Vivaro valve cover gasket replacement & messing it up!

  • When we changed Vinnies clutch and gearbox we notice oil all down the back of the engine. Most of it seemed to be coming from the valve cover gasket. The breather/filler was also covered in oil so we had a look at that too.
We decided to replace it and here's how we did it. It didn't all go to plan by the way.

I have to warn you that I have no formal automotive training, and have just learned by breaking stuff. If you can learn anything from my mistakes then great, but you do so at your own risk!

Thanks, I think it's a common issue that the keys don't match, because the ignition locks fail quite often.
      Cheers Larcs 👍

The breather pipe wore through on mine, had a hole in it and a lot of oil down the back

Do you know when you should and shouldn't use sealant with gaskets? I've got this van and not sure whether to use sealant AS WELL AS the rubber gasket when refitting the sump. Also not sure whether you use sealant when replacing the turbo and metal gaskets. I assume you wouldn't use it with the metal gasket on the EGR valve for example

Rubber gaskets shouldn't need sealant although sometimes it's advisable to put a little bit in tight corners and one the casing joins. The metal gaskets shouldn't need anything either but I have been known to put a smidge of exhaust paste on in the difficult areas just in case.

Sorry for the late reply, UA-cam is doing weird things with comments on the channel?

Personally I never use a ratchet to start tightening or undoing nuts and bolts where I can for thus very reason. You got no feedback with a ratchet

feedback? what is that on bolts and nuts? i've been repairing Jags for over 40 years, mostly with ratchets ONLY, manual, air and electric, never thought of that..
