- No More Jockeys is a game created by Alex Horne, Tim Key and Mark Watson.
HOW TO PLAY
On each turn, players name a person plus a category they fall under. That person and category are then eliminated, and subsequent people must not fall under that category. As more categories are added it gets harder, and eventually impossible, to name anyone new.

Hello, Watson here. No more people who - when you think of them - are actually in No More Jockeys. I'm commenting from my production company's address but it definitely is me. I don't often look at the comments, so it's only recently come to my attention that certain NMJ fans have made accusations like this. I've looked back at some of the videos and there's no doubt I do dick about with that multi-coloured pen and I keep the phone close at hand for challenges, and when you put it all together it does actually look worse than I would have thought. Let me be clear about this. There is much to be ashamed of in my Set 1 performance. I was once so pissed that I forgot my own second category before the third round. I let some golden opportunities slip away. Sometimes I was unable to think of anybody who has ever lived except Moses. Also, I have on occasion scrawled down an idea of a name I could say next (which is a moral grey area). What I have not done, and will not do, is written down categories. The idea of doing anything that might be classed as cheating would be an insult to my colleagues Tim and Alex, to the wider community of fans, to the entire population of the United Kingdom, and to God if applicable. Tonight we record Game 7 of the second set. In Games 5 and 6 my conduct will not, I think, be questioned, for reasons that will become clear. Until then, I'm not sure if I'll be questioned again, but from now on I'm going to be at pains to remove any question marks. No more pen. Phone out of the equation. Less jerking about and glancing around, even though tics are unfortunately very much in my nature. I'm a guy that gets up, puts his trousers on, goes to work, does the best he can. And that's the Watson I want you all to see. (I don't know if there's a way this can be 'pinned' somewhere but I'd like the statement to be disseminated as far and wide as possible.)
I don't think I'd be overstepping my mark if I speak for the community, the population of the United Kingdom and for God by saying that we'll be watching very carefully. Over.

I don't know if it will satisfy the people who've accused you of cheating, but I'll be sure to direct them to this comment in the future.

I always put the behavior down to natural fidgetiness. If I have a "complaint" about Watson-ness is that now I use the word "fiddly " a lot in my inner monologs.

You know, I have been asked how I am many times in my life. And being an honest man, I typically answer honestly, with how I am. But, truth be told, hand on heart, I have never answered question of how I am with "Nigella Lawson". That's an emotional state I think I have never had before.

Just to let the powers that be know, I would, when I think think about it, literally throw money at some official NMJ merch at this point. Rapidly becoming my favourite thing on the Internet.
I wonder, after Key got out, could Watto have then played Wodehouse, seeing as they now all know his first name? Not often that a successfully challenged name immediately becomes playable, due to the challenge itself.
And when you think about it, a reasonable interpretation of Horne’s category might be that “we,” collectively, don’t know their first name.
Brilliant as ever, semi-nakedness only raises the standard. Awesome.

I don't mind that it wasn't challenged, because I typically have mixed feelings at most about Horne's subjective cateogires.
If it were me being challenged I'd argue that it's not over the top by Icelandic standards, it's be like saying Lawrenson is too extravagant
@@thomasthomasson2319 Yeah Key would have had a field day with it if he were challenged. Watto tends to lie down and die. It would come down to if he could pronounce it, which he wouldn't.
I would argue that Icelandic second names aren't strictly speaking surnames.

While thankfully, the point ended up being moot, Mark's dispute regarding Room 101 is an interesting one, as it arguably *became* a panel show. My personal view is that if Harry Enfield was on Room 101 when it was hosted by Frank Skinner, that's a panel show appearance. If he was on prior to that time, that's a chat show.
I have seriously never gotten into a series like this before, just so good, the world needs more.

I don't know about next game, but I agree he's getting better! At this point he'd win against me for sure, but against Horne and Watson? Not so certain.
He's getting better at the game, but also closer to a breakdown. Every pianist in the land and every poker player worth their salt knows not to play angry. Key's tilted. His odds of winning and his odds of going out in the third round are just about equal.

I had Peregrin in my mind and when Watson said it, I thought that maybe we both just actually knew the answer. But no - we just went for the same absurd English aristocracy sounding name.
Pelham is an over the top first name but that would be absolutely fine.

For some reason, I was feeling really confident about Phillip.
I didn't even know it was a name. They were taking long enough guessing that I looked it up first and thought that was just a part of his longer last name that didn't make it into his pen name, until I realised no (other) first name was mentioned.
They always take such comedian level swigs of their drinks. I think you can probably rate comedians based on average swig size. These guys are masters of their craft.
Good game, swift, a lot of categories to keep track of. The players played well.
It was a good fast, start straight out of the gate. You could see Tim had been practicing and there's no shame in being match ready. It was just unfortunate that he cannot keep the categories straight in his head and makes some bad choices and is generally bad at this game that, when you think about it, he invented.
@@Lastielion I agree, this game and the last it seemed he'd been practising or getting ready. I was frustrated when he got eliminated, because I want him to come back and win again, but he's so far behind at this point.

This reminds me of a game I used to play with a couple of friends...
We'd get together and each bring a stack of trading/sports/playing cards. (Pokémon/Yugioh/Baseball/Basketball/Football/X-Men/Comics/Dinosaurs/whatever you could find/etc) We'd then play "War" and every time we placed a card in the middle, we'd have to argue why our card defeats the other two.
Ex: Charizard vs. Magneto vs. Barry Bonds... orrrr T-Rex vs. Michael Jordan vs. Spellbinding Circle... The arguments were epic lol, but we'd always come to a consensus winner because we wanted to get to the next turn. Also, we'd sometimes shuffle all of our cards together so we could argue different cases.

