    Helpful information. But what if I'm in a band that has a genre (alternative/post punk) and we do covers and originals? A lot of this information isn't applicable.

    couple of tips right back atcha -
    don't sit down! this is rockanroll, not bach.
    throw away the music stand - you wouldn't go to a play with actors reading a script, learn the songs!

      I agree. I don't like to sit down but I do use an iPad. I agree with you as far as knowing a song by heart. It's good because it frees up energy for spontaneity in your performance which allows you to try things musically as well engaging the crowd more.

      I very rarely write out a set list. I prefer to read the room and react accordingly.

      Using an iPad, my repertoire is exponentially expanded. It’s a trade off I’m happy to make - especially since I work 60+ hours per week and don’t have all day to memorize every song. I have a great voice and can play songs fluently with the help of an iPad, so that’s what works for me.
