"i couldn't tell you what is damaging about growing flowers" funny enough if you grow only one kind of plants in the same place constantly the ground eventually gets dry out of the nutrients necessaries to grow plants the ground needs variety to not run out of them and that is kinda what happens to Isabella she needs variety because she is sick of only flowers

The fun part about Mirabel is that she is so skilled in various things, but because she doesn't have a gift all her talents are overlooked. @nataly-ct8gh 2 роки тому +16

yes, everyone around town seems to care so much for her, especially the kids, her family is so focused on helping around I think she really deals with the emotional side of helping, she's the one we see actually interact with people beyond them just asking for help or having a complaint of some sort. even if some interactions are kind of shitty, like the not-so-special special present that one guy got to make her feel special, it was a shitty attempt but they still tried to reach out knowing how hard it must be for her.

I took it as, just like the ship knew if it kept going the way it did it would break, Louisa knows that if she keeps going then she’ll eventually break too. Even though both the ship and Louisa know this, they keep going as people see them as unbreakable and they don’t want to disappoint them.

The dynamics of the Madrigal family really represents latino culture. The thing about latino families is we don't ever talk about the bad stuff. Latino households don't ever talk about failure and disappointment, in fact, gloating is a big part of our culture. Talk to any latino and they will say they've heard the phrase "your cousin is already in his second degree" or "your sister is getting married and you don't even have a relationship". There is no room for talking about sad things, about feeling pressure, about anxiety or anything remotely upsetting. It's bad but it really is part of the latino culture and that movie represents it perfectly... you know that they all love each other, you can clearly see that throughout the movie, but they just can't talk to each other, open their hearts to each other and really see each other. Very latino indeed.

He meant well, but I assume Pepa could have been a major bridezilla, meaning her emotions were rampant with nerves over the wedding that were worsened.

@@fishnewt1331 yes, I think Pepa is the only one Bruno actually wronged in any way, it was a pretty thoughtless comment. But I think that's what makes it so poignant, is that family drama can really be like that. Sometimes the most minute misunderstandings or transgressions can twist over time into rifts and broken communication and even complete estrangement. It's deep and it's shallow all at once. Just like Luisa sings, the pressure is like drips that all add up until you can't bear it any more.

I love how this movie digs so much deeper into each character’s personal problems. For Mirabel, we know she struggles with not having powers and not feeling like she belongs. But then we meet her “flawless” and “amazing” family, and we realize there’s more beneath all that. Luisa is under all this pressure, and it’s painful for Isabela to always be perfect. And you’re right about Dolores getting disturbed by some of the things she hears and Pepa definitely struggles with always having to control herself. One of my favorite interpretations of problems being caused by their powers comes from Camilo (the shape shifter), who is also my favorite character :). It’s not so obvious in the movie, but Camilo is said to not know who he truly is and not having that sense of self since he’s constantly changing between different people.

It shows her breaking down in a sort of prayer and the miracle forming before panning over to her staring off in a room (probably in shock). All of the gifted families members are expected to have their entire life and personality be ONLY their gift. Luisa can't make mistakes, rest, or be gentle because she's the strong unbreakable warrior. Isabella has to be perfect every second of every day with no mistakes, not a hair out of place or a decision made that doesn't reflect perfection, grace, beauty, and delicate femininity in every breath. Pepa can't be anything but sunny and cheerful so that no one is inconvenienced by her emotions. Julieta has to be nurturing and maternal at every moment and even going to bat for one of her kids is frowned upon because she's expected to be a mother to the entire valley and therefore can't "play favorites" with her own children. etc etc.
And then there's Mirabel who didn't GET a gift at age 5. What brought everyone here to begin with was a sudden tragedy that cost them nearly everything. Mirabel is scolded and belittled every time she isn't being invisible in the background because her very existence reminds everyone how fragile their happiness and safety truly is and that once again devastation could hit them with no warning. They've forgotten that the miracle was the continued survival of their family and the people they lead and protect. The magic gifts were only meant to be tools to facilitate that survival but they're instead treating the magic gifts like they are the end goal of the miracle and the people who have them are merely vessels for the magic.

Over time, I have learned that pain is inconsequential to strength. Or if there is a connection, there is 1000 things between pain and strength. If someone did not help you with all 1000 things and only contributed to the pain, then you owe them nothing. That person damaged you and did not help you recover. If you did become stronger from the experience, it is no thanks to that person.

