I wasn't a fan of the Evoque until I sat in the back whilst my 11 year old son drove one at a Land Rover experience day, near Gleneagles. It easily went through deep mud, waded through a river (twice), up muddy banks...proper off road stuff in comfort. I walked away quite impressed!
Worst car my family ever had. The hybrid one. Felt like you were rolling over in every corner, drank like a 7 liter V12, broke a sensor in the sunroof and was imprisoned in the dealer for 2 months. Bought new, like putting money in a furnace.

There is a market for this sort of car. My wife currently has a Volvo XC60 AWD and doesn't do any off roading but as a district nurse in a fairly rural part of the UK she does spend a fair amount of her time driving down rather muddy, narrow and sometimes waterlogged farm tracks to get to people, often in inclement weather so some off-road capability and higher ground clearance is certainly welcome without having a massive car even though she never goes full on mud plugging. I've fitted a decent set of all season tyres and she hasn't got stuck once. Her old front wheel drive hatchback had to be towed out by a tractor on a few occasions when she got stuck. There's definitely a need for this kind of car. The Evoque and Audi Q5 were on the shortlist before we bought the Volvo. A full fat Range Rover or Discovery is too big and too expensive.
You are all wrong. The evoque was an ingenious car. It looked like it was from the future when it came out with its sloping roofline and sharp extremities and that two door body was a fun nod to the 2 door Defenders. It holds up today way, way better than many other cars from its time. It was perfectly capable off road, well equipped and not terribly expensive. The hate for this car comes entirely from the fact that it was bought almost exclusively by yummy mummies who couldn’t afford the big one and no-one ever took one off road, which is strange given that no-one ever takes a G wagen off road but you don’t hear anyone calling that shit. Get over yourselves. This thing sold like hot cakes and put LR back into steadfast position among their competitors.

It was the updated model, so I can't count the number of stares, waves that I got in it during the week I had it. Only car people seem to notice my F-Type. The Evoque drives and performs quite like a Hyundai Tucson I had as a rental a few months ago.
Regarding the diesel engines, earlier Evoques used the 2.2 same as in the X250 XF. Around 2015 or 16 they switched the 2l ingenium, an engine with a boat load of problems. Nice video 👍

The freelander 2 isn’t really this cars predecessor, as it went towards 2015ish, when the discovery sport (which is the successor of it) launched. Their really isn’t a predecessor to the evoque, they were mainly following the market with it back in 2011.
Not really. The Discovery Sport was the replacement for the Freelander 2 in the LR lineup (being the cheapest), but as the proposed little Discovery. The car thought and made to be the “third” Freelander was indeed the Evoque, since the Freelander 2 reached an upper public.

Early ones had a Ford 2.2 diesel. Ingenium was introduced to it around 2017 and is a 2.0. The Ford unit is more reliable by far but more noisy and thirsty. The ones with PiviPro infotainment will be post facelift with a better installation of the Ingenium with a close coupled DPF which ‘should’ increase its general reliability significantly.
I’ve got that 9 speed ZF in my Honda CR-V and it works perfectly. It’s not as if I have no experience of automatics either and have owned and driven a vast number of four, five, six, eight, nine and ten speed autos. I have a 2022 Range Rover full fat with its eight speed and a Ford Ranger with ten speeds which I rate very highly. The ZF in the Honda is interesting because although it has nine speeds it requires 70mph with a light throttle, or faster, to actually engage top gear; so most of the time it is effectively an eight speed. I assume that the JLR installation has similar similar gearing.
I remember when a karate instructor of mine bought one of these right after launch. Was quite amusing to watch this ~60 old Japanese guy get out of his shiny white 2 door Evoque.
We've owned a SD4 for 10 years and it's been the ideal all rounder, especially as we now live in a rural area. JLR invented a car that nobody thought they needed - until they did - and it was a great success. There's not much the car cannot do and has never let us down. The Ingenium diesels engines are suspect though and very much a case of buyer beware. A cracking used buy and plentiful too, so you can afford to be fussy.
The 2.2 diesel from the Freelander 2 which the Evoque launched with is a decent unit, it was also used in the early Discovery Sport and is now sought after until 2016 when they moved to the new Ingenium. We've currently have the 2.2D in our Freelander 2 and our Discovery Sport, suits them fine. The 2.0D Ingenium is plagued with issues. The Ingenium petrols are a lot better. I had a 2.0D Evoque and really liked it, I hadn't long passed my test and was more comfortable driving something a little smaller. Went from a Panda 169 4x4 to a Fiat 500X then the Evoque. I wouldn't mind having a drive in the rare 290HP Evoque, I'd imagine that would be a lot of fun.
