I'm almost 70 and a bluegrass/country/delta blues/folk player and songwriter. I'm just plain working class folks who has never fit in with those who have attained or even aspired to higher social station. I'm from that broad class of Americans about which John Prine wrote.
I had been playing and writing since I was a young teenager when at age 22 (1975) in the Army I discovered John Prine. Utterly brilliant lyricist. No one could be funnier. Few could be as poignant. He could even make you laugh and shed a tear in the same song. He spoke truthfully, authentically and with compassion about real people and real lives. He combined simple, traditional chord progressions with sometimes surprisingly elegant melodies.
While John didn't have a great voice, it was more than good enough. More importantly, it was the perfect voice to interpret his own works. In fact he had the talent and stage presence to adjust his style and go more commercial to make bigger money, but he didn't.
I once had someone describe me as "The Poor Man's John Prine" without even knowing I was a big Prine fan. I thanked him for the compliment, but told him that I would make "A Poor Poor Man's John Prine." Then he said, you're probably right, but even that sounds like the title to a John Prine song.

Brian, Wonderful tribute to John Prine, I’m a huge fan and have loads of his music, unfortunately I never got to any of his concerts as I live between Ireland and Brasil. John is a huge loss to the folk music and the World in general. Rest in Peace John.

Love John Prine. RIP one of the greatest songwriters. I saw his Carnegie Hall show in like 2008 and it was the best show I have ever seen in my life.

Would be so much more helpful if Brian would play the cadence for a few bars. He says to get that cadence down but then doesn't play more than one time through without talking or moving on to the next chord. It's the one ingredient missing from Active Melody lessons. A loop of a rhythm to get into the flow of the piece before making chord changes or bends and slides and double stops...etc. Otherwise these are the most informative lessons I've found on UA-cam. Brian is the best at explaining why he's playing the notes/chords he's playing.

I will have to improvise a bit as my thumb will never reach over top and reach the string. My hands are to small. I have tried and tried but cannot do it
