I've been looking for the a better backpacking fishing setup for some time. I love the idea of a reel-less rod, one of these in a nine foot length (easier to cast in dense brush) sounds absolutely perfect. 3 ounces for a fishing rod is a dream come true. time to brush up on my fly fishing technique.
Love Tenkara fishing. Just finished an ice version. But, the most useful back pack/ hiking outfit I ever had was a 4/5 weight, 9.5' four piece St.Croix. Had a custom tip section made that made it a two piece 7' light action spinning rod fitted with a Pflueger ultralight reel commonly used on ice rods (small, incredibly durable, near perfect drag) spooled with 2lb dia./10lb test power pro. I literally caught everything from bluegill to strelhead, comfortably and confidentiality, with that rig.
I'm catching up on watching all your videos, so I can learn everything I can before I start asking questions. I hope you've learned how to tie a uni-knot since this video was made in 2016. Uni-knot is much better than a clinch knot.
Ya that definitely works especially with the furled line because it has no memory. But be warned if you do that with the crossbreed or level line you will just have to stretch the line really well before using it to get the kinks out.
You need to "improve" your clinch knots because they will pull out if not "improved". Go thru the top loop after going thru the bottom one. The bottom loop alone gives you the standard un-improved clinch knot and it will pull out!
Wow can it really be that simple? It looks like it is with Tenkara. What do you suggest as a first rod for a first-time fly fisher going to Sierras primarily? I have never fly fished but I am wanting to and love your products.
I would recommend the Teton Zoom for that area. At full length you can fish some of the bigger rivers but then you can adjust to a smaller length for more of the tighter streams. Let us know if that helps!
Lost a fish last summer as the ring came off my my line. Not your brand line, but i am not sure why it broke. Another summer is here, my second for Tenkara, so I am excited.
It definitely depends on where/how you are fishing and figuring out your preferences from there. But we do anywhere from 2-5 ft. I would start in that range and figure out what you like best.
On our furled and level lines it is all the same diameter. On the crossbreed line we use the pvc line and furled lines which are two different diameters. Since you aren't casting far the lines don't need to be tapered or weight forward.
Can I use regular fishing line with it. Not a fly fisher I hear wanting to get one for my dad since he pan fishes and hates the heavy bream poles since his shoulder surgery.
With fishing you can really try out whatever you think will work while still presenting your fly, lure, etc. to the fish in a good way. While that wouldn't be the best use for it anything is possible.
You could technically tie a line to the end of a traditional fly rod but you wouldn't get the same action. The main difference would be that traditional rods are built to load heavier line and cast for distance. Tenkara rods are made to handle a fixed length of very light line and give you a delicate presentation, which is what helps to make them so effective. But we aren't here to tell you what you can and can't do as long as you are having fun!
I just bought a bear tooth tenkara rod. After watching this video, I understand how to attach my fly line. However, I don't see the lead tip attached to the end of my rod. How can I attach my fly line to the rod tip? Or is there a way to extract the lead line from the tip of the rod without damaging it, providing there is a tippet lead line in my new tenkara rod.
Start by removing the bottom cap on your rod and pulling out the sections. You should have that lillian attached to your tip section so by pulling out the sections you should see it there. If for some reason there isn't one please send us an email at hello@tenkararodco.com and we can get that fixed for you!
I just received the Beartooth 10 ft rod. I expanded the rod, but retracting the rod, it’s stuck and will not retract fully. How do I retract the rod fully?
Its mainly just preference. If you are fishing dry flies then the crossbreed (floating) line would be the best option. But if you are fishing mainly under the surface the level line is a good choice. The furled line we make can do both pretty well.
Looked on your website linked in the description. This is something I want to get in to and I'm willing to support your company. Reading through the comments I saw a lot of 5 star reviews that said they had not received their packages yet, and much of the information about the different rods was very limited while sharing the same specifications with different price point. How am I to know that a rod that is priced at 185 is different than a rod with the same specs is different than a rod priced at 225? Would love to see more in depth specifications. Still willing to support your company, but was confused by your website and what to get.
Great questions Ryan! So basically the rods that are $225 are adjustable length rods. Meaning that they can be fished at two separate lengths. This requires a little more cost to build and that is why those rods are more expensive. We have a more in depth video about the rods on our rods page on the website. It explains the differences between each rod so that will help you decide. Let me know if this helps or if you need any other information. Thanks for watching the videos and supporting the brand!
With tenkara rods the lines are pretty lightweight because they don't need to cast very far. That being said, if you are looking for something a little heavier linewise check out our crossbreed line or a thicker level line. We also have a good video about choosing a line for your tenkara rod.
Dooser75 it’s ideal to keep the line either a few feet shorter or longer than the rod. So for a 13 ft. Rod it’s best to use either a 13ft or 10.5ft line. It’s all preference so test it out for yourself and see how you like it! Cheers!
great video, I'm still figuring out how to use my tenkara . how much colored line should I have on an 8 ft. or 12 ft rod in relation to my leader and such. any help would be great. I've noticed that my colored line sinks
Depends on water. I keep a rod length of level line and I add pieces as I need longer reach. Keep the level line out of the water when doing dry fly work. Done. For level line to tippet I create a loose figure 8 and tie a fisherman's to the loop on the fig 8 with the tippet just like you do to the fly end. Then tighten the 8. Holds great.. I use two knots ever.
Different animal TF. I too enjoy a good 4wt, my favorite weight in switch rod as well. Tenkara isolates the basics; casting, presentation and approach. The casting stroke is much lighter and more relaxed. Hope you give it a try.