Had one of these as a courtesy car for a matter of days last year. The loan was cut short as it kept going into limp home mode. Left my wife stranded on a dual carriageway. Had a bloke from LR assist try to fix it on my driveway twice. It ended up going back to the dealer on the back of an AA truck, and they replaced it with a Volvo from enterprise. Utterly embarrassing
To explain the infotainment, the car in the video is a base spec. I can tell that because it doesn’t have the Dynamic bodykit (extended bumpers, square exhausts etc). Because it’s a base spec you don’t get the updated widescreen stereo, which is called the Incontrol Touch Pro.
I like the look and the interior but it is too heavy, too thirsty and too small inside (specially the boot). And I'm a L322 owner so not afraid of JLR products (and as soon as my dog will pass away I will try to find one of the last XJ 😉).
When I worked at Solihull, we had all models bar the Freelander on our line. And I know I'm going to upset some people here, but the Defender was absolutely awful. It had sharper edges than a can of tuna, the worst being in the rear where the passenger benches were. It felt unfinished. The engines were gutless too. We did the military variant as well which was better due to the MOD extra's. Next in your queue could be a Disco, a Range Rover, & that's about it. But that 4.6 Range Rover was a thing of beauty. Yet today the Defenders attract more of a following. Give me a Toyota Landcruiser VX any day of the week, they are tanks.
I've yet to see a mk1 Evoque where the shut lines on the boot match up. So yeah, definitely a real Range Rover. Also, wasn't Posh a "design consultant"? She certainly didn't design the thing herself.
I always thought " new very expensive Freelander"., but now they cost between 10 to 20 thousand for top spec they could be a good idea. They still have reliability issues (can you imagine how many parts, seals, ball races etc. there are in 9 SPEED auto box.
Diesel Evoque, must be driven as if stolen, on a regular basis. Ask my brother, who drove far too slow and too local. £2,800 to replace the DPF which was totally clogged. Everyone said the same after this error. How often did you drive more than 15 miles at over 3000 RPM.
Not 100% about the Evoque but I recently bought a Discovery Sport, which is closely related as an evolution ofbthe Freelander 2. The model came out in 2015 and used the 2.2l PSA diesel. From 2016 onwards they switched to the Ingenium 2.0 diesel. I specifically hunted down a 2.2 with the 6 speed manual in an attempt to cut out the Land Rover bits that cause the most issues. Time will tell if that has been effective. I needed a 7 seater and wanted to upgrade to something a bit nicer than my Ford Galaxy which could also tow a (fairly small) boat. I was looking at a Kia Sorento, but just out of curiosity had a look at the Disco Sport, and a low mileage HSE innthe spec I wanted was £13000. At that price it seems a lot of car for the money, and I do wonder if their reputation for issues is driving the used prices down - anyway, I crossed my fingers and took the plinge, and so far it has been great. If only they did the full fat Range Rover with 7 seats though... That would have been very tenpting as a used buy.
I have owned an Evoque as a rare coupe. The body was beautiful, but not so the engine... A video of it being driven fast is coming along on my channel very soon 😉
Uhh! The Range Rover Evoque, I absolutely loved those things, they now scream square and soccer mom to me but I absolutely still am in awe of them… I would have to be in retirement to own one but I would do it nonetheless if I was desperate coz there’s no way am buying a hatchback at 80yo
Fashion over substance? Check. Expensive? Check. Unreliable. Check. Range Rover. Check. Will end up selling loads, customers moan….then buy another one and repeat.
My partner has a 2024 evoque hybrid. I really do hate it. I can't recall ever hearing a louder windscreen wiper motor in any car! Sounds trivial but honestly it drives me nuts. You can drown it out quite easily when you put your foot down though. The engine is petrol but sounds more like a diesel than any diesel I've ever heard and is very rough sounding and loud. For what is perceived and supposed to be a premium car it is very unrefined at anything over 3000rpm. Fuel economy averages low 30s which isn't exactly great either and range on ev power is about 20 miles which is useless to her as she drives from Glasgow to the midlands and beyond most weeks for work. It has broken down once so far, at about 20k miles and it was some software issue that even the AA guy couldn't explain but he did get it going. The brakes make a loud groaning noise every time you try to move slowly in traffic and the stupid touchscreen drives me mental. Turning the heating up or even turning on the radio is a chore. I know that last thing is common to most modern cars but there's no need for any of that. Of more concern is that sometimes you push the gear lever forward to select reverse and naturally expect it to go backwards but the car is still in drive and goes forward. Quite a few times that's nearly ended in tears. Anyway my personal review of the evoque hybrid is it's the worst way I can think of to spend 50 grand on a car. In case you're wondering, she got it because she liked the looks and image and it's the hybrid to save her money in tax as its a company car. I tried to talk her into a golf r but she wasn't interested 😢
So….. i like the car and always did Range Rovers that is… but as im looking to replace my 2011 C70 convertible with an XC60 with a D3 or D5 engine… i started thinking This you have here would be nice…. But then you drop the Dont buy a diesel bomb….. I need a diesel for towing my lovely Caravan…. Bummer !!!!
