not the restoration. I think Mighty and Ray would be a perfect duo to help knuckles. Mighty is tough do not worried about him getting hurt and Ray could fly it glide? So he could keep an eye in the sky. A great way to keep angle island safe while knuckles is away. However I don’t think they have been in these comics. :(
They have been in the comics but only in the classic sonic issues, but heres to hoping they show up in the modern run one day

It would be swell but Knuckles holds the place as a sacred shrine. He’s going to be very difficult in trusting others especially after Eggman’s treatment back in S3 and SNK. When all you know of the outside world are thieves and Eggman, you’ll be very paranoid and hard to trust too
@@KingRumar knuckles does have a bit of history with the Chaotics. And in the sonic mania + trailer we see knuckles and mighty fist bumping so I could see him more open to them helping out on Angel Island. Much more than say Rogue or Shadow. But I have no power over it, it’s just something I think would be nice. Adds a use to 2 characters that are were remembered a few years back with nothing special about them going on.

I feel like the trapdoor can be explained as maybe Eggman built these for Knuckles. Think about it, its a quicker means of transportation to make it easier for him to distract Sonic during the Angel island incident in Sonic 3! I mean, unless Knuckles has Metal Forgery skills then it's prolly Eggman's doing.
It’ll also help establish a relationship as he gets what he wants as the two fight each other. A tunnel system with trap doors and hatches would be quick work for his robots to build and he can focus on studying the island unimpeded.
The trap doors and other contraptions on Angel Island might have also been built by previous Echidnas. It's not the only thing we've seen built by them on the island.
@@Spottyboxx yeah, but usually that's more or less Stoneworks and Woodworks in terms of Echidna tech. Besides, if the trapdoors we're made by the echidnas, wouldn't they be more rusted?
@@DJtheMJ Probably. That's why I said might because both ideas sound plausible. Plus the fact Echidnas inventions range from basic things like pillars and spears to high tech sci-fi stuff like those red teleporter orbs in Sky Sanctuary.
@@Spottyboxx Do we know for definite that those teleporters are of Echidna origin, though? Think about it, the last time we saw Sky Sanctuary, it was full of Chao *and some Ancient technology, including a Cyberspace portal.* It's entirely possible that before they developed into the Chao, the surviving Ancients who had fled to Angel Island built some of the higher-tech devices we see around the place.

As someone who's been critical of how Modern Amy was handled/written under Ian in earlier issues, I give my complements and appreciation for how she is written and characterized in this.
She feels a lot more Amy to me and it does my heart good. Artist did amazing bringing it all to life too! Van't be stressed enough. I liked the little acrobatic jump visual with Amy for example. Does a lot to convey her personality.
Definitely enjoyed this one a lot!
I like their brother-sister relationship
This comic kinda cemented the bond between Amy and Knuckles for me. I always thought these two would have some sort of best friend/sibling connection, being that they're both strong powerhouses that you shouldn't get on the bad side of XD
I do hope we see more characters bonding and getting to know each other, this comic was a nice read :)

Tbf he kind of was in S3(&K), however the traps were more than likely made before the burly red echidna n he’s just accustomed to every nook and cranny. He seems to have the asset to make traps on the fly.
Echidna saliva irl is like glue, so I just always kind of imagined him spitting on things like a tough guy when making the traps to hold them together.
Wow, jeez yeah I don't think since Adventure 2, and arguably Sonic Advance 3 since you can pair them up, have we seen Knuckles and Amy going off each other. Even then, very little, scene I specifically recall also had Tails there with Amy in his mecha and Knuckles just pops out of a sewer. Knuckles makes a comment in the fight against Team Rose in Heroes, but it's directed at Sonic "are you playing with that girl's heart again Sonic?", cool to see these 2 duty bound, strong armed characters team up.
The artist did such an amazing job.
Each panel from top to bottom I enjoyed the details.

Thank you for this series because it's just nice for everyone to gather around a comic and just enjoy it.

Is it just me or is the relic Amy shows knuckles a relic from Sonic Adventure. One of the stone statues that lead to the door to the past. The ones that lead to Lost World zone.

EDIT: Oh yeah, while the trap door could be an early Archie reference, I see it more as an explanation
of those moments in S3&K where we see Knuckles behind the scenes, like activating the wind in Mushroom Hill
They could pull a Sonic Advance 3 with the characters where in each issue different character pair off with each other a developing bonds that make them a complete family when they're all together.
15:43 That's something I truly miss from Flynn's initial Archie run, the game castes were allowed so much more freedom in their depiction.
Archie Sonic 175 is still to this day one of my favorite issues. And Is something the Mandates in Sonic IDW won't allow to happen again.
And that's truly a shame especially since the comic is starting to dip back in to the idea that Mobians and Humans do share the planet.
A conflict over GUN the United Federations and the other human nations, leaving the mobians out to dry during the events of Sonic Forces and the Metal Virus Saga would be an interesting plot point, that unfortunately I don't think will be explored.

Very happy to see that the relationship Amy and Knuckles had in Archie is carrying over to IDW. I always thought it was lazy how they're usually just written to be mildly annoyed with one another with not much else to it. X, Boom, Generations, Rush, most of the 2000s games that featured both actually… Only 2000s game I recall where these two specifically respected each other was Chronicles.
It seems that SEGA now wants to market Sonic, Tails, Amy and Knuckles as a quartet and the way Knuckles and Amy were usually written towards each other would be a pretty big stain on that, so I welcome the less common but more natural approach.
Amy is impossible to hate in IDW, shes just too genuine and compassionate. She'll wear down *anyone*
When my sister reintroduced me to Sonic (I only ever got into when the first movie came out then I just forgot about it)
My sister said “these two are brother and sister” (referring to Amy and Knuckles)
I said “really?”