@Daniel Ladbrook they recommend that you should do 5-6 turns, but try doing 7-8 turns. Also, after you put the line back into the loop at the top, HOLD ON TO THE TAG END after you put it in the loop and hold it until you have clinched the knot. Good luck!
@@coloradoflyguy5044 Thanks .... I have now sat for another hour and it keeps pulling out with a relatively light tug. I am going crazy. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I have also tried other knots found online (uni, one ..etc) everything pulls out or cuts it's self.

Best video yet on simple set up for Tenkara.

Thank you man ! Just bought one an hour ago. So stoked 🙏🏻
This video is perfect. Thanks. Best video for set up I've found.
Outstanding! I just got my first rod set up. Will definitely be checking out your store as I go along on this new thing. Thanks for the help.
Awesome! Thank you!

thanks for the tip on the line wrap.

I use Tenkara rods in Florida to catch Cichlid's an invasive fish that is taking over the canals and waterways.
That actually sounds really fun and helpful!
Great video on getting started. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Buenísimo lo vamos probar gracias por la información 👏👏👏
Thank you so much for this video. I got my first Tenkara Rod Co rod today and now know how to set it up

Very good product I really like it
He looks very happy
He fishes for a living so he better be!
I always go back through the loop on my fisherman's knots, if it works it works though!
Safer your way, I agree. We call it a tucked blood knot in the UK but a tucked synch knot sounds cool :)
That way is safer and more advanced we were just trying to keep it as simple as possible for people just learning.
@@tenkararodco I've honestly moved on to palomar knots lol but I feel it. Great video

how about one of your level lines?
Shadow fire 365 - Where is my Lilian? It’s in a separate tube. You guys don’t discuss that or did I miss it?

Can a rig a regular fishing rod to accept the Tenkara line? Take the reel off?
You could technically tie a line to the end of a traditional fly rod but you wouldn't get the same action. How do you decide how long your leader needs to be in comparison to the rod length, minus the tippet?
Hi Peter, here is a full article here about how to choose the right length of line for you: www.discovertenkara.com/blog/tenkara-level-line-length/
Do you remove the plastic from the cork handle?
Yes the plastic on there is just to protect the cork in transit. So ideally you remove it before fishing.
Thought so @@tenkararodco
How can the yellow line be retrieved when it pulls back into the rod?
Is there a reason for preference on sinking line vs floating line or is it just a choice?
Its mainly just preference. If you are fishing dry flies then the crossbreed (floating) line would be the best option. But if you are fishing mainly under the surface the level line is a good choice. The furled line we make can do both pretty well.

Yeah the smaller handle doesn't fit the same as the cork ones. A lot of people use the line clips for the beartooth and white cloud rods