I must say that I don’t notice our 2017 Evoque Autobiography P300 changing gear except for the first two changes & even those, only if you’re trying a bit. Ours leaks. Windscreen, rear camera, rear light clusters. Other than that, it’s been a delight. Won’t be selling anytime soon.
This said it was uploaded just 3 hours ago yet the car being reviewed is over 6 years old, is that a fair review? The Evoque has had a complete overhaul since then. Or was this just re-uploaded ?
two days ago I was trying to park in Waitrose, a few spaces available, yet one was taken up by an Evogue that of course was taking up 2 spaces, very typical of the entitled people who drive these cars
As an evoque owner, one of the highest spec ones, this is the best small suv. Safe and very commanding driving experience despite its size. The fact that this used to turn heads like crazy, and still to this day. The petrol engine is genuinely fast and the car is very stable. Drove a macan s and id still chose the evoque over it. Also the evoque is very good off-road considering the lack of low range and air suspension. Overall luxury is amazing, people still get surprised at what the evoque packs to this day.
At least as an Evoque driver you won't be associated with the baseball-cap-and-shades wearing drive-like-a-pillock typical Golf driver common in the locality where I live.
I love Land Rovers, but have always hated the Evoque. Besides it being not a real Range Rover, this car is very well the one to blame for the “unreliable” fame of the make. Not comfortable, not capable, not spacious nor big… it was just a market niche car made to reach another layer of society, just like the Velar, that came right after it. Furthermore, I can’t quite understand how this car was thought as a Freelander 2 replacement. The Freelander was a lot more Land Rover than the Evoque can ever be.
@@AnyoneSeenMikeHunt if you’re talking about sales and marketshare, you’re taking commercially, as a business. If you’re taking about maker principles and identity, you’re taking about a car maker. The success of Land Rover and Range Rover as a car maker are the cars that stick to what purposes the company was founded for. Those cars currently are: Discovery, Defender, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover. The Discovery Sport is a mini Discovery, and it stands for it. The Velar is a market car that’s supposed to be a bigger Evoque, and the Evoque is even more. Those cars were created to reach layers and improve sales, getting money to finance the real cars of the company. Jaguar has lost its success as a car maker, and Rolls Royce has kept it for all those years without a single sale success.
Here in Ireland, where we get the cheap ass versions with halogens, manual is not that rare to see, and after driving a rental one well… I kinda get why people bougth them. Sorry not sorry
@ for some reason we get awful car specs. You can see the new Tucson (2025) comes with LED as standar in every single european country except Ireland, where, yes, it comes with alogens. Any “””cheap””” luxury cars with come with them as standard, even a 2018 E class. Dealers will get all of them as stock, so if you wanted a better spec you had to wait a paid a substancial premium. They do it because Irish cars are UK imported cars from factory and we had no choice.
@@SrRumeniguer So what you're saying is that JLR and others are purposely making limited runs of halogen lighted cars specifically for Ireland? Is it just the lights or complete poverty pack base only no frills models? Did the top of the range Evoque Autobiography come with halogens too? What about a proper full size expensive Range Rover?
Sorry, took one look at this when it was first released, and thought "Poseurmobile". It's an "influencer's car", with all that entails. I think it's hideous, a Chelsea Tractor for spivs, and frequently to be found driven by road rage Karens. Put a different body and a different badge on it, it may well be a decent car, but its reputation precedes it. Finding out that Posh Spice had a hand in it makes me want to break out the garlic and crucifix. If I want space, I'll buy a proper estate car. If I want to faff about off road, I'll buy a Toyota Land Cruiser, which is built better, far more reliable and depreciates much more slowly. If I want a sybaritic interior, I'll track down a W124. This? No. Wouldn't be seen dead in one.
No. You were not wrong. The definition of a stupid Chelsea tractor, but amped for even more stupidity. And the drivers... Oh my. dont get me started... pre selected for selfish , crap drivers and then some. Edit: TOTALLY on should have got a golf. Which would have been better for everyone. Literally- everyone.
