DIY Swirl Filter and Bio Filter Upgrade Before and After

  • DIY pond and filter. I was looking for inexpensive options to clear up my pond. The filter I was using was a simple bio filter I made out of a plastic storage bin. This had carried my pond for about 2 years, but I felt was clogging up to frequently and the mechanical filtration method (fine sponge) was clogging way to fast. I looked for other options.
One I came across on some Aquaponics sites was something called a 'Swirl Filter". The idea behind it was simply a vortex of water with large particles being pushed toward the outside of the container while the return water was in the center. The idea being large things get stuck in the container were they can be rinsed out. I watched a few videos and searched Craigslist for some rain barrels. I'm positive the same results could be obtained with your typical cylinder garbage cans you can pick up at any hardware store.
I've used similar large volume biological container set ups for indoor high fish load salt water set ups. One of which was containing a 4 foot long reef shark. That was simply done with stacked storage containers filled with hair curlers.
I don't have a lot of money and I'm fairly handy around the house so I gave it a try. I'm very impressed with my results.
I connected all the videos I made so its a before and after pond filter upgrade. Sorry about the terrible narration, I just did these videos quickly without any kind of script.
The reason for this video is so that Pond Fish hobbyists who want to try and keep a pond clear don't need to spend a bunch of money, they just need to make an effort.

I use barrel bio filter and filled the second one with a couple ft of lava rock and bought a bunch of scouring pads (cheap) from the dollar store and filled it up the rest of the way. Works great with very little maintenance.

You need alot more bio media. Fill that full of lava rock and have ur return on the bottom of the barrel.

Great video!! Beautiful pond.🙌😍 I would like to make some observations on your firlter setup. All is just advice to consider.1st. Your UV light will be more efficient if is located in a place where the water flow is the least! If the water flow is to rapid it will not have enough time to kill bad bacterial. In your case its right directly next after the pump flow. So flow in my opinion is to high for UV light to work efficient.
2nd. If your out take is placed (top) at the same height as your intake(top). The flow of the water will swirl on the surface as well as all the filt and go in to the intake continuously at the surface. There for having minimal filter time with your media. I see the media under the intake & the outtake as well. So very little water flow will go through it. Same with your second chamber. Ideally you want intake on top and out take on bottom or the other way around. Your main goal to have a filter to be as more efficient as possible is to have as much water flow going THROUGH the media.
I love your Christmas Tree idea.👍

I would also recommend that you install the UV system vertically rather than horizontal. You need to ensure that the UV bulb is fully submerged. Horizontal allows for an air pocket to form.

I agree that more dwell time would enhance either UV functionality. However, since there is on pump and no valves in the system, the water is moving through all the pipes at the same rate - there are no slower sections the way it’s designed. He would need to either add a 2nd, small pump dedicated to the UV, or else tee off a smaller line from the main line, diverting a smaller amount of flow through the UV.

put a right angle on the swirl filter input, below the surface, swirl in a clockwise motion.

For the swirl filter you should put lava rock at the bottom for more beneficial bacteria. I love your videos; I will be making a pond of my own this summer similar to your design. I'm going to attempt the combat the bowing that you have with lag bolts not only on the ends of 4x4's but also in the middle.

I thought about putting lava rock in the bottom. This turns the container into a dual bio filter and swirl filter, untill it gets clogged. Since the drain exit is on the top, the debre at the bottom would just settle in the rocks which isnt bad till you need to get it out via the drain. The rocks would just hinder that process. Im after collecting the large chunks and effectently removing them. Thank you for the suggestion though.

Your setup seems to be working great but I'd personally have the UV on the return to the pond. It would work more effectively after all the gunk has been removed.

Nice filter setup. I was thinking ,why dont you put a 90 degree or a 45 degree elbow on your intake pipe inside your canister to create more of a swirl by pushing the water round the sides and not directly to your outtake.

