Priya Hariharan
Kalaimamani Padma Shankar is professional violinist, vocalist and educator of international acclaim, who has had the privilege of being a disciple of Padmabhushan Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman. Her performances are noteworthy for their technical excellence and virtuosity as well as the soulful nature of her music. She is also known for her collaborations with musicians of varied stripes ranging from classical to contemporary. She has performed in concerts and music festivals all over the world, including the first ever Carnatic Classical Symphony in Singapore. She is a grade-A artiste of the All India Radio, and is currently an advisor in the Shankar Mahadevan Academy. She has a Masters' degree in Music from University of Madras.
Her sister Priya Hariharan was also a disciple of Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman, beginning in the early 1990s. She is an AIR artiste for vocal music as well as the violin, and has accompanied many famous vocalists in concerts in India as well as the US. She is the founder and director of the Bhairavi School of Music in Colorado. She is also active in cultural outreach and broadening Carnatic music awareness in the Denver area, through many lecture demonstrations at universities. She has also collaborated with musicians of other genres, and was notably invited to perform with the grammy-nominated band "The Devotchkas".
Both of them have fond memories of their guru's many different sides. For instance, Padma vividly remembers the joyful manner in which he would relish a play on words, or numbers, or sometimes both. An example she recalls is a puzzle where a train's stopping time at a station (01:58 to 02:02), which one has to guess, is verbally described as "two to two to two two". While a simple one compared to the puzzles he would pose to his students, it is illustrative of his eagerness to delight in the many small joys and curiosities of life. To the memory of the great maestro's musical teachings as well as his lighter side, they offer this video tribute.
