We’re a passionate city and sometimes we get caught up in our pride. I wasn’t around to see the old jets play, but I think people have a very personal attachment to the fact that we’re a hockey city.
I was a Thrashers season ticket holder and I support the jets now. I completely understand why they were relocated, why Atlanta will never get another team and why the Jets organization and most of its fans ignore that the team ever existed. However, I was there, I was at those games, in Philips Arena, wore my Ilya Kovalchuk jersey with pride(i still do), still have my Dan Snyder tribute "DS 37" pin and I formed my love for hockey during those years as a kid going to Thrashers games. I just always find myself pondering over the "What if..." scenarios surrounding the franchise. What if the Thrashers were owned by Arthur Blank instead of Time-Warner/Turner(please look at Atlanta United in MLS as for reasons why Arthur Blank is an awesome owner for a new sport in Atlanta)? What if the Owners weren't crap? What if the NHL never went on strike in 04-05 (Atlanta was set to host the All Star game that season and the game never got its chance to plea its case of Hockey to the city of Atlanta during that All Star weekend? Lastly, What if the the Thrashers never drafted PATRICK FREAKING STEFAN as 1st overall in 1999? I still get emotional about the team but I have moved on and I watch every game just as every Jets fan does in Manitoba. So I just ask to the people that hate on the Thrashers and Atlanta, please remember there are tons of people just like me here in ATL that are passionate about Hockey and the NHL. For the record, watching every night, the way the fans in Winnipeg support that team, that city 100% deserves the Jets, so passionate about the sport, they probably deserve it more than Atlanta does, even if Atlanta is an awesome market for the NHL, Atlanta will survive because of the other teams in the State/City but I feel like Winnipeg NEEDED the JETS. With Love, thank you for standing up for the Thrashers fans in Atlanta and keep doing your thing Hockey Guy, this channel is incredible
I mean, who would they have drafted beside stefan? The twins were set for Vancouver and the others were probably even worse than Patrik. The draft class was horrible beside the Sedins, period. Had the thrashers drafted just a year earlier they would have created a great team, ah well...
I kinda miss the Thrashers tbh. I was still relatively young when they moved, but there's a nostalgia to seeing the logo and remembering the late 2000s-mid 2010s lol
The problem with embracing the Thrashers history is that Winnipeg already has an NHL history, and this guy wants us to move on from our pride in Selanne, Hawerchuk, Hull, Nilsson, etc... and let Arizona have it. It's like if Edmonton lost their team for some reason and got one back, but asked them to move on from Gretzky. They have a right to that passion.
I have always been a Pens fan, but I had also loved the Thrashers during their existence. I love this video, and thank you for standing up for all of us Thrashers fans!
nobody is saying that if you were a fan of the thrashers to disregard that love. What THG has said in previous videos is that Winnipeg is not allowed to celebrate the original Jets because they're now Arizona, and the franchise record moves on with the team, despite the fact that when Arizona came into play, it was new management/coaching, and most of the players that were celebrated in Jets history weren't even associated with Arizona even briefly. Let Winnipeg have it's history as the city (because that's who deserves to have the say in what they celebrate or embrace). If Atlanta were to get a new team, I'd say let the CITY have it's history. Fuck THG.
Conor Power I'm a pens fan... Coincidentally the yotes, canes, and panthers are my three other favorite teams... But yeah I bought a (fake obviously I'm not rich) danny heatley light blue one, it's a little small but I love it and it looks good hanging on my dorm wall
As a jets fan the only problem is that we don't get to celebrate the old team. For example when laine broke the jets "record" for rookie goals passing Kovalchuk its just doesn't feel right knowing teemu should be apart of jets records not Arizona
I recall the announcers at the time said franchise record they then said how he stood in Jets history which are 2 different things. It was only the next day I heard media heads flip out about this "afront" the franchise history which is wrong because that particular franchise started in 99'
Hockey guy...Jets fans are passionate. When you use a Thrashers magnet, its like having a new wife hanging a picture of their ex-husband proudly on the wall in the living room or bedroom years after fact. New husband wouldn't like that (understandably). Obviously, new husband doesn't ignore her past either and the ex is bound to mentioned in conversation here or there and that ok.. Now if you want to pay homage to the Thrashers go ahead. It's your channel, your are free to feel and do as you wish. But I am surprised that your surprised on the reaction of Jets fans. Answer me this: If the Oilers moved..lets say to Houston and later Edmonton got another team, lets say the Coyotes .Don't you think Oilers fans would be miffed if you put a Jets 1.0 or Coyotes logo on the board when you list the "new" Oilers team a Cup contender? Yes I admit the Jets teams of the 80s were not too good. But good or bad, they played in this city and have an emotional connection to Winnipeg. The Thrashers do not. So to be clear, even though you hanging a thrasher magnet mildly irked me, I will still kept watching because I like your channel and you have the freedom to pay tribute or do anything you want. Just surprised you made this video.