Nice job. Hope it works well for you. Was wondering how often do you change your UV bulb and clean the inside of Tetra UV tube? I have a 2,800 gal pond and 275 gal pond. I have found that my bio-filter hasn't been able to keep up and have had to filter my water through some batting material that I purchase at Walmart in the sewing department. It cleared up my pond in about 7 days but I can't keep that up forever, so thinking of installing another bio-filter on South end of the pond. Nice to see other ideas on how to combat pea green water.

  • @CHITOPICO2000
    @CHITOPICO2000 5 років тому +2

Easy Solution: Place a 90 degree elbow on both your out takes! Place a PVC pipe going down to about 2 inches from your bottom. To increase the swirl efffect, place a "T" connector at the bottom and PVC pipes coming out to the sides with end caps at the end. Drill holes on each PCV pipe that extends to the sides all going towards one single direction. Now place your media again on your barrels and now the water will swirl beautifully from the bottom through all media and to the top to the in takes! A super efficient filtration system for your GORGEOUS pond. 👍🙌

What you want to do to make a better swirl you need to put a 45°elbow on the inpipe and lower the in-pipe down in the water than its much better

Them Bulkhead fitting can be bought at a very good price on Ebay. I would be nice if there was a cheap Wrench to get to tighten them thou -- thats a pain in the rear because they will leak a bit if not very tight.

I was just watching a few pond filters in a row, and one guy mentioned that if you run your pond input water close to your pond pump then it does not allow for a full pond swirl. Then he showed how by running your entrance water to the exact opposite side of the pond as far away from the pump as you can get it, that it creates a large swirl and changes out the most amount of water possible. I would say, that if you were to extend your white pvc pipe to the opposite side of your pond as far away from your filter, then you would have an even cleaner pond than you currently do. If you do make this update, make a new video showing the before and after..

If you want more efficiency out of your small pump you need to eliminate your hard 90s it reduces your flow by 5-10% per 90

Hey bro check out Aquaponic swirl filter, their intake runs all way to bottom of container then tees off with a 45 fitting at the ends. this gives u waay better swirl.Your setup is a bit backwards. The intake is just flowing over to out. Also ADD MORE MECHANICAL!! Lava rock or Pumice Stone works really well and easy on wallet too! I like ya pond. Thumbs up!! Did u build it urslf ? Oh maybe put the UV filter last so that all the gunk has alrdy been filtered/ it'll work a lot better.. Anyway thats a cool pond.

    • @ronskopitz2360

Actually, no - it’s OK. The bacteria live on surfaces, not in the water column, so very little will make it to the UV

and the UK in places and for some things (and, I suspect, for a lot longer) - the OP is in the USA and using local measurements; you cannot expect him to change his nation's units of measurement simply because you are too lazy to convert them to whatever you use. PS please punctuate correctly, it is so confusing for someone using English if you don't

Don’t drop your pots so low. The fish love to root and stir all the debris. Also, remove all your dirt from the pots and add rocks only. The will significantly reduce the trash in your water column. I have a channel too if you want to find tips and tricks to koi ponds. Good luck!

The swirl part is not going to efficient. Put a elbow on it and run to the bottom of the barrel. The pit a tee on the bottom of the pipe and have a some 45 or 90 degree elbows coming off the tee. That will cause a significant swirling motion going from the bottom to the top of your barrel.

@@toolmand2649 Your uni seal leaks? I've probably installed 50+ with never a leak. Make sure you smooth the inside and perimeter of the hole you drill so you don't damage the uni seal. Other than that, I can't imagine a reason for one leaking. You have to use a hole saw. No margin for error on the hole size like with a bulk head. That is the first time I've ever heard of one leaking in all the discussions on fish forms about them. I'm sorry to hear yours leaked. They're so cheap and easy.

It’s like when you girlfriend wants, and you only got a toothpick. Why fish keeper always want a bigger canister, cause bigger canister can hold more bio media. Water pass though the media, the beneficial bacteria will do their job. But with such little media, the bigger the canister is, the more water will pass by, not pass though the media. You can put more media, or just change to a really small container, which the media will just fill it up, that will make sure most of the pumped water will pass through the media, that will work much better, and the water will become crystal clear
