- You’ve heard us say many times that PHEVs- plug-in hybrid electrics- rather than BEVs- pure battery electrics- are a sound choice for many folks thinking about owning an electric vehicle. Well, buyers do seem to have gotten the message, as while recent sales of all-electric BEVs are down, PHEVs are suddenly skyrocketing. So, we thought we’d give you a close look at the range of PHEVs that are available today.

It's always good to see John Davis. I've been watching since 1985.
He has been the benchmark for all auto reviewers since the early eighties.
He belongs in the 80s…..his voiceovers are so annoying!!! I wonder who will takeover when he’s not around anymore.
Buy the Toyota PHEVs. Toyota knows what they are doing.
"So there you have it, the B's to V's of PHEV's"! Well put John Davis!
Really great segment. I had no idea there were so many PHEV options! Also good to hear ‘ol John Davis bustin some rhymes there at the end 😂
Protect this man at all cost!
It's great to see John, the creator the original of car reviews!
Very informative. Thank you. (MotorWeek was part of my pre-internet Saturday mornings in the 1980's on KPBS, San Diego, CA.)
Would like a to see the break even point over the plain hybrid and gas versions
One of MotorWeek's best videos! Extremely informative.
3:13 The Mazdas are the CX-70 and CX-90. Not the CX-30.
We may see a CX-30 PHEV in the future. But you're right that there isn't one now.
I own both a EV for just short commute around town and a PHEV for long distance. Both are Toyotas. I do prefer driving my EV as a daily driver, nothing like it vs engine providing power, just not as linear and instant torque without any drama.
Awesome list
Terrific!
We bought a "leftover" 2022 Jeep Summit 4xe in late 2023. With the tax credit and markdowns, it was less than a new conventional 2023 Jeep Grand Chrokee Limited and gets better mileage and way more HP when needed.
You’ll be regretting that. Soon.
@@FYMASMD I guess time will tell.
I like the way it looks but reliability has been a problem.
@@ejohnson3131 we have had a couple of recalls, but nothing major. We also have a 2014 "baby" Cherokee that has been great. Both are towable with our RV, which drove the decision (pun intended).
Makes perfect sense.
The only plug-in PHEV, I would purchase has to be available with either a $3750 or $7500 rebate off the purchase price. All others, I wouldn’t even consider.
Just like with the bev ones that don't apply, or if you personally don't due to income, all will have that money taken out when you lease. So, get what you want and lease it.
PHEV ROUND UP
i always want to see john davis healthy.🙏
Available my foot. Manufacturers have been asleep at the wheel with PHEVs, completely blind to market demand.
I'm in the market for one, and every dealership I've visited flat-out tells me they only get a few PHEVs in stock any given year, and are usually snapped up immediately with essentially a bidding war.
However these same dealerships generally have a notable amount of unsold BEVs... that market was massively overestimated and totally saturated now.
C'mon manufacturers, get your butts in gear and ramp up production of the PHEVs!
John Davis ❤
Video covering HEV & PHEV offerings would have been nice.
Buy the Toyota PHEVs. Toyota knows what they are doing.
4:37 the Pacifica PHEV starts at $50k. Only the regular non-hybrid model is at $40k
When did conventional wisdom in automotive manufacturing go from fewer parts is cheaper to as many as possible? It just seems like automakers are actually trying to make cars more complex.
Outlander all day everyday.
Tesla and other EV owners now can bring along the gas powered generators to qualify as Plug in Hybrid cars. LOL
Longest range is also the most reliable; Toyota Rav4 Primw
um that new mazda plug in should be CX-70, not CX-30. that's pretty much an error
just the tip.....
EV’s are a dead end. PHV’s are the future. Not starting vehicles
Not for me and many others. I realized I was lugging around a few hundred pounds of extra stuff for the gas engine that I used to go an extra 45 miles once or twice a month. Next car will be bev.
I'm sorry but he is right. EVs are simply a niche market. PHEVs will work better for mainstream buyers. Personally, I prefer standard hybrids. There is nothing to plug in. That works for me.
PHEVs remind me of those “fill the gap” motorized seatbelts from 35 years ago until airbags were common. ……I’ll stick to my 400+ mile range Lucid! 😀😎🥂
Toyota, Mazda, and Mitsubishi.
All of these PHEV vehicles would have been great 13 years ago, when the Chevrolet Volt was introduced. IMO, many of these PHEV's are too little, too late. The majority of the people buying these PHEV's could just buy a EV instead.
Why fool yourself-just get a Toyota plug in hybrid-any model or hybrid in general-Toyota is the king of this segment-always has been-I had a 2008 Prius with over
320000 miles on it-same battery pack-every other brand is total trash just in this video John just mentioned.
So last week "EVs sales are up, people says they are not, are missinformation"
Today "While EV sales are down, PHEVs are up"
Which is it mister propogandist?
……My upscale neighborhood in L.A. has over 40 EVs in it (yes, I’ve counted, I go walking every morning). …..that’s just my ONE neighborhood. 🤷🏼♂️😎👌
@@eddieg6436 Brag much.
@@cardinaloflannagancr8929 Not bragging, making an observation……it’s SoCal! EVs are every other car!!
@@eddieg6436it’s a fact ev sales are weak
@@FYMASMD ……Maybe in the Flyover states, NOT California. I remember when DVD players came out almost 40 years ago….the “regular, simple people” didn’t want to buy them either!!! 🤷🏼♂️🤔😎😂
Hyundai and kia are dead. Lots of problems
No
Good God……am I the only one really annoyed with Jonathan’s voiceovers? I used to like him but it’s just unbearable now. I might be in the minority 🤷🏻♂️
You are.
@@thomasofone welp…you’re the only one to say so.
Im not a fan of EV's, PHEV's, hybrid's. Too expensive, and when they become well used they will be a nightmare and expensive to keep on the road
Too dangerous. These batteries are rolling bombs. Takes too long to recharge for long distance travel. Don't touch the 240 volt power cord in the rain/snow or standing on the wet ground.
From a safety standpoint, EV’s are not the way to go. Having two choices of power is better than one. Hybrids are the way to go. Personally I would never buy an EV made by a petulant crybaby billionaire.