I'm a canes fan and for those that are maybe too young to remember and don't know, the Carolina Hurricanes were transplanted from Conneticutt, and are the former hartford whalers. Carolina came down from hartford and were just awful. They were so bad. They had traded away Ron Francis and got nothing back. When they came to carolina they absolutely sucked. They were the definition of a dumpster fire. A few years of good drafting later and in 2006, Rod Brind'amour had the cup above his head. Just because your team came from somewhere that isn't a traditiona hockey market and was in complete shambes doesn't mean that they are going to be bad forever. Sure it helps if you win a playoff game, and the canes have won more playoff series then the Jets have played in playoff games, but this team is special. TO jets fans, Laine, Schifele, Wheeler, Ehlers Stastney are scary. Hellebuyck is having a Vezina level year. You likely win your first playoff game and playoff series this year. I really think, from a fan of a former rival, this team is going to go far. I understand you don't want the history of Ilya Kovalchuk and /Marian Hossa but it's the team you have. Be happy you have it, because there are fans all over North America and abroad that would love to be in your situation. Just look at Quebec.
Look at the 1997 Carolina roster. They were AWFUL. Only Wesley was worth mentioning and if you’re young you don’t know who that is. It’s been long enough since the jets moved. Get over where the team came from and get on supporting them to a cup.
I'm a Devils fan, but I own and wear my Rockies and Scouts jerseys often. That is part of our history, so I embrace it proudly. I have the blue Scouts jersey, and it is ugly, but I love it. Whenever I wear that jersey, I inevitably have at least one or two people stop me to comment on it. Many old time hockey fans are happy to see the jersey and we talk hockey. Many people who have never seen it ask me what team the jersey is for as its very unique and uncommon in both its design and logo. By wearing those jerseys, I am keeping history alive. One of the things that makes the NHL so special is it's rich and storied history. I also have a blue Peter Stastny Nordiques jersey, and will someday get a Whalers jersey. I love those old teams and their logos. People need to start embracing history instead of ignoring it never happened. We'd all be better off as a result.
Again Because Jersey has no historical Jersey of their own, be KC and Rocky proud. Winnipeg has a proud hockey history, don't ask us to embrace a lame one.
Derek Richards Whether you choose to embrace the past or not is up to you. Simply ignoring it doesn't make it go away. When a team is relocated, its past follows it. Thats how it's been done in the NHL, and that's how it will continue to be done. No one is not telling you to embrace the history of the old Jets. Celebrate what you had, but that is gone now. Its time for you to forge a new history with the new Jets. You should be happy you got a team back, along with the name. That rarely ever happens. Focus on that positive instead of what you don't have.
In Canada we still embrace the Monarchy of England, In the US they do not. I wouldn't even think to ask an American to embrace the English Monarchy or their history, Why? America has a rich history from a grassroots uprising that started something amazing. Similar, without the bloodshed, to what Winnipeg went through to get a professional team. The NHL had to take notice of small markets, especially Canadian ones where our sons are the bread and butter.
Derek Richards I understand where you are coming from. I think had the Jets situation mirrored that of the Cleveland Browns where the team name and records remained behind after they moved, mostly eveyone would have been on board with that. The difference is that the NFL awarded Cleveland with another franchise almost immediately after the other one announced their relocation. The Browns were not in existence for 2-3 years. The Jets went 20 years in between their 2 incarnations. That is tough to do the same thing. I'm not in your situation, so it's easy for me to say accept it and move on. I guess you just have to look at it realistically and understand that the old Jets history will never revert back to the new team. You got a team back and the name back, so this was the price you had to pay for that.
The Jets remain the only, "Club Team" to beat the Soviets is an example of our history, in no way would anyone in Arizona even know that, including Austin Mathews. Who best to Keep those historical moments alive but the people that lived it, experienced it. Yes the Atlanta history is also relevant, but not cold war era relevant, more like Bay of Pigs relevant.
If Winnipeg wears an American teams jersey, no. If the shoe was on the other foot, would the Phoenix/NHL/Arizona/Whatever-you-want-to-call-them Coyotes ever wear a jets jersey? I may be mistaken but I don't think so. I also don't think a single fan in Arizona, never mind Atlanta, would have or pretend to have any connections to Canada unless you include all the snowbirds in the crowd. The club died in Atlanta, but hey, i'm sure someone somewhere thinks New Orleans would be a stellar market for expansion too.
That seems a silly way to decide whether a team should wear a throwback or not. The Coyotes would not wear a Jets jersey now, no, but if they had worn it during a warm up before the team went back to Winnipeg, I don't have an issue with it. The club didn't die in Atlanta. They got moved. The Cleveland Barons died. They were absorbed by the Minnesota North Stars in 1977.
The Hockey Guy I feel like these are the same people in Canada who tell other Canadians not to cheer for an American based team because they’re not American lol
As a Jets fan, I don't worry or hate the connection to Atlanta, but that's not my primary look back to the past. I look back to the past that Winnipeg hosted an WHA/NHL franchise. I have ZERO problems with the Thrashers history being the Jets now....but that's not totally the history I personally look back to. Franchise records don't matter, legacies do.
Hockey guy Winnipeg Jets Were a very good team but had the bad luck of losing to the Stanley Cup champion Calgary Flames and the Stanley Cup champions Edmonton Oilers even Wayne Gretzky said that the Winnipeg Jets were a very good team and they were lucky to beat them
Like I said in another comment, they reached .500 three times in the 80s. They escaped the first round twice. They even finished behind lousy Canucks and Kings teams a few times. The old Jets never had the needed depth or goaltending for a long playoff run.
