  • One more rainy day to deal with... But that doesn't stop me from enjoy some nice train action in Dalton, GA, where CSX & NS cross each other at grade. All video for the day was taken under the cover area of the freighthouse, so no shots from the Gordon St. bridge or on top of the public parking garage. Still, I enjoyed the day with lots of trains and a working ATCS by my side.
Train action was busier than the day before now that CSX traffic ran normally after the washout. It started slow but then gradually picked up after lunch. Action overall was pretty good considering that only one train goes through the diamonds at a time, regardless of NS or CSX. There were some neat consists, including the "GoRail" SD60E #6963 on southbound mixed freight NS M75 (Extra NS 175) and two more ex-BN triclops SD60M's came along with southbound mixed freight NS 361. Northbound mixed freight NS 370 came through with three SD40-2's, southbound autorack CSX Q211 went through with a low number AC44, and earlier southbound autorack NS I85 (Extra 285) had a CSX leader. Before lunch, a Brandt power unit came through on NS trackage.
The busy action continues on the second half video.
On a side note, I highly recommend the Oakwood Cafe in town to grab a bite to eat, great food at great prices. It is only two blocks away from the freighthouse.
*Note: I'm really really NOT GOOD w/ train symbols. I try to get as many as I can through my scanner or asking other railfans around me (if any).*

+david pinewhistle Thanks! Yes, it is a great spot to relax and watch trains. You have both NS & CSX going through there (they cross each other at grade so only one train goes through at a time), and there is an ATCS monitor (a color-coded display of the rail lines) to help you. Also two blocks there is the Oakwood Cafe where you can sit down and dine, great food and prices, I highly recommend the place.

Yes it is! Dalton is a nice place to watch trains and R&R. Only one train can cross the diamond at a time, most of which was M75 (extra-175) with the GoRail SD60E (NS #6963) trailing. You can also watch trains on the Gordon St. overpass and on top of your public parking garage. Next to the freighthouse was Southern Railway's Crescent City private car. In addition to the GoRail, three of the SD40-2's returned on NS 370. A Brandt power unit arrived on NS trackage before lunch. A couple of CBFX leaser SD60M's trailed on NS 361. Q211 featured a lone number AC44CW behind a C40-8. NS I85 (extra-285) had CSX and NS leading the way. The two CBFX 60M's (Triclops) are green, which are all ex-BN. If you look at the other video, you can see that ex-SOO SD60 as well, remember the Missouri Pacific heritage unit (UP #1982) left out of Selkirk Yard, Upstate New York on Q377 along with another Union Pacific SD70M. With that in hand the beat up locomotives were involved in the derailment on 6/27 from last year. All of them are beat up. Bad look! After ending up closing the Dalton Stay, I returned to Atlanta because I wanted to see intermodal NS 282 with the Erie heritage unit (NS #1068) trailing second & plus, I saw it again at the grade of Braswell's Brushy Mountain Rd. along with the two other regular NS trains (288 and 348).

What happens when an NS manifest visits Dalton with 9 SD40-2's on the head end?