I'm trying to figure out what Bruno's vision about Isabella in We Don't Talk About Bruno really meant and I am torn: Did he mean that the life she actually wanted would be hers and therefore she was hopeful or did he simply see her marrying Mr Mariano and thought that was what she wanted therefore just making she more anxious? I think both would be interesting but the second is more likely since his visions are visual and she didn't really know what she wanted of her life except to be freer.

I kind of like Camilo's verse and the fact that he was really young when Bruno left. Almost everyone in "We don't talk about Bruno" is an adult before he left, so they remember some personal experience with bruno. Camilo probably doesn't remember much about Bruno, just that his tio that seemed to make bad things happen. Because of this, his verse kind of seemed like he was telling a scary story. The seven feet tall thing is pretty accurate for a child’s estimate of an adults height (though when he turns into Bruno he isn’t much taller than mirabel) I also like the theory that Camilo accidentally saw Bruno in the kitchen or something when he was older and when Bruno called out his name in surprise , Camilo just passed out. “When he calls your name it all fades to black “ (not my theory though)

So many stories like this one of families and whole communities that had to run away from home trying to find shelter and in the process the are faced with brutality, death and loss, but still had to find strength to move on. It shows that it’s not always the oldest that has to be the strongest and carry the burdens and that was important to me because as the youngest, the stereotype is that I’m the perfect kid who can do no wrong (which I love that they have Isabella as that because once again, role reversal and showing not everyone is the stereotype), I’ve always had to be the strong one that has to just deal with everything and be fine with it. I could go on forever about this but I’ll just leave it at that. The change in stereotype roles is amazing.

I think that, regardless of actual birth order (although the oldest as third parents is very common and is absolutely a huge burden that should not be placed on a child) it's generally the 'reliable' people in the family who end up crushed like that. For me, I high key relate, my parents are/were disabled, my father died, so all four of us were forced to carry a lot more than we ever should've. There's definitely a lot of resentment towards the others who get to shirk their responsibilities, whether that's by leaving (my oldest siblings who are almost a decade older but also didn't have any of the support or hand-me-downs we got) versus the one/ones who are forced to stay because nobody else will. If you're around, and want to help, then you end up doing the lion's share of the work with no breathing room, especially when your parents have (purposefully or not) treated you badly. Everyone needs so much more support than they ever received, because there's only so many hours in a day. You either take care of the others or you take care of yourself and there's just not enough room to do both.

There was a post I saw on Tumblr that talked about side effects of their powers, including how the shape-shifting boy Camillo keeping a photo of himself in hand to reference when he has to transform back.

I haven't watched the movie but I really like surface pressure (the only one i heard) and i just noticed something about the titanic part, she said that the boat didn't move when they heard about the iceberg, i think it shows that people have so much "faith" in her or just know that she is there that they don't even try to avoid problems, they just think "oh luisa's gonna fix it, don't worry about the damage, you can go all out"

  • @Avocattle
    @Avocattle 2 роки тому +16

Honestly the best lyric in surface pressure is “give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would’ve pulled you under” cause when you give a problem to someone else to handle you just expect them to handle it no problem, but the reason you gave it to them was because you couldn’t handle it yourself, and it just really makes you think

Hope everyone else who relates got some reassurance from the song and overall message of the movie.

I also relate to Isabela because while I wasn't perfect because I was autistic and undiagnosed and the symptoms were there and so hard to deal with on my own I was masking to be as (convenient a kid) perfect as I could be. Which is why I also relate to Pepa because of years of micromanaging my moods down to my expressions and not being able to express myself and my emotions freely. Replace the clouds with autistic reactions and meltdowns and ya got it. I had my own What else can I do moment when I talked to an adult who handed me a crayon and told me to go nuts. Latinx is a recently coined word used to include all people within and outside of the gender binary in the Hispanic/Latin American community. So this person probably just used Latinx to make sure they included everyone, which you personally don’t necessarily need to do so when referring to women in the Latin American community if you don’t want to.

i’m glad you mentioned the whispering of the hearing gift ! there’s a theory that since their gifts are gifted as kids, they don’t know how to control it that much so she may have heard a lot of things she shouldn’t. and being a kid, a lot of things probably confused her so she asked or talked about what she heard that may not have been good so she was told to be quiet a lot. to “not talk about it” or be scolded by the adults around her so in turn she doesn’t have too many lines and is always whispering