I dont like Jets that much but i liked Trashers tho and you spelled that right, Kristian Vesalainen is very talented i saw him live when they came to play here (Im Finnish :D)
Derek Richards The Jets franchise was the Atlanta Thrashers at one point. They are a part of the Jets. Now your history with the 72-79 WHA team and the 79-96 NHL team is an even bigger part of y'all and more relatable. I could be completely wrong about this tho.
Ok I am officially activating my passion retroactively to those 35 wins in 08-09. There I feel so much better! NOT. I'm actually more excited that both Winnipeg and Atlanta have centers for disease control.
No one in Winnipeg gives a shit about the Thrashers legacy. The NHL took our team away and then spit in our face when they decided to prop the Coyotes up financially in the desert. The only reason they even came back is because TNSE was ready to pick up a team right then and there (they almost got the Coyotes back) and then the Atlanta owners wanted to get rid of their team and sold. The reason Winnipeg had a 9 season win in the 80s was because our team was absolutely decimated upon the WHA teams merging with the NHL. Can't remember exact numbers but they were barely allowed to keep anyone during the expansion. Now you get a team like Vegas coming in that instantly becomes a contender? Jets also never made it past second round because every year the had to play Gretzky and the Oilers who were, uhhhh let's say pretty good back in the day. Don't get me wrong Winnipeg is ecstatic we have a team in the NHL again and we won't take it for granted, but to pretend we owe anything to the Atlanta part of the franchise is silly. They've kept the Dan Snyder Memorial award going from Atlanta which is awesome, but that's about it. Fuck Bettman
Ok, this video has some problems. The original Jets were a real decent team with some real history. They owned the WHA, gave Bobby Hull the million dollar contract, and then the NHL fucked them during the merger and stole their best players. That’s where the 9-win season came from. We had Hawerchuk, we had Selanne and his unbreakable record. People in this city loved this team, and honestly, as a Vancouverite I don’t think you can understand how personal and intimate it was between the team and the city. People even say Winnipeg felt dead from 1996 onwards, and things really are picking up again when the NHL came back. No Jets fan is “triggered” by us being the Thrashers. But don’t tell me the Thrashers were on the upswing. Watch when Mark Scheifele was drafted, look at TSN’s rankings for what our top-prospects were. Look at the opening night roster against the Habs.
Live in Atlanta- moved from Hartford. So basically if you want your team to move- just move me into the city. Switched to Tampa Bay Lightning because I have family there and it is easier for me to get to games there than Nashville. Atlanta Thrasher's games we a lot of fun- the Philips center was perfect for hockey. I never thought Kovalchuk played with any passion. I've got a new with tags jersey for him that i never bothered to wear- If he comes back to the NHL it might be worth something to someone.
Oh Shannon, I love what you do but...I’m surprised you are surprised by the reaction of Jet’s fans. In the past you have talked fondly about how you grew up cheering for the Bruins because your dad cheered for Montreal. The other night you showed how painful the state of the Canucks made you. Older Jets fans have the memories and bias and they hang onto them like all fans do. We don’t think about what Atlanta did because we weren’t cheering for them. Now we are cheering for the re-born Jets and reliving old memories. Which is only human nature.
But without Atlanta, there are no Jets right now. The NHL doesn't expand to Winnipeg over Vegas or Seattle. That's my point. What is happening in Winnipeg is happening because of Atlanta.
Here's the thing Shannon I think Jets fans get upset about you using a Thrashers logo when talking about the Jets success this season because they feel it's like you aren't giving them credit for the team they are. The only Thrashers still on the team are the veteran core like Byfuglien, Wheeler, Little, Enstrom, and Chiarot. All the young talent on the team was Drafted by the Jets not the Thrashers Sheifele, Lowry, Trouba, Hellebuyck, Morrissey, Copp Ehlers, Connor, Roslovic, and Laine. Ever since the move they have slowly been phasing out the Thrashers players like Kane, Bogosian, Pavelec, and Ladd. I personally don't have a problem with you liking Thrashers gear and even using it once in awhile while talking about the Jets but they are the Jets i don't see you using a Nordique logo when talking about Colorado and their success. Jets fans love their team and I think can be a bit over the top but when you are talking about the Jets, Jets fans expect to see the logo they love and cheer for. I am all for acknowledging the franchise's history and its achievements should be celebrated whether won with a Thrasher's jersey or Jets one.
If I had a set of magnets from the early 90s, I would totally use Whalers and Nordiques ones for the Avs and Canes. I do respect the Jets. The Jets moved from Atlanta in 2011. No teams have many players left from their 10-11 rosters. It's still the same franchise though. Like I said in this video, I have both current Jets jerseys. I want the Heritage Classic one, too. Without the Thrashers, there isn't a Jets team in Winnipeg. There's zero chance the NHL would have expanded there instead of Vegas. I am still surprised they didn't try to get them into Kansas City instead.
TheCrazedSplicer I view it as just using an old logo, or old jerseys. It’s like when he uses the old Florida Panthers logo. The Thrashers logos are previous logos in the history of the franchise, and old Thrashers jerseys are a previous style of the franchise. It’s just a different part of the franchise.
