I appreciate you filling us in on what we can expect when we go to Cuba. I wish the best for you and your family. Thank you for making these videos.

We were also not permitted to local Black Cubans into our Air B&Bs and that should be in your video too. They were not permitted to enter our dormitory no matter how much we paid to be there

Thank you for the informative video, Jose. I understand some of the reasoning behind the rules about drones, public schooling, and beef. I wish more people here in the US could recognize the value in implementing regulations like those. We need a balance.
We get constant recalls on food products here because many factory and agricultural workers are pushed to the brink with unimaginable quotas, they have no choice but to skip over food safety protocols. A child was killed in a poultry processing plant machinery incident recently. He was too young to be working there legally but soon that won’t make a difference because our child labor laws are changing for the worse very quickly. It is like how Upton Sinclair described the Industrial Revolution. The drinking water in south Florida even became contaminated with E. coli /fecal matter last summer. The public was not alerted properly and there is still question about if all the problems have been resolved or if something else is being covered up. We have to pay for our water and we cannot even trust that it is safe to use/consume. This happened in riviera beach county, where a large percentage of the community is Black and/or Latino. The situation reminded me of what is still going on in Flint, Michigan with the lead poisoning disaster. The Florida government promised updated water processing plant repairs years ago but didn’t follow through. The pipes here are especially vulnerable to ground mineral deposit contamination and leaks because of Florida’s ecology but the water systems are not properly maintained in the heat crisis.
Public schools hardly get funding in many states but it is especially bad in Florida. Teachers are placed under heavy scrutiny for showing or teaching even the slightest compassion. They face physical violence from both parents and students daily. Teacher unions are about to disappear completely so if they want to have a job they must comply. Books are policed in public schools. If a parent decides a certain book is out of line with their personal preferences they can challenge the title and the school board can pull it from the school bookshelves. School administrators are afraid of being sued by parents or losing more funding from the state government for having forbidden literature available where the kids can read it, so they often side with the parents - even if the request is ridiculous. They have challenged books like the Diary of Anne Frank claiming the content is not suitable for children. Many schools and teachers have emptied their shelves as an act of proactive self censorship because the new laws are deliberately vague about what is permissible. Teachers are afraid of being penalized with job loss or harsh fines. They cannot afford to risk having any innocent children’s books that might potentially be classified as “leftist propaganda” by one of the qanon conspiracy theory parents. The curriculum in Florida is evolving to teach students that slavery is good.
Students with disabilities and special learning needs do not get proper accommodations. Communities with higher minority populations often have awfully outdated public school buildings. Lower income students have no option but to try to learn in unsafe conditions with very limited transportation /nutritious meal options. Many have to drop out before their high school graduation to work to help provide for their families. They are deliberately left behind to fail in society and stay stuck at the bottom. When I worked as a teacher, young children in my classes were so hungry during the schooldays that it caused behavioral issues and classroom disruptions. They did not have access to adequate medical care so they would develop frequent illnesses and dental problems that kept them away from class time. When kids are more worried about food and survival it is impossible for them to learn anything in class. Wealthy families can afford to move to areas with nicer public schools or they send their children to private schools that offer many amenities and opportunities for advancement in high paying career industries. A society that does not care about their children does not care about the future for anyone.
Of course Cuba is not a utopia, no place is because all countries have problems. I personally feel many of the rules set in place there only have to exist because the USA has been aggressively trying to sabotage the concept of community and caring for other people for centuries. And, so many of the talking points Americans like to use to criticize the Cuban government could easily be flipped around and used as talking points to criticize the USA government. So many of those “human liberty violations” actually happen so often in the USA they have become normalized here. Each day more people here become disillusioned and finally realize that the USA operates as nothing more than a business scheme. We do not have enough doctors, teachers, artists, public health officials, farmers, construction professionals, morally conscious scientists or historians here in the USA. It is becoming increasingly difficult to be seen by a competent physician in a timely manner when