The reason for blackouts isn’t to encourage people to attend the games at the stadium. The reason is because the local broadcasters pay the nfl teams big money for the rights to be the EXCLUSIVE broadcaster for the local area. Which means if you’re trying to stream through another service and not through that specific local broadcaster (usually a cable tv channel) it’s blacked out on that other service. To keep the local broadcasters exclusivity they paid for. The teams don’t want people paying for streaming subscriptions, because they don’t get as much money from that. They want you paying for overpriced ripoff cable and watching via your local channel. The teams make much more money that way. In fact the bulk of their revenue comes from network tv deals, not stadium tickets and concessions.

If we also look at large gaming companies like tencent we start to a bigger picture.