One more thing The reason the Jets were so bad and only won nine games was because the NHL was scared of the Winnipeg Jets and the WHA so when they offered to allow the Jets Into the NHL the stripped us of all our players. Ensuring that we would have a shitty team for years as punishment. Unlike Vegas who in their first year in the league is good enough to compete and make the playoffs
I was just watching your picks for the Stanley video and I noticed that you have put up some Vegas odds (the gambling side of the city not the hockey team) I'm from Vegas and I do love the team and how they are breaking records. I like to use your predictions to try and bet on the games you have very good incite and knowledge about the game keep it up. if you ever want to know about how the point spread or what is called the money line works here in Vegas just let me Know. I have made a few $$$ off parlay tickets off some of your predictions. thanks and keep up all the good work.
I see the Jets as the Jets. I don’t think about the Hawerchuk Jets, or the Thrashers that relocated here. This is the Winnipeg Jets with a whole new logo! We do have our favourites from the old Jets....Hawerchuk, Selanne, so it’s only fair to not forget great players on the Thrashers team. The Jets only has 4 Thrashers still playing now....Buff and Wheeler only played there one season, Little and Enstom the other 2 players and since coming back I have watched Schiefele get drafted and all the young talent we have gotten since. But I really don’t mind when they use Thrashers stats, I get why as I’m sure the Coyotes use Jet stats for their team. But for me the only time I talk about the Thrashers is when we are breaking their records....
My theory on why the thrashers were moved to Winnipeg is that the 2008 housing market crash caused the US dollar to drops significantly and made it equal to the Canadian dollar. As we all know this is what Bettmen is looking for when it come to franchises in Canada. So when Bettmen saw this he immediately wanted to put a franchise in Canada, but no teams were on the market until 2011 and at this point the USD and the CAD were still pretty much equal. This caused Bettmen to want the thrashers to move to Canada because it was a good time for him to do so, money wise, and he felt that Canada needed another team. This had nothing to do with a lack of fans in Atlanta or a lack of fans elsewhere wanting to keep the team in Atlanta. So Bettmen did what he always does and made a decision based purely on money and not on trying to make the fans happy.
No way Bettmen wanted a team in Winnipeg, had no choice at the time. Winnipeg as grassroots passion that they can't ignore, just like the first time in the late 1970's. We keep winning the fight for small markets, but will never see a draft or All Star game. Nashville has the same population as Winnipeg but is the Favored son, Why?
That's what I don't understand corporate moves VS deep passion. Gretzky to LA, Teemu to Anaheim all corporate league directed BS. The NHL can afford to ignore the Jets, sadly its that simple.
When it comes to the playoffs what the team did in past season doesn't matter, every team has to win for the first time some team just take longer to get there. The Kings took 45 years. Before winning their first cup the Penguins and Devils didn't really had the best history. So who knows, maybe this year we get a Caps vs Sharks final. As for the team history, thats what it is the team history, the team is the Winnipeg Jets they are in the same city they have the same name they should have the same history if the Jets come out tomorrow and say number 9, 10 and 25 are now retired no one would tell them they can't do that its not part of their history, everyone would embrace it and say its nice of them to recognize what those players did for the Jets history. Its not to take anything away from the Thrashers but that part of history belongs to Atlanta in the same way of what happen to the Flames before they moved to Calgary also belong to Atlanta. The difference with the Jets and Senators as oppose to the Wild, Sharks, Maple Leafs, Islanders, Penguins, Flyers and Blues is the Senators and Jets have the same name then the old team before them.
That is one of the very few Thrashers jerseys I can stand. I actually like that one, and the home one that went with it wasn't too bad. But man I can't stand the other Thrasher jerseys.
ohhh as a jets fan I embrace the history of the thrashers... buuuut I also embrace the jets 1.0 as well as the WHL jets. Have to disagree with the jets 1.0 totally sucked.. yeah we got gutted when the NHL absorbed us.. but don't forget the jets that made playoffs did almost beat the gretzky oilers. I mean if we did how far do they go?
Emisoccer • It happens ya know like there's a lot that has to go right for a team to really contend and be a threat to win the cup, that's why over the last ~25 years there's only been ~10 teams to win the cup in a league with 30 teams (not including Vegas because it's year one)
I want to see Colorado play a preseason game against Hartford in Quebec City. Colorado as quebec and Carolina as Hartford. Then another preseason game in Hartford with Carolina as Hartford and Colorado as Quebec.
I saw this and laughed. Here's to hoping at the franchise level we can get our old records back. Arizona doesn't care about the Jets 1.0 history any more than Jets fans care about Thrashers history.
I'm perfectly okay with the fact that Jets came from the Thrashers, but the reason the league doesn't ever really talk about it is that Atlanta Spirit Group retained the rights to the Thrashers name and logo. TNSE doesn't have the rights to it
I’d prefer to associate the team with the city. The jets are not Atlanta, cause they gone. Just like Arizona isn’t the old jets. Legacy stays in the city.
Cass , if that logic applies then how do franchise records work? All stats stay with the team. The Wild have nothing to do with the North Stars, legacy is with Dallas
jaden ippersiel It would be awesome in my opinion, but as far as I know Atlanta Spirit Group had retained the rights and logos to the Atlanta Thrashers, including their logos, so I don’t think that could happen.