@@SoWereDoingWhatNow I didn’t mean it specifically. Of course there are people who like the Evoque! But these are hardly the same people who likes the maker and buy their other products, because the full size Range Rover, the Sport and Discovery can be purchased for the same price, and those who just want a small Land Rover can just buy a Freelander, that’s cheaper, comfier, more capable and reliable
@@ogearhead2426 Well the video is SPECIFICALLY ABOUT THE EVOQUE FFS! Babbling, you're just babbling. LR fanboys are frekin annoying like flies. Sheesh. 🤨
The Evoque is not a Range Rover. Real Range Rovers have large V8 engines, are called Vogue and have a presence on the road that make other car drivers cower in their shadow. JLR called them Range Rovers to try to move it up market and sell more, all they did was water down the exclusivity of the Range Rover badge. They are Land Rover Evoques not Range Rovers.

I like the look and the interior but it is too heavy, too thirsty and too small inside (specially the boot). And I'm a L322 owner so not afraid of JLR products (and as soon as my dog will pass away I will try to find one of the last XJ 😉).
Hope that's a few years yet, then!
Comparison to a Golf is a bit out there Jay.
One can go through creeks, the other cannot.
I was in my early 20s when I learned that the Evoque was available with a manual gearbox. I am currently in my early 20s.
In Andorra and no photo shoot at the top of Pas De La Casa 😪
I like it. Yes, it's a massive LR shtbox and I'd never buy one but I like seeing them around.
I remember being told that they were a transit engine, because Transits started being stolen to be stripped for their engines
The 2.2 diesel, yes
I think that the transit engine (Puma) went into the classic Defender. The Freelander/early Evoque was a Peugeot unit i believe.
They have a “habit” of breaking , but better off road that you’d imagine
The Evoque has the honor of being the only production Range Rover in a Gran Turismo title!
😢
You do know that sheep head down eating, will not move. You can therefore use them to polish the sides of the car.
I have owned an Evoque as a rare coupe. The body was beautiful, but not so the engine...
A video of it being driven fast is coming along on my channel very soon 😉
This vehicle was not made by posh spice, she may well have had an infulence on some of the interior trim but that's it...
Glad to see you found the mens department for shirts, it makes you look 40 pounds better
Uhh! The Range Rover Evoque, I absolutely loved those things, they now scream square and soccer mom to me but I absolutely still am in awe of them… I would have to be in retirement to own one but I would do it nonetheless if I was desperate coz there’s no way am buying a hatchback at 80yo
It’s a design failure. Unloveable.
It is weird to see JayEmm's camera vertically inverted.
Fashion over substance? Check. Expensive? Check. Unreliable. Check. Range Rover. Check. Will end up selling loads, customers moan….then buy another one and repeat.
'...customers moan….then buy another one and repeat...' How absolutely British. 🤣
Love being described.
MY had one for 2 years it was okay but sitting in the rear on the UK roads was far from comfortable a real boneshacker
When a car can't get round a manufacturers own 'test track' Ie the Land Rover experience day course, then you know it's a bit...rubbish.
Ooh. New mic? You sound closer... like a few inches from my ear. 🙂
You could have save a lot of typing and simply said.... 'I drove one. It drove like a Land Rover car.'
If your partner wears too much makeup and listens to bad music then this is probably her perfect car.
The Evoque owner is the fiat 500 owner that had kids.
So….. i like the car and always did Range Rovers that is… but as im looking to replace my 2011 C70 convertible with an XC60 with a D3 or D5 engine… i started thinking This you have here would be nice…. But then you drop the Dont buy a diesel bomb….. I need a diesel for towing my lovely Caravan…. Bummer !!!!
I prefer a white 2013 3.0 diesel Range Rover Sport personally
Why on earth does a car need 9 gears, I've got 12 in the DAF XG I drive for work, I have to pull 27 tonnes of freight
I imagine it’s for better fuel economy and power delivery
I must say that I don’t notice our 2017 Evoque Autobiography P300 changing gear except for the first two changes & even those, only if you’re trying a bit.
Ours leaks. Windscreen, rear camera, rear light clusters. Other than that, it’s been a delight. Won’t be selling anytime soon.
The more J's head wobbles when he talks, the more ridiculous the elocution gets.
This said it was uploaded just 3 hours ago yet the car being reviewed is over 6 years old, is that a fair review? The Evoque has had a complete overhaul since then. Or was this just re-uploaded ?
It's a used car review. You've not been to this channel before have you?
