Love your video. I rode this train in October’23. My Manor car (Abbott) is captured here and I saw my window (compartment F). Great memories! Many thanks!
Beautiful scenes of a most impressive train. I much prefer this loco color scheme to the old one, though it doesn't quite fit with the blue on the cars. Thanks for sharing, sir!
Very good work, you put alot of thought into getting the train filmed at all those great locations & you must have put quite a few km's on your car too. -this is so good I would like to have a DVD of it & the other clips. Thanks for posting!!!
I like the second shot by the Heffly Creek Scrapyard I always go to the crossing by the restricted signals just north of the Tolko mill on that curve and its a great shot! same as this one
really nice video you really put some effort in here . i chased a freight from edson to the park once but soon lost him. mosquito count was really high as well .wet june . got some other trains on the way down to Kamloops but the bugs were fierce .really discouraged hanging around taking picture which was a shame as the whole area is really photogenic.... do you have any other videos?
Thank you for this excellent video - and a further thank you for letting us hear the natural sounds and sparing us the usual mindless pop music that most fans put on their video.
You're welcome! :) Since I dislike most of the music one gets subjected to i.e. there is no relation to the theme of the videos, I decided to skip it and leave the sound as it is at the time of capture.
a lot of the landscape reminds of the Texas Eagle. the long distance Amtrak train that serves my city of St. Louis, and also runs through some areas similar to the ones shown here. I hope you chase it again toward other spots in the future!
Nice video.. Live in Calgary, where The Canadian went through daily before 1990. Saw the last run through there. Trying to figure out if the green car in the middle which seems to belong to the Whistler Mountaineer, is spliced in the consist. And by the way, I am aware of the distances and how much effort you put in trying to pace the train. Nice fast editing also. Thanks. and
Actually I have another video that shows a freight being passed by VIA #2 ua-cam.com/video/H9_HDNnVtpk/v-deo.html . The Canoe River Bridge is just a few miles/kilometers south of Valemount/BC. Regarding the extra tan that day; my friends from Germany started to wonder what we were waiting for while we were eating our sandwiches. That day they learned that rail-fanning in Canada takes p-a-t-i-e-n-c-e. ;)

Ride it all the way and take sleeper, plus eat in the diner. That's the only way to travel in style. During the day, you can stay in the Park car and enjoy the scenery.
Excellent job....many thanks indeed! I'm left wondering how many miles and how long you were chasing the train for? I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation and hope to see many more. Best wishes from Bournemouth, Dorset on the south coast of England. Rob.
Thanks Rob! Distance on the road is 440km (274miles), add to that the 119 km (74 miles) from home to Kamloops. Makes for a long day since the Canadian leaves at 06:35 ( if they're on time) gets to Jasper at 16:00, but since that's in the Mountain Time zone it would be 15:00 Kamloops time. Research for most trips happens using Google Earth and/ or remembering to check out a new spot from previous shoots. Lots of fun! Glad you enjoyed it, too. HJ
Thanks for the reply HJ! Looking on Google Earth had worked out your possible mileage as bring even more...but of course I didn't realise you had a 74 mile journey before the chase started! Your efforts are much appreciated and I look forward to seeing more. Best wishes from a very wet and miserable Bournemouth (very heavy rain and gale force winds) on the south coast of England. Rob.
It was all shot on the same day. It's shoot, drive, shoot, drive and so on; but I do all the research for the locations before the shoot using Google Earth and other maps. And as time goes on I get to know more and more of the "good" spots.
izalixe There's another "little item" to the shoot routine. VIA #2 is scheduled to arrive at Kamloops at 06:00 and leaves at 06:35. Since it is more than 100kms from our place to Kamloops I try to get out of the house by no later than 04:15. Not too bad in the summer but a different story in the dark of winter .... and the one time in winter the train arrived before 06:00. So I asked the train crews "What's wrong with this picture, how come you're early?" They got some lucky breaks between Vancouver and Kamloops. That doesn't normally happen.
+Ian Appling The Canadian is extremely popular with tourists from far and wide. Depending on the segment(s) one would like to travel the selection of available seats can be challenging. Good for VIA.
canadiancatgreen No, there was nothing secret about it, but I picked the locations that are usually missed by people. ;) Being prepared for the action is part of the fun when chasing trains.
WOW!!! I was just on that train, Québec-Vancouver & back....... very nice video, it's great to see it from the outside, a perspective you cant have while on board! Check out my videos for a visit in the engine & some clips inside the train !!!

What a great shots of Via Number 2 It is the shots you cannot get riding onboard
Thank You Jim
Thank you. Loved this.
Great views. How patient to hike mountain areas and find the train.
Very nice work. I love the exterior shots with a moving train; that's a view you don't getI on board.

Terrific video as always
Excellent videos :)
What a lovely train! Too bad it does not run daily, or maybe alternate between this and the CP Route on an every other day basis??
Very well done thanks.. UK

Thanks everyone, much appreciated!
I'm confused, a freight train took the siding for the VIA? That NEVER happens around here! Great video!
it might have been at a point where the tracks merge into one in which case the freight had no choice.

I'm traveling on that train in July, any advice to enjoy the most of that train?

Did you actually run after the train with your car or what this shot on several days ? Quite amazing because this train is not always on time.....

+TheOldRailfan I filmed Via number 1 at around 1pm july 31st in kamloops so I agree with you there pretty late sometimes lol
My only question is there a necessity to have a 21-car long passenger train and do they actually fill the seats?
+Ian Appling The Canadian is extremely popular with tourists from far and wide. Depending on the segment(s) one would like to travel the selection of available seats can be challenging. Good for VIA.
Why must they put that out of place car in a uniform train set?
cool video were you secretly following the train?

A far better train than the overrated "Indian Pacific" in Australia.