I get your point. In my humble opinion, the legacy stays with the city if the team changes names. I.E. Baltimore Colts vs Indianapolis Colts & Cleveland Browns vs Baltimore Ravens. Browns & Colts kept the histories while the Ravens, although a relocation form Cleveland, started with a fresh slate. For that matter, I can use the Athletics vs the Phillies or the Royals. The Rams and Raiders have will have 6 moves total between Ohio, California, Missouri, & Nevada when all this dancing is finished. Same team names, history follows them. I know that there are examples that buck my thoughts such as the Oilers-Titans-Texans and some others. It is all up for debate. Maybe someone should do a video series about franchise relocation vs expansion and histories associated with the moves. NFL, MLB, NHL, CFL, & NBA- lots of material there.
the browns also bought there record books because they knew they where coming back because the NFL said so almost as soon as they where moved surely the Jets could have done the same
Jets fans refuse to acknowledge that the Thrashers ever existed. They pretend they never left WPG to begin with and try to awkwardly merge two completely different franchises with painful results. Dale Hawerchuk, part of the ceremonial puck drop for the Heritage Classic the other week: I don’t remember him ever lacing up a Thrashers sweater? Look up at the rafters in MTS Centre, they have retired numbers on banners of 80s-90s jets players with Jets2.0 logos at the bottom. Does that mean Bobby Hull was technically a Thrasher? Or does it instead mean hall of famers like Shane Doan have to be retroactively indoctrinated to their totally bogus HoF? It’s completely insane how this fan base and organization thinks in terms of what franchise is theirs and what franchise isn’t. By this logic, their rafters should have Hull, Doan, and Kovalchuk all next to one another, and for the Coyotes and Thrashers DIFFERENT histories to be erased all together.
Cliff Murphy I agree. I also think since they thrashers were a southern team hurt too. If they relocated From a northern city they would be mentioned a lot more
Look man the name Jets to Winnipeg is like Oilers for Edmonton of that makes sense. There's a reason why all their higher tear pro teams are named after planes
It's way more than just that. Look at Winnipeg on a map. It was where we had our biggest airforce base. Right now it's about an hour west in Portage the Prairie where they moved. The logo that they have on their Jersey is the Canadian Airforce Logo with the Maple leaf being replaced by a Jet. That Jet if you live in Winnipeg you have seen it on Highway 1. What I am getting at... Jets is to Winnipeg what the name Oilers or even Senators or Capitals or the Wailers or the Stars or Blues is to their cities. Hockey has that kind of relationship in naming their franchises exactly what the city is.
as a guy who claims to know alot about hockey history, you sure glossed over the fact that the jets from the 80's stood toe-to-toe with the best of the smythe division during their tenure. for those non-hockey "history buffs", that would include Wayne Gretzky's Oilers during the great Oilers dynasty. if the jets were in any other division at the time they would have made it to the division conference finals.
have to admit if you are commenting on possible negative feed back from you using the thrashers magnet instead of a jets... yeah man to some it could be seen as disrespectful. Since winnipeg has been back people in other hockey forums and what not have used the trashers logo or continued to refer to the jets as the trashers as a slam not as a hey what a rich history. Sooo when seeing that thrashers deal up there could cause people to react to it like ooh another troll. aaaand you have to admit for the most part people tuning in to hear your opinion are IN to hockey.. I started watching this channel at first to hear anything said about the jets, and I wouldn't be surprised if other jets fans did or do the same. So if you take hardcore hockey fans in any respect you gotta expect the passion to be negative at times if one side feels slighted. No atlanta flames paraphernalia?
I have an Atlanta Flames hat, jersey and intend to get stickers to turn into magnets as well. The tricky part is that older stickers tend to be rare and expensive. I will have all of the defunct and moved teams in time and will certainly be willing to use those logos on my board at various times because I appreciate all of hockey's history.
Hey Shannon, I know this is off-topic, but can you come up with a video expressing your thoughts on the Calgary Flames preaching mediocrity for the last three decades? It seems that no matter what they do, they would always end up in the middle of the standings. I mean FOUR playoff series wins since their 1989 Stanley Cup win? Ouch. The Flames never learn. Some things gotta change. And I mean big changes.
I think your perception of hockey is you enjoy of 31 teams in the conflict here is that the perception of a Winnipeg jet fan is for our Winnipeg Jets only. The passion for hockey in the city is huge. You come across as a bit insulting when you mention the thrashers. We are well aware Of our history
Hey Hockey Guy, I too, was miffed at you placing a Thrashers Logo on your white board for Stanley Cup contenders. Not because I'm in denial but because you sound like your in denial. Your denying that the Great Gretzky on the best team in the history of the National league has himself stated that the team that gave them the most difficulty was the Jets of Winnipeg. Your negating the fact that without the WHA Jets going all in on Bobby Hull and the Finns and Swedes, your beloved Nord's and Whales wouldn't even exist as the Avs and Canes, not to mention that the Great Oilers dynasty doesn't get off the ground. How difficult did the NHL make it on the Jets upon entry into the big league as payback for Bobby Hull. Well it was not as Vegas does Vegas things, so yes, nine wins was what Winnipeg had pay for being allowed into the league in lieu of $500 Million. Have you heard Wheeler talk about showing up at the rink in Altanta to empty seats (not the BS inflated published attendance) but the actual people in the stands. Very difficult for even professionals to get excited about it, but I guess we should pay homage to a dead bird instead of a passion that shook the NHL into an unwanted expansion into smaller markets. Your welcome BTW.