health issues arise. But we have an excess of businessmen, lawyers, computer programmers, chemical engineers, and soldiers. People are shamed if they choose to study anything else in college. We are not allowed to feel emotion or show passion about anything, if we do then we face the threat of being diagnosed with a myriad of mental illness disorders and subsequently be placed on expensive prescription pill regiments that cause more health and emotional distress. We might even be institutionalized or prescribed shock therapy treatments if we speak out of turn or refuse to take the pills. There is no community support to prevent people from becoming burnt out, isolated and depressed in this industrial labyrinth. Everyone is sick from working so much, and no one can be proud of the hard work they do because we can never sit back and relax or reflect on our lives. How can we be proud of working 60 hours a week if that work wasn’t actually productive and it didn’t help improve anything? We are told if we feel unhappy in life it must be because we are not working enough. even those who can afford healthy groceries cannot find time or energy to prepare balanced meals or exercise to stay fit and happy. We don’t have time to spend making quality memories with our families or friends anymore. Sometimes it feels like we are living in 1984. We have so much stuff here in the USA but it is all wasted on war and destruction. We are addicted to novelty and overconsumption and so many people are stuck in incredible debt.
Traveling is scary. There are ICE checkpoints some people in Texas and other states must stop at daily now, even if they do not leave the country or live near the border. They must cooperate with questioning and present their ID just to use a regular public access road. These checkpoints are not at all constitutional. We have a right to plea the fifth and we should be protected from unreasonable searches and seizures but state governments do what they want to racially and ethnically profile whoever they want. They are incentivized by privately owned prisons to arrest as many people as possible so they can have more free labor aka legal slavery at their disposal.
Driving has become much more dangerous than it was a few years ago due to neglected infrastructure and impatient drivers. Construction projects involve a lot of planned obsolescence so things fall apart quickly. Roads and highways here are not built for safety or efficiency. There is a lot of pollution because we do not have common sense mass transit options; people spend hours a day commuting to work sitting in traffic. Since 2020, a significant amount of people have flocked to metropolitan cities for employment and refuge from the political extremists who reside in the rural areas. In many rural areas known as sundown towns Black people and lgbtq people cannot safely exist without being arrested for no reason, threatened with arms, or even lynched/disappeared. People have become very paranoid of each other all across the country. It is so polarized and divided. Communities are being ripped apart by hate and prejudice.
There are cameras and drones everywhere recording everything we do in public. Some privately owned, some owned by the state. But the private corporations sell our data to the state affiliated oligarchs anyway.
What I think we all need to do (especially Latinos) is make an effort to keep communicating more openly with each other about our experiences. Through patience and empathy we will be able to see what does and doesn’t work, without such strict labels keeping us from having important conversations. We need to recognize that corruption and greed exist everywhere and we have to identify what we are willing to compromise on. Societies cannot thrive when there are too many rules and societies cannot thrive when there aren’t any rules. Success is dependent on the integrity of the people. Let’s commit to never losing our cultural ties/ solidarity with people around the world. Latinos are especially gifted when it comes to welcoming new people and bringing people from different backgrounds together in harmony.
Blessings & love to you and Cuba today, the anniversary of José Martí’s death 🇨🇺♥️

@@josesvlog America is why, we have cut you off from most of the world, and if you enter the ocean without permission, the coast guard may intercept you. I've studied Cuban US relations a long time, Your revolution was not long ago and you had a big bully pushing you down as you tried to stand up, America overstepped. The fact that Cuba is still standing is only a story of how strong you guys are.

What about kitchen tools? I know knives are forbidden but what about scissors? Asking because I bought some on sale, still in the packages, which I would be happy to gift to the kitchen staff behind the scenes next time I can go (I am saving up)

That's weird that you can't even sail around your own country... like if you live on one side of Cuba and you visit another city or area in another part of Cuba and you can't even be a tourist in your own country's waters. How about in a lake which is for the most part more enclosed and inland? As for beef, that is so weird but I understand. You need them for farming and milk. Now I'm scared to bring canned beef into Cuba. I'll be visiting in less than 2 weeks and I know there is a food shortage so I bought a couple of cans of chicken and pork. Now, I don't want to buy any corned beef for fear I'll get arrested or be kicked out.
