I actually liked Dukat's daughter's introduction here. Dukat is such a twisted character, and it was rarely clear where his warped sense of self wpuld drive him. His dispassionate side KNEW he had to kill his love child, but in the end he couldn't do it. Looking back, that is partially was sealed his eventual fate. She had such a dramatic effect on him. It's funny it happened here, in this middling episode. I hope that thought is coherent.
Kira and Dukat laughing during the "thorn in the butt" scene came about because Nana Visitor and Marc Alaimo found the situation endlessly hilarious. Their genuine laughter ended up in the final cut because they managed not to break character.
I love all Dukat-heavy episodes before his character assassination in the aftermath of "Waltz" (and even then, despite becoming "Space Satan", he is an amazing character to watch), but this is one of my favourites. Marc Alaimo is so incredibly charismatic ... he should be far more well-known as a character actor than he actually is. I enjoy Dukat's futile attempts to win over and even woo Kira, and I also love her stern refusal of his advances, never ever giving him anything - not even the least of compliments. It just works perfectly. I love their verbal sparring and also their mutual pragmatism whenever it is necessary. I would rate this a bit higher, but it speaks to the quality of DS9 that this episode is not too remarkable by Chuck's standards. To me, it is an especially entertaining and important Dukat-focused episode in season 4! 7/10, easily!
Between Dukat’s condescending “Major”, and Winn’s equally condescending “My child”, it really does seem like fate the two would have an unholy partnership in the finale arc.
Dukat, is perhaps one of the best written villians in the entirety of the Star Trek Franchise. A look at Dukat definitely needs multiple reviews to see the character in its entirety.
Similar to Dukat, Kai Win is a complex and layered and ultimately tragic figure. She suffered abuse as a vedek and fought back as she could but came to resent resistance fighters who had weapons to defend themselves with and who claim they alone liberated Bajor. Then after surviving the horrors of occupation and becoming Kai, she’s forced to share the glory with someone else, a non believer at that. I’d be interested to see you do a character study on these two someday.
and he most vocal and influential political opponent is a believer whose faith is stronger than hers...and whose faith is rewarded and affirmed by actual spiritual experience. The Founders never spoke to her and consigned her to hell, to her own hell. Not to say that Kira had it easier... but to a very real extent Kira was provided a clarity of purpose and when she followed through she was rewarded for it. Win pursued what she believed was her purpose and was punished for it by abandonment and then death as she was killed by what are either former Wormhole Aliens, evil gods, or Bajoran cave demons... partnered with her ex-lover, the ex-Gul Dukat.
Dukat was such a good villain because it's hard to tell how much of his own bullshit he believes at any given time and he's so much like an abusive partner
@@EnsignRicky011Hey, thats one Breen's fault, not the entire species. Can't blame them all for the one clear alien making strange movies with inferior alien technology. I however will blame the entire Cardassian race for sending a family of theirs to make a reality tv show about.
Kira would have known if her mother was on the ship. And Dukat couldn't have been Kira's father since Kira was already born when he courted her mother.
Sadly Dukat’s “The occupation ultimately made Bajor stronger” argument is one that gets echoed a lot in real life when people try to justify European and American colonialism.
*Looks at the rest of the world with eyes unblinded by moral relativism, and at what's happening in various countries.* You say that, but you ignore a lot to justify it.
Some people are also saying that about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, saying that the latter country is corrupt and broken and that Putin's just trying to install a stable government that benefits its citizens.
"I'm invading their country because I can see their government is corrupt and broken." "But *your* government is corrupt and broken!" "So I oughtta know."
People were making those arguments back then too particularly in regard to the British Empire. The Cardassians as a whole are a reference to imperialists with Dukat as their most vocal figurehead. Marc Alaimo just happens to be so charismatic that his performance actually had people siding with Dukat.. which also echoes real life.
Not to sound like a Bottom Feeder... but whenever Nana Visitor takes off a helmet, in Indiscretion and Dogs of War, she opens her mouth in such a way. (@#$@#!@!!!!!!!!)
My coming would have saved you. Set your people free in ways they cannot see. War would have tested them, broken the weak with its violence, yet allowing the strong to arise. Violence gave you that strength, awakened you - I can see it on your face, where two bullets left their mark. Were it a third party saying it it would be undeniably true. Without the cardassians the bajorans would be stuck with their djaras still with ships barely more advanced than sublight solar sailers. They wouldn't have colonies. And if they did no conquered would say they fought well, let alone genetically engineered super soldiers. This doesn't equate to giving the cardassians credit. But credit is not the same as recognizing reality.

Gul Dukat loves to hear himself talk
and so does the Audience
I wouldnt worry too much Cassidy, if that DS9 gig doesnt work out, I hear there's an opening for a Union doctor on the Orville.
I f'n love that show. Their third season is incredible, as good as any of the best found in Star Trek.
And she was nearly US First Lady, too.
As a bonus she gets a less robotic boyfriend.

The way Dukat says "major" sounds so condescending no matter how he says the word!
It's because we know that every time he does it, he's trying to flirt with her.

How the hell is there such a freaking mystery surrounding the Breen considering the ease in which their equipment is obtained?
I mean, the real mystery is why one of them travelled back to the early 21st century to make some of the worst, most pretentious ass movies ever made.

11:17 I always wandered how this happened. The first time I saw this I thought I missed part of the story.
I'd give this at least a 7: I love the Kira.Dukat double act.
My first time watching DS9, I thought Ziyal was going to turn out to be Kira's half sister, seeing how Dukat said he slept with her mom