None of your arguments convince me. Just because Jets fans were happy to get a team from Atlanta, doesn't mean they don't deserve to be called by their team's real name and their logo. Pretty disrespectful. Jets are not the first relocation franchise but it's the only team you refer to by their old name and logo.
Hi, Avs fan here. If the Avs did a game in the Nordiques jersey, I'd be thrilled. I even own one myself, and I didn't start following the team until they moved to Colorado. If THG puts up a Nordiques logo while talking about the Avs, I absolutely am behind that, because it's the same franchise. The Atlanta Thrashers and the Winnipeg Jets are the same franchise too, and you should respect that. Numerous players on your roster were part of the Atlanta Thrashers team, and that's cool! It makes your team's history more complex. There's no real reason to bash on this fact, and it baffles me that Jets fans do so.
Also, they still sell Nordiques gear at the Pepsi Center, and people still buy it. The Nordiques logo isn't even as cool as the Thrashers logo, but people still buy it for the history.
You didn't have a hockey history before the Nordiques came. Makes sense to embrace it. Jets fans are being asked to ignore their first 26 years of WHA / NHL hockey ignoring the players the watched and cheered in place of players they didn't watch. Very different situation.
My point is, you can honor the franchise that you lost while also honoring the franchise you gained. Getting upset about a logo that's part of your history seems like a waste of time.
kinda dissappointed w/this video. 1. jets wasn't able to move forward in the playoffs because they always faced the 80s gretzky oilers. 2. thrashers were absolutely not trending up before moving to winnipeg. when your best prospect is patrice comrier. and you only have 1 line that can produce offensively (little-ladd-wheeler). and your dcorps is made up of underperformong players (3rd overall bogosian everyone?). a very mediocre goalie (pavelec). a former front office group that always rushes its players, never really cared about the team bec they only bought it to get the atl hawks. you know your team is fucked. if you looked at the current team there is a reason that the only hold over from the thrashers is little, buff and enstrom.
The Jets had three seasons above .500 in the 80s. They had a mediocre team. Atlanta had Evander Kane coming up before the move to Winnipeg. The building blocks for a good team were there.
ooh come on you can't say Atlanta had good prospects.... I mean look at the line ups winnipeg was icing the first couple years its brutal. God it was brutal up until last year.
Love your videos and insights but I think you're wrong here. Cities don't care about the "franchise" they care about what happened with "their" team in their city. Jets fans care about Nilsson, Hawerchuck, Selanne, and Essensa who they watched and cheered for. Not Kovalychuk and Heatley who they never saw. Phoenix doesn't care about Thomas Steen, all 130 of their fans want to hear about Doan, and that's how it should be! Atlanta definitely did not have building blocks when they got to Winnipeg. Outside a few players the team sucked and had no prospects. Bogosian, Kane, and Burmistrov were young and on the roster. Only ahl prospects were Postma / Cormier. Wear Thrashers gear all you want - they're part of the league history who deserved better. Just don't use it to represent the Jets. Go crazy with me for a moment and imagine the habs leaving Montreal. 10 years later Carolina moves to Montreal. Do you think habs fans would care to hear about Ron Francis, Kevin Dineen and Eric Staal?
The Hockey Guy gotta disagree here they didn’t have a mediocre team they ALWAYS lost to Edmonton and when they didn’t make it over 500. Was normally injuries, especially to their tendies
We’re a passionate city and sometimes we get caught up in our pride. I wasn’t around to see the old jets play, but I think people have a very personal attachment to the fact that we’re a hockey city.
Riley C bombers r shit
Rhys Carter Fack off
The Thrashers jerseys were always sick. I miss them as a Canes fan. That was a good rivalry for a while there.
Should have adopted the Preds.
Matt i grew up in winnipeg man and i really think you should go see a game in Winnipeg sometime. Sounds like you would love it.
I mean, who would they have drafted beside stefan? The twins were set for Vancouver and the others were probably even worse than Patrik. The draft class was horrible beside the Sedins, period. Had the thrashers drafted just a year earlier they would have created a great team, ah well...
its 100% on my bucket list!
just typical bad luck then
It is sad that people try to forget about the Thrashers when they had a team that had a following and the ownership screwed the fans of Atlanta
I kinda miss the Thrashers tbh. I was still relatively young when they moved, but there's a nostalgia to seeing the logo and remembering the late 2000s-mid 2010s lol
I have no idea how people can be offended by this
Cancerous HockeyFan people get offended by anything these days
What do you mean people? What if i don't identify myself as "people" you both offended me. Naw I'm kidding. Yes people are always offended these days.
Fearlessprice81 lmao you're right I shouldn't have assumed your species
XxHarounXx it's ok it happens
Original jets were stuck in the old smythe division ...powerhouse oilers and flames of the 80's. Nobody beat them
I have always been a Pens fan, but I had also loved the Thrashers during their existence.
Fuck THG.
The thrashers are why Winnipeg is my favorite Canadian team (I'm American)... Playing nhl 06 and 10 I loved the thrashers jerseys
Clark Wilson I hated the jerseys for so long now I love the unique jersey
I loved the light blue home jersey. I loved the team and I’m a canes fan.