What is not fair about taking a car and reviewing it regardless of its age? Actually the whole comment is strange Marc.
two days ago I was trying to park in Waitrose, a few spaces available, yet one was taken up by an Evogue that of course was taking up 2 spaces, very typical of the entitled people who drive these cars
Or just not real bright. Stupid is not reserved for the entitled.
Owned by tastless people who nane their french bulldog Luna
As an evoque owner, one of the highest spec ones, this is the best small suv. Safe and very commanding driving experience despite its size. The fact that this used to turn heads like crazy, and still to this day. The petrol engine is genuinely fast and the car is very stable. Drove a macan s and id still chose the evoque over it. Also the evoque is very good off-road considering the lack of low range and air suspension. Overall luxury is amazing, people still get surprised at what the evoque packs to this day.
The ladys range rover
I believe you’re talking about the Volvo XC60, even though I deeply and absolutely love Land Rovers.
Wasn't it the seating and interior that she had an input with ? Also didn't these non Range Rovers have that dreadful ingenium engine in.....
People say posh spice. I say mondeo MK3 chassis
At least as an Evoque driver you won't be associated with the baseball-cap-and-shades wearing drive-like-a-pillock typical Golf driver common in the locality where I live.
Expensive shopping trolley.
You (and 99% of the buying public) forgot about the convertible.
Thank God. That obnoxious thing.
No thanks, I'll give it a miss.
Freelander 3
Jeremy Clarkson MK2.
Not really. Distinct absence of hyperbole, affectation or tortured metaphors.
@RichardHarrold1991 Nice
Kept the economy booming in the recession-2.2 sd4 pure. What was pure?.
The profit margin.
This car was the start of Landrovers decline. Absolutely awful.
Start? LR were well and truly in the weeds well before this happened.
@@AnyoneSeenMikeHunthe meant decline as a car maker. Not commercially.
@@ogearhead2426 I meant as a car maker. The original Evoque is one of the company's greatest sales success stories.
@@ogearhead2426 Oh dear, you're one of 'those LR people'. 🙄 I just felt the comment thread die.☠
Always hated the exterior.
Left hand for watches 😡
Here in Ireland, where we get the cheap ass versions with halogens, manual is not that rare to see, and after driving a rental one well… I kinda get why people bougth them. Sorry not sorry
Halogens? Like just why?
@ for some reason we get awful car specs. You can see the new Tucson (2025) comes with LED as standar in every single european country except Ireland, where, yes, it comes with alogens. Any “””cheap””” luxury cars with come with them as standard, even a 2018 E class. Dealers will get all of them as stock, so if you wanted a better spec you had to wait a paid a substancial premium. They do it because Irish cars are UK imported cars from factory and we had no choice.
@@SrRumeniguer Has this anything to do with oddball Irish lighting regulations like the USA had?
@ Not even, theyre just saving money but chargin the costumer the same money
Spivs and Karens need cars too. This car was not made for you but them.
No
No.
It has no cachet. You can buy a "real" Range Rover for similar money.
Which one is a 'real' Range Rover?
Agreed. And if a real Range Rover is too big for you, just buy a cheap Freelander 2. But an Evoque? Nah
@@ogearhead2426 Why would a girl want a Freelander?
Sheesh. 🤨
Bad quality. Beautiful look
Not a bad looking car, but not very reliable, go Japanese or Korean instead.JLR customer service is bad also.
Look at this from the view of type of buyer the Evoque is made for... What Japanese or Korean SUV look like this?
Girly car
Cheaply made and highly priced
True and the original Evoque is one of the company's greatest sales success stories.
Peugeot euro 5
Jlr euro 6
It’s the most pointless car ever!
Nope. Not even close.

Disappointed in your clickbait title. Don’t do that
In what way? The title makes no sense in the first place let alone clickbait.
The Evoke looks to me to have its baseball cap on backwards, which sort of reinforces its chavvy image.
Vince C
The Evoque is not a Range Rover. Real Range Rovers have large V8 engines, are called Vogue and have a presence on the road that make other car drivers cower in their shadow. JLR called them Range Rovers to try to move it up market and sell more, all they did was water down the exclusivity of the Range Rover badge. They are Land Rover Evoques not Range Rovers.
Totally agree. Although I need to say, Vogue is just a trim, not a car
Is it a real Range Rover?
If you’re talking about reliability, then yes, it is.
They break just as much, and as often, as a full fat one.
Never seen a full size V8 real Range Rover with problems. If you’ve seen one, it’s probably just a pppr owner that can’t afford any basic maintenance.
I turned this video on to my grandmother and now she wants to be a blogger too. Looks like we're in the family business💞