I play a game that's only about actors. The first person names an actor and a movie or show they were in. Then the next person name another actor from that same show/movie and something else they've been in. No repeats allowed. If you can't think of anyone, you're eliminated.
I am so bad at this game that when I play, the other players do their hardest to name people and movies/shows they know I'm familiar with so that I have a chance to last at least one round. It doesn't help that I'm bad with names. Every now and then the house rule is that I'm allowed to use a phone/computer to google stuff, and nobody else is. I still lose first.
Room 101 used to be a different format. I know it doesn't matter because there were loads more, but Watto had a point questioning that. I'm thinking Harry Enfield was a guest in the old format, where it was just Merton or that unfunny mockney-guy who used to present it, where they just had a chat with one guest about things to put into Room 101. Only when Frank Skinner revived the show did it become a panel-show format.
Was it Nick Hancock hosted it first? He hosted a few things in that era including a sports panel show iirc

Midwesterner here. I pretty much only watch British panel shows. UA-cam has tons. And I'm obsessed with No More Jockeys.
American here, too. I watch little (if any) Amerilcan TV. I've been in love with British comedy for decades and discovered a broader range of panel shows within the past year, though I watched the original Who's Line on Comedy Central in the mid 90's. (Think I stumbled across Taskmaster back in March, but found Would I Lie to You about 5 years ago.)
I'm an American, but I'm also French and I grew up with perfidious Albion's humour everywhere. It's a weird relationship we have with Britain, England especially, where we love everything they make but pretend they're our rivals and that we hate them.

Wish Taskmaster was available on other streaming platforms here. Not knocking youtube (thank you for showing it to us my overlord, heehee) but as I like to watch with the wife on the big screen, the commercials can be quite jarring. I'm always entertained by people having two first names (Les Dennis, Peter Mark), but PG Wodehouse looks like three surnames!
I once saw a book whose author was clearly displayed as "Les Roberts".
Background: It was large enough that I thought it was the title. I didn't know that Les is short for Leslie, back then. And I'm French.
So to me, it was a book titled "(The) Boobs"
I think about it whenever I see the name Les.

I really love this show, and was delighted to hear PG Wodehouse, my favourite author, get selected. 🤓
But I was disappointed that none of them knew it stood for Pelham Grenville. Extra bit of information: he was known as Plum for most of his life after early mispronunciations of his name.
What's your favourite book by him? I didn't know him and I'd like to give him a try but I don't know where to start. So actually, what do you think is a good book for a first reader?
@@Avistew My favourite two books of his are probably 'Right Ho, Jeeves' and 'The Code of the Woosters'. They both include much of the same characters and storylines and so if read in that order they're a good two to read as an introduction.
Wodehouse certainly won't be for everyone's taste in the 21st century. He wrote over 90 books between 1900 and 1975 and most of them are quite similar in tone and humour, so it all depends on whether his gentle and light hearted humour appeals to you. If it does, then most of them are enjoyable. If not, then I can't see any being very appealing.
I absolutely love the gentle, silly humour of his books. Especially the 'Jeeves & Wooster' and 'Blandings' series, and have read them plenty of times. Hope you enjoy them too. 🙂

I think he's doing better. I also think he got flustered when he made a couple silly mistakes and became too intense. I feel like he's the kind of person who performs way better when he's relaxed.

I would argue that the Ian Hislop category was “nobody who has been on A comedy panel show more than 3 times” but the examples they found for Harry Enfield he was on them a maximum of twice
Well-spotted. Horne cheezing it by putting what he meant in the text overlay rather than what he actually said. It's a shame the universe is not always just.

@@horseloverfat9634 Based on how Horne has acted here and elsewhere (notably cheating in House of Games by letting others get points when he obviously knew the answer), I don't think he did it to make himself look better. He was probably trying to clarify it for the viewer, or didn't even realise the confusion because he knew what he meant from the beginning.
I took “no more people who’s first names we don’t know” to mean that no-one knows their name, like Cuthbert. Not that only those three didn’t know their name
Key is playing this game like a fucking psychopath
I'm sore about the PG Wodehouse challenge. My interpretation of the spirit of Horne's category "No More People Who We Don't Know The First Name Of" implied that it wasn't possible to find out the person's first name - that it's not been released to the public, ever. Cuthbert hasn't been given a first name, he's only ever referred to by his surname. Therefore, PG Wodehouse is allowable because he *has* a first name that is in the public domain, and it's irrelevant whether or not Key was able to recall it on the spot.
The Edge was an example and it's very easy to find out his real name

I feel like that PG Woodhouse elimination was pretty harsh. I thought it was where "We" don't know their 1st name as in there isn't even a hint to their 1st name. I'd definitely argue that initials count as the person having a 1st name. It's not "The Edge" or "Wolf".
Yeah, I thought that too until it got challenged. Mind you, seems like Key misunderstood the category as "people we don't know a lot about" anyway.
I agree with you and interpreted the category in a similar manner.
But then I think he deserved elimination for a poor argument. Letting himself getting backed into a guessing game is the sort of tactic that will lead to a real dressing down at half time. Shocking stuff.
Poor defence from Key though. He should have argued that Horne’s category implied “People whose first names are not known”. Obviously Wodehouse doesn’t fit that distinction. But Key sealed his own fate with his terrible argument.