Conor Power I'm a pens fan... Coincidentally the yotes, canes, and panthers are my three other favorite teams... But yeah I bought a (fake obviously I'm not rich) danny heatley light blue one, it's a little small but I love it and it looks good hanging on my dorm wall
Clark Wilson I have a real Ilya Kovalchuk light blue home and a Mariam Hossa Dark third. I love them.
Ok, that was propably most passionate speech since Winston Chruchill. This guy is true hockey fan, if there ever was one.
Every morning when i watch THG's newest videos it just leads to me playing NHL for hours...

It was only the next day I heard media heads flip out about this "afront" the franchise history which is wrong because that particular franchise started in 99'
Nothing Good the old jets are the city’s history the thrashers are the franchise history
Conor Power you think Carolina sucked? At least you have a cup
Look at the 1997 Carolina roster. They were AWFUL. Only Wesley was worth mentioning and if you’re young you don’t know who that is. It’s been long enough since the jets moved. Get over where the team came from and get on supporting them to a cup.
I would hope young kids know who Glen Wesley is. Guy is a legend.
scho kakolamy point is he isn’t Bobby Orr. He isn’t renowned.
Ye, not debating your whole post, it's spot on.
I actually miss the thrashers.. but at the same time I’m glad Winnipeg has a hockey team
Somewhere a Winnipeg fan just denied thrashers history. Meanwhile in the jets locker room no one noticed.
.....and when the Thrashers left Atlanta; hardly anyone there noticed.
the winnipeg jets are gonna win the cup watch them. i love this video keep it up bro
That would be nice
Probably my bandwagon team for the playoffs simce my teams suck hope laine isnt hurt to bad
ken50700 I hope the WCF is Vegas and Winnipeg
Can’t wait for the whiteout in Winnipeg.
Hockey guy
Winnipeg Jets Were a very good team but had the bad luck of losing to the Stanley Cup champion Calgary Flames and the Stanley Cup champions Edmonton Oilers even Wayne Gretzky said that the Winnipeg Jets were a very good team and they were lucky to beat them
Like I said in another comment, they reached .500 three times in the 80s. They escaped the first round twice. They even finished behind lousy Canucks and Kings teams a few times.
The old Jets never had the needed depth or goaltending for a long playoff run.
Winnipeg deserves it way more but living in ATL I miss those unis and kovy
Cameron Martin I think that the original Jets should never have moved in the first place. And it’s sad that the Thrashers didn’t get a good owner.
Good video!! Keep up the good work!!
This was fantastic
Imagine Kovalchuk going to Jets next season :DDd
Jar Jar Trumps not even a jets fan but starting to like this team more every day they have that vesalanen to probably didnt spell that right
I dont like Jets that much but i liked Trashers tho and you spelled that right, Kristian Vesalainen is very talented i saw him live when they came to play here (Im Finnish :D)
Vesalainen could be ready for NHL soon as next season, he's an very big guy and great at corners
Jar Jar Trumps him laine and kovalchuck woupd be a force
Embrace your history Jets fans. It makes things so much easier and fun.
We do embrace OUR history but others want us to embrace someone elses history.
Batflip 09 Ya, XD Good times.
M B I think he is a Nashville fan? Not sure?
Derek Richards The Jets franchise was the Atlanta Thrashers at one point. They are a part of the Jets. Now your history with the 72-79 WHA team and the 79-96 NHL team is an even bigger part of y'all and more relatable. I could be completely wrong about this tho.
Ok I am officially activating my passion retroactively to those 35 wins in 08-09. There I feel so much better! NOT. I'm actually more excited that both Winnipeg and Atlanta have centers for disease control.
Im a jets fan simply because i was a thrashers fan
Fuck Bettman
we go to keep two, and ended up choosing very poorly.
Kept Scott Campbell and Morris Lukowich.
I love the blue jersey so much I have one but the logo is peeling 😢
Live in Atlanta- moved from Hartford. So basically if you want your team to move- just move me into the city. Switched to Tampa Bay Lightning because I have family there and it is easier for me to get to games there than Nashville. Atlanta Thrasher's games we a lot of fun- the Philips center was perfect for hockey. I never thought Kovalchuk played with any passion. I've got a new with tags jersey for him that i never bothered to wear- If he comes back to the NHL it might be worth something to someone.
ATLANTA THRASHERS IN THE HOCKEY HALL OF FAME
01. 2013: Chris Chelios
02. 2017: Mark Recchi
It was only a failure because the owner. Had they a few winning seasons ATL would have turned up.
A true hockey city would've supported the team in all years. Atlanta has what, 4-5 million people?
Dude I live in Atlanta now and was here when Atlanta moved and I may be a Pens fan but it was said to see them go.
One more thing
The reason the Jets were so bad and only won nine games was because the NHL was scared of the Winnipeg Jets and the WHA so when they offered to allow the Jets Into the NHL the stripped us of all our players.
I have made a few $$$
off parlay tickets off some of your predictions. thanks and keep up all the good work.
If you got a Barons sweater it would be awesome.
Little did THG know both Vegas AND Winnipeg would make the conference finals
I'm a Thrashers fan carry over. If only the Thrashers still were around. Arizona would be in Winnipeg.
i got nhl 10 just to play for the thrashers on be a pro
I cant find your Video describing how Chevy turned the Thrashers into a contender?
