- Mario Sports Mix is a Mario sports game for the Wii featuring Mario and company competing in four sports: hockey, basketball, dodgeball, and volleyball, along with the Final Fantasy characters who have appeared in Mario Hoops 3-on-3 as well. Slime, a Dragon Quest mascot, makes an appearance in this game, as well. This game was developed by Square Enix, who also developed Mario Hoops 3-on-3.
The game supported the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection feature, which enables players to play with other players in their region. To save any game data, three blocks of memory have to be used on the Wii system. However, due to the game's Wi-Fi compatibilities, the game data is copy protected, which means it cannot be transferred onto other Wii systems. As of May 20th 2014, Nintendo have terminated the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service, meaning that it is no longer possible to play Mario Sports Mix online.
One day in the Mushroom Kingdom, Toad is gardening flowers when suddenly, the sky turns dark, and a strange object falls from the sky and crashes. Toad is worried about the situation, so he, along with some other Toads, rushes to the crashed object to examine it. The Toads find four colored crystals: a red crystal with a basketball in it, a green crystal with a volleyball in it, a yellow crystal with a dodgeball in it, and a blue crystal with a coin in it. While observing the mysterious crystals, the Toads suddenly come up with an idea of introducing new sports - Basketball, Volleyball, Dodgeball, and Hockey - to the Mushroom Kingdom. The Toads also organize tournaments for the four sports. The best players of the tournament earn a prize: one of the four crystals that fell from the sky. Mario, his friends, and his foes are ready to play sports and enter the tournaments to find out who are the best players of the Mushroom Kingdom.
The discovery of the Sports Crystals lead to the events in the game.
When the players' team wins the Mushroom and Flower Cups, and gets to the end of the Star Cup, everything seems to be normal, but in the final round, a Star Ship appears and the players' opponent turns out to be Ninja in disguise. Ninja steals the trophy and jumps onto the Star Ship. The players follow Ninja to get the trophy back. They end up playing against the Final Fantasy team, while the Star Ship flies through space. When the players win against the Final Fantasy team, they receive one of the crystals that fell from the sky. The leader of the team uses it to power the Star Ship and take the team back home.
After players receive all four crystals, the crystals merge and turn into a dark, glowing crystal. The dark crystal takes the players to another area. In this area, players encounter the Behemoth, a creature from the Final Fantasy series. The players must defeat the monster before it defeats them. When the players defeat Behemoth, the dark energy from the dark crystal disappears and turns into a rainbow-colored crystal. The players use the crystal again to power the Star Ship to take them back home.
Sports Mix mode's story is highly identical, except after the players' team defeats the Final Fantasy team, the three Sports Mix trophies that they receive will end up merging into a dark crystal. That crystal also leads them to an alternate dimension, where the Behemoth King is found. Similarly with Behemoth, players have to defeat the Behemoth King before it takes them out. When the Behemoth King is defeated, the crystal's dark energy disappears, and it turns back into a rainbow crystal. The players use that crystal to power the Star Ship to take them back home.

Wow.. Mario and Luigi underestimate the power of Behemoth.. They fought it while playing a round of volley.. They could've easily beat it in a regular battle, and so added the challenge of keeping a ball in the air while the battle took place.
Not the first time the brothers took on world ending demons. Even all the way back before 2010.

I remember unlocking the boss fight for the first time and being so confused. I didn't know this could happen from a sports game.
I remember getting to the last boss being like oh this is weird and then seconds later ... WHAT THE HECK IS THAT A FINAL FANTASY CHARACTER... so then I did my research and yes one of the biggest crossovers was really going on.

How is it that a sports game had a final boss so epic?
When I was a kid me and my friend Nicolas would play this game for hours. My favorite was dodgeball and volleyball. That being said I always thought it was weird that the game had a final fantasy boss.

In my opinion, this game was engineered to actually be the perfect video game.

Lemme just say: I learned that Behemoth was in this game before I learned there were other Final Fantasy characters (I knew nothing about this game and saw an “Evolution of Mario Sports games Final Bosses), so I just kinda thought there was a random Final Fantasy boss in a Mario Sports game for no apparent reason.

Me and my two friends made our way to the end of this game. It was always daisy, peach, and bowser. Defeating theat monster was a huge accomplishment
That thumbnail had me thinking someone had somehow modded Mario into Kingdom Hearts 1. This discovery is almost better to me.
I remember find this accidently, i was sick one day and decided to beat the game, and when i had gotten all of the cups i expected a hey you did it or something. then they opened a black hole and i was like wait...and then i wasn't at all expecting a fucking boss monster and it freaked me the fuck out. little to say i kicked its ass.
My favorite part about this game was when my best friend and I would try and guess which AI would win when they fought against each other

Top 10 Boss Battles
Damm, this game was wild at the end. As a kid, the only characters I actually knew were final fantasy characters were the cactaur and the black mage. (Favorites of mine off of appearance alone) so I knew some crossover was happening but I didn't think that the other characters were related to final fantasy for some reason. So when i got all four Crystal's and realized I had to fight a beast that was an outright boss, with the same sports mechanics I used through the entire game, I was basically jumpscared through excitement and confusion. I don't know how younger me would react if I told him that after he got all of the Crystal's he would encounter a final fantasy boss and beat it via sports.
I love this game.

Getting Basketball on the final round of Sports Mix Star Cup was enough to make my brother’s sanity break - the Expert AI in this game for Basketball in particular is brutal, and Kenny kept on losing (even DRAWING on rare occasions) with Ninja and the Mages.
He was SO obsessed with just that one match, and despite me telling him to just reset the entire cup at that point so he could get better RNG, he wouldn't listen because he was so close to facing Behemoth King.
One time we had friends over and I wanted to play the game with them, only to find out that Kenny was trying to get to Behemoth King again. I tried asking him politely to stop multiple times, but he kept saying no.
Would you believe me when I say that it actually took me forcing the Wiimote away from my brother AND my parents giving him a temporary ban from the Wii (or Wii U, whatever we had back then) just to stop him?
I miss this game Nintendo please make a sequel to this with squaresoft heck even a remake for switch would satisfy me

When the behemoth is about to rush at you use the green shell to stop it cuz once you hit it with the green shell the behemoth gets distracted and stops the charge
Also when you have a rock in your hand you can collect coins from item blocks when you have the rock in your hand