It shows how while yes, Knuckles is a tough grumpy dude. He’s also just a real down to earth dude as well and does have a soft side

What I like about Knuckles is, there’s more to him than meets the eye. Behind his brutish, and stoic nature, lies a respectful loner that has a great passion and love for nature and history. Specifically, the history of his people, and I suppose the Chao and Ancients at this point. He does more than smash and destroy. In his downtime, and when Eggman or another threat isn’t jeopardizing the safety of the world, Knuckles wishes to preserve and protect nature and the history that intertwines it. Though this doesn’t mean he gets lonely and secretly likes visits from Rogue or Sonic every now and then. But, given his character, he still doesn’t like it when conflict is brought to his island. He’s essentially a park ranger and a historian. Only, he patrols a whole island, and it happens to be his home.
I've always thought Amy and Knuckles would be great friends... something about it just works. Not a "relationship" ... just friends

As a kid I always had this thought that Knuckles n Amy would be fun to pit in a fangame of sorts, like a side scrolling Beat Em Up starring those working together two trying to break Sonic out of someplace. Knuckles attacks fast with finesse and speed, Amy winds up heavy hammer hits in mostly slow arcs, you get combo moves depending on positioning and input like Amy punting a roll-dashing Knuckles like a fastball into someone, Knuckles giving Amy some air-time for a hammer aerial, etc.
They're both on the brawny end of the team in their own ways and frankly i think it's fun to just break stuff with reckless abandon

I'm not reading the comic at the moment but I'm defenitinely enjoying the chiller vibe of this segement. I personally always appreciate being able to see characters interact more normally togeather instead of just when they're fighting all the time.
I genuinely think Amy suits Knuckles better than Sonic, platonically or not.
I mean she "suits" knuckles platonically better because obviously she likes Sonic more than that.

Wonder who Knuckles refer he trust beside Amy, it's a short list.
My bet are Sonic and Tails(any suspicion left he has on them are long gone since adventure), the Chaotix (not sure if all of them as Charmy is to young and tend to not be the most reliable), and maybe Blaze(I said it for the that IDW comic focus on Blaze, both are has a similar role and obligations, having a common ground over it).

I don't know if knuckles trusts blaze, they only spoke to eachother once, while from the sonic twitter takeover we know that there is a lot of respect between knux and shadow, so i'd say that he trusts shadow
Blaze and Knuckles barely know each other. It's bs, but it's true. The only time they canonically interacted she said like one line out loud that was actually directed at Knuckles, then dumped a rockslide on him and left. Blaze even pointed out that they're not well acquainted in the Guardians issue.

He's a teen and somehow the last echidna, meaning there were others at _least_ a few years ago(for them), even if only his parents. I want a Knuckles origin! I'm bored of the "OoOoOo, last of his kind, mysterious Master Emerald guardian" schtick.
They don't even play any of that up for the other characters, they just...are the characters. Knuckles? Nah, here's a mystery.

Come to think of it... Have they ever established or shown the first time Amy met Knuckles? The Classic spin offs like R and Drift don't have much story to them, and Adventure doesn't really do much with it. They just know each other by that point. Same with Superstars. They just know each other there.
I don't think we NEED something like this established or shown in a big way, but it's one of those trivial things that makes you think, y'know?

The ring reference could be a nod to Stardust Speedway's (Act 1) pulley in Sonic Mania, since those are yellow instead of blue and do look visually similar to the pulleys in Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

i hope no one minds i felt like sharing my little "head cannon" of a part of the Sonic universe that may only ever be a dream.
Long ago, fish that had adapted to vocally communicate with each other (this is important) came across a giant crystal where while near it were able to manipulate the area around them telekenetically. Using the power of this crystal (as they were able to carry it around at will) they used it to create machines allowing them to explore outside the water. After some hundred years they figured out how to link a portal to another planet. They then made use of this planet to experiment with the magical properties of various crystals and rocks from their planet so if something goes wrong they're home planet is never in danger. After a massive explosion, red land creatures commandeered what seemed to be the crystals the fish people were experimenting with to the planet they deemed expendable. Soon after, this is where Eggman gets involved, attempts to steal the crystal you know where this is supposed to line up.

You mentioned that the relic looks like a low poly model from SA1, but to me the relic looks exactly like the keys you had to use to get to zones like Windy Hill and Ice Cap in SA1
The trap door is probably just a side path knuckles made to get from one place to another quickly.

Just thought of a random head cannon on maybe why Marble Garden has human faces in the zone. Maybe one day the echidnas came across a human. And not recognizing or knowing what a human was thought of them as some sort of god or godly creature. Could be a possibility considering Little Planet also has those angle statues.
I'd like to know who the other characters Knuckles trusts are. Tails for sure, I guess Sonic despite being rivals. Rouge? Hardly. Team Chaotix?
I like to think he and Blaze formed a friendship, as did he and Shadow. I don't know the extent of his trust with Rouge, (ME stealer, I just think he's smitten with.)

Your ring/ pulley theory might be right but that color scheme reminds me of the pulley in stardust speedway from mania so it might be a slight retcon

Just letting us know where everything is, how far from each other they are, where the borders of Eggman's territory is, that sort of thing? 🤔