I always like bad expansion teams and so I always had some affinity for the Thrashers. I love that jersey... just not the blue ones.
ohhh as a jets fan I embrace the history of the thrashers... buuuut I also embrace the jets 1.0 as well as the WHL jets. Have to disagree with the jets 1.0 totally sucked.. yeah we got gutted when the NHL absorbed us.. but don't forget the jets that made playoffs did almost beat the gretzky oilers. I mean if we did how far do they go?
That Thrashers jersey looks very Captain Marvel.
Also having Atlanta on that board today as a contender means Atlanta 2018/19/20 cup champs confirmed
Great video...
Question. What do you think about Clayton Keller breaking the Coyotes franchise record for most points as a record?
Teemu Selanne......
I saw this and laughed. Here's to hoping at the franchise level we can get our old records back. Arizona doesn't care about the Jets 1.0 history any more than Jets fans care about Thrashers history.
Emisoccer • I saw it on the Coyotes Facebook page.
Mike Wachal I saw it on the Coyotes Facebook page
Hartford was a great example.. i do see tom dundin having a game in hartford with the whalers jersey on... do the same for the trashers..
I'm perfectly okay with the fact that Jets came from the Thrashers, but the reason the league doesn't ever really talk about it is that Atlanta Spirit Group retained the rights to the Thrashers name and logo. TNSE doesn't have the rights to it
I still like kovalchuk. That said jets have some demons to face.
I’d prefer to associate the team with the city. The jets are not Atlanta, cause they gone. Just like Arizona isn’t the old jets. Legacy stays in the city.
Cass ,
if that logic applies then how do franchise records work? All stats stay with the team. The Wild have nothing to do with the North Stars, legacy is with Dallas
Exactly! like the Browns of Cleveland.
Who would like to see the jets have a blue thrashers logo jersey as their alternate?
M B same franchise
Sure if Winnipeg didn't already have a history like Arizona doesn't. Winnipeg doesn't need coattails
jaden ippersiel It would be awesome in my opinion, but as far as I know Atlanta Spirit Group had retained the rights and logos to the Atlanta Thrashers, including their logos, so I don’t think that could happen.
Apparently they did, since they couldn't keep their original team.
NFL, MLB, NHL, CFL, & NBA- lots of material there.
the browns also bought there record books because they knew they where coming back because the NFL said so almost as soon as they where moved surely the Jets could have done the same
Well...you were right it would be tough, and they did it.But then the doors fell off.
The Thrashers record their final year in Atlanta was 34-36-12 so it wasn't a winning record.
If they relocated From a northern city they would be mentioned a lot more
The Jets should play 1 game a year in the infinite energy center. For atlanta
Winnipeg is bringing the cup home this year, we havent even shown our true powers yet bro
Gary Martens yes bro go winnipeg jets
Haha Nashville is your road block
Brandon brandon, we dont need that kind of negativity right now son!
First you need to get past the Predators
You have to win a playoff game first.
Look man the name Jets to Winnipeg is like Oilers for Edmonton of that makes sense. There's a reason why all their higher tear pro teams are named after planes
The WHA Jets were under the same ownership as the New York Jets in the NFL. That's why they got the name originally.
Detroit used to be the cougars and the falcons and I don't mind a bit
as a guy who claims to know alot about hockey history, you sure glossed over the fact that the jets from the 80's stood toe-to-toe with the best of the smythe division during their tenure. for those non-hockey "history buffs", that would include Wayne Gretzky's Oilers during the great Oilers dynasty. if the jets were in any other division at the time they would have made it to the division conference finals.
have to admit if you are commenting on possible negative feed back from you using the thrashers magnet instead of a jets... yeah man to some it could be seen as disrespectful.
I will have all of the defunct and moved teams in time and will certainly be willing to use those logos on my board at various times because I appreciate all of hockey's history.
heey thats awesome! :) I still have a old pennant from them with a cpl of autographs... no idea who anymore.
also if I didn't mention before.. really enjoy your posts! keep it up! look forward to your future spot on TSN :)
Was about to make a joke that the scouts and rockies jerseys are ugly but you beat me to it
Hey Shannon, I know this is off-topic, but can you come up with a video expressing your thoughts on the Calgary Flames preaching mediocrity for the last three decades?
Seattle Thrashers
We had the Rockies and the Grizzlies, actually.
My point is, you can honor the franchise that you lost while also honoring the franchise you gained. Getting upset about a logo that's part of your history seems like a waste of time.
Jets 1.0 made the second round twice. They were swept both times.
The fact that they we're terrible in a weak division is amazing
My pick for which team comes out of the west this year is not the Predators it's the Jets. Bob.
kinda dissappointed w/this video.
1. jets wasn't able to move forward in the playoffs because they always faced the 80s gretzky oilers.
2. thrashers were absolutely not trending up before moving to winnipeg. when your best prospect is patrice comrier. and you only have 1 line that can produce offensively (little-ladd-wheeler). and your dcorps is made up of underperformong players (3rd overall bogosian everyone?). a very mediocre goalie (pavelec). a former front office group that always rushes its players, never really cared about the team bec they only bought it to get the atl hawks. you know your team is fucked.
if you looked at the current team there is a reason that the only hold over from the thrashers is little, buff and enstrom.
I'm a Thrashers fan carry over. If only the Thrashers still were around. Arizona would be in Winnipeg.
