Don't think I could agree more with everything Joe has said. Beautiful video and perfect explanation. I would only add something else. Just stream. Stream more. Stream lots. People spend hours 'thinking about streaming' or 'setting up a stream'. Just stream, don't overthink it.
Genuinely really good insight into not only stream design and layout, but also just some general overall tips for streaming that everyone should see. 0/10 I expected Joe to be in a hot tub for this entire video.
Always insanely impressed with the ridiculous level of quality you put into your videos, the amount of coverage, the lighting, the cool effects, it's amazing. The purple forrest looked fantastic! Keep up the great work Joe!
With audio I would like to mention that depending on the style of your stream equalisation is key. So like with a quiet, soft spoken stream where your playing animal crossing. Enhance the low frequencies and remove noise (remove the low frequencies bellow 100hz (ol' studio tick as most people can't hear them and they may get in the way of the mix and make it feel dirty and the human voice sticks around 1-7khz any way) and enhance the vocal frequency range). I've seen way too many people do this wrong and either make their mix sound tinny like a Heinz baked beans can or do too little and then you have a mix that just sounds to raw and unatural for human listening. And some people have a unwanted natural resoances in their room. So just use a notch filter. But with the music tech out of the way, great video Joey BOI.
I think the thing about channel design is the overall aesthetic is greater than the sum of its parts, yes while having the banner blend into the twitch colour may not be the most important element of a streamers brand, when every element on that page has that same level of attention to detail it does give the impression of a certain level of professionalism, and that the streamer takes it seriously, which I think overall benefits the persuit of getting return viewers
Here's the comment that you asked for Joe. Love every vid. Even though I don't stream or have any intent to, it's still very interesting for me to learn about the back end of this sort of thing. Also, the purple forest looked great!
Great advice Joe, especially the sound section. So since you're working on the Yog's, and have proper advice on sound, my question is simple, "Will you fix Simon?" Thanks Joe, love the content.
There is no one thing that make you a big youtuber or streamer, but it all helps. the bit about being entertaining is so true, you can put lot of money in to a set up, but if it boring then it dont matter how much you spend its going fall short. Think about why you follow who you do, normly it's because there entertaining.
Here's a comment for you, since you asked for it. Also wanted to tell you your quality and the quality the people you work for is amazing, keep up the good content!
i have 0 interest in streaming but watched the entire thing because the color grading looked so amazing!🤩 i mean i guess i learnt some stuff i can use but thats besides the point... 🙄 love ur vids Joe! 😙
"You weren't expecting this plot twist, were you? The guy that gets paid to make streams look good is saying it doesn't even matter," An artist undervaluing the significance/worth of their work is too cliche to be a plot twist lol. It may not be the most important part of a stream but I really think you're doing yourself a disservice to say it doesn't matter.
This is a great video with a lot of interesting and useful information! At times I did feel that it was a little bit too dragged out with editing and scene changes - you are a very talented video editor, but it sometimes distracted a bit from the points you were making, which I thought was a shame because there's a lot of great knowledge here. Thank you for making it though, it's an insightful look at stream design from someone who has experience in doing it for others, and I don't often see people making youtube videos about this.
Quick question - how’d you sit outside with all those flies and nor even flinch while talking Really like the insight and tips - it’s a super informative video Also love the orange set up now - really subtle and nice to look at Side note - had a brief moment of concern when Mort was at the window and jumped out and there was no reaction 😂 I thought it was a height and was very concerned
I don't stream but I love watching Joe's content, 1) it's always so pretty and 2) Joe is so pretty But no I really enjoy getting some insight from Joe and hearing his perspective :)
I think stream assets matter more than people realize, it's just more on an unconscious level. Of course people won't go: "Wow! This overlay is so dope let me just watch this graphic!!" But I do think people tune into a stream and either go "ugh" or "hmmmm". Like the banner not matching up with the colored bar on the side - I think quite a few people will notice it but only a few will think "wow another example of poor design", maybe another few will go "lol" and keep scrolling [or whatever], and most will go "hmm" and focus on what they came for on the page. Maybe some people like a certain streamer's personality, but their overlay is flashing and obnoxious so they tune in for 5 minutes and leave. Maybe they don't even realize it's because of that, they just sort of go "whatever" and turn it off. Maybe with someone they don't know they click on the stream and there is so much interesting design on stream that they stay for a few minutes to have a proper look, in which the streamer says or does something funny that makes the viewer stay even longer, not even aware of the reason. I think for streamers it's not something to focus on; it's definitely more of a plus. When you're just starting out it's better to focus on consistent streaming, being heard properly and making sure your stream doesn't stutter or completely die _lol._ I do think that while you're making a fanbase, the assets will quickly tell newcomers about your personality and style and either draw them in or scare them off. Anyway long comment _whoops_ have a nice day or something.
‘Investing dumb money…’ It’s like any business, it doesn’t hurt to cut corners where you can. As long as you understand WHY the corners can be cut and HOW to do it, it’s a fabulous idea.
Purple forest makes it look so pretty. What desk chair do you use out of interest? I had to ask as I'm on the hunt again heh, sorry for another gear question!
Idk... i don’t think cameras matter. The Yogscast blew up during the time they didn’t show there faces so i don’t think a camera is important. It’s more the personality.

People spend hours 'thinking about streaming' or 'setting up a stream'. Just stream, don't overthink it.
welcome to another episode of:
“joe makes some of the best content on youtube and doesn’t get anywhere near the recognition he deserves”
Genuinely really good insight into not only stream design and layout, but also just some general overall tips for streaming that everyone should see.
0/10 I expected Joe to be in a hot tub for this entire video.
That purple colour grading looks so so cool :)
re recognisable icons: i always know when ravs is live bcos of that gorgeous bright yellow. gud job
I disagree with the ending :P I literally don't intend on streaming or making stream assets but I watched this entire video, because it LOOKED good!
Making that forest purple looks tedious, but absolutely worth it!
I think it’s just using hue/saturation and slide the greens over to purple. There might be some clean up to make it look good idk
Always insanely impressed with the ridiculous level of quality you put into your videos, the amount of coverage, the lighting, the cool effects, it's amazing. The purple forrest looked fantastic! Keep up the great work Joe!
What a twist ending!
I actually bought/downloaded your LUTs a few weeks ago and I've really loved them! These tips are all fantastic as well, tysm for sharing your wisdom.

Just restarted streaming recently and I'll definitely adjust a few bits. Thanks for the ideas Joe
Yet again we are gifted with the glorious works of Joe Hickson
Great advice Joe, especially the sound section. So since you're working on the Yog's, and have proper advice on sound, my question is simple, "Will you fix Simon?" Thanks Joe, love the content.
I love Bouphe's triangular face-cam frame.
This was a very insightful video and I'll definitely be going away and changing some things about my stream! Thank you!
We need to see more Joe hanging out in a purple forest tbh

The way I see it is that assets/ overlays should enhance the stream but not be the focus of said stream
Here's a comment for you, since you asked for it.
Also wanted to tell you your quality and the quality the people you work for is amazing, keep up the good content!
Love this video! thanks for all of the insight

Purple forest makes it look so pretty.
What desk chair do you use out of interest? I had to ask as I'm on the hunt again heh, sorry for another gear question!
its an ergohuman something something, this a few brands make the exact same chair tbh :)
That coffee pouring was disconcerting
5:00 Wee break
that intro was sexy

Idk... i don’t think cameras matter. The Yogscast blew up during the time they didn’t show there faces so i don’t think a camera is important. It’s more the personality.
Joe please stop putting extremely perfectly recorded coffee pouring sounds into your vids, your vids make me pee uwu 😆
Am I here for the tips? Nah, I just wanna see how he plugs the damn website for the damn mug. Don't need it, but I'll at least get a shirt.
