Kids who woke up screaming in the middle of the night because of this animation are the only true enlightened people of our time. Like a veteran of some terrible conflict, they've broken through mental walls that have broadened their cognitive landscape. Rock on, Sesame Street!
What's hilarious is that my cousin and I grew up on this - and sat in Barcelona, at a historical Opera house and watching the beautiful woman, in HIstorical Spanish dresses singing Carmen....and lord help us all we could picture was this Orange and tried so hard not to laugh. You just can't Unsee some things.
This is disturbing, and I was alive to be a child when this first came out. According to my mum, i used to howl and scream. It scarred me so much, that when my mum took me to see Carmen it was to "face my fears of the Orange"..
So many people say that this scared them. I used to love it! (Plus, it was my first exposure to Carmen.)
Sesame Street was such a brilliant, magical show. I miss being a kid and watching the creative shorts like this one with really sparked so many kid's imaginations. :3
I remember watching this when I was a little kie haha! I remember the ornage used to scare me, I kept expecting ours in the kitchen to pop up and transform.
This is the first piece of an opera I ever heard and I remebered being mesmerized by it. Ever since Carmen became my very favourite opera of all. Thanks Sesame Street!
I remember watching this with my little brother, back in the 90's, when my dad uncovered old Seasame street vids...
Awesome.
this was one of my favourites .. use to make me laugh so much circa 1969
A wonderful skit. I actually like the orange being put together, and all the delightful little sound effects that are actually notes, than the singing part itself. Hilarious with her trouble to reach the high notes. You never look at your kitchen quite the same way again after you see this, or at oranges for that matter.
One of my favorite clips that I haven't seen in years!
to all those enjoying, you're very welcome, I was glad to finally share one of my favs from Sesame.
That sounds like a Moog synth unless I'm hearing it wrong.
I used to laugh at that orange when It started singing :) LOL
We need to go back to this stuff. Sesame Street has really "dumbed down" lately. This is when we learned culture and other cool things now kids are just being entertained.
that ending made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end!!!
This was always one of my favorite skits..
Yeah, this REALLY freaked me out when I was a youngster. Especially the final high note.
HILARIOUS, when the orange loses its face, after it has said "L'amour" (French for love), several times, that part always got guffaws out of me!
Totally agree. I rememer seeing this on Sesamestreet when I was little. Good old happy memories are coming back. Seeing this today made my day. :-)
I remember this. Animations were such a treat back then!
I so remember this as a baby! I just wish I could get access to an episode that featured this.
I'm 39 I watched it when I was a kid, so yeah it's MUCH MUCH Older, remember sesame street came out in 1969. I watch this in the mid 70's as a child
watched this in the late 80s. always loved the synths used here
Once a favorite, always a favorite. This is one of Sesame Street's best "just for the heck of it" clips :D
Is it a Seville orange?
L'AMOOOOOOOUR! L'AMOOOOOOOOOOOOOUR!!
Brings back crazy 70's memories.
I've seen some WAY more weird and LSD-like stuff than this on SS back then! You don't even want me to go there! LOL Stuff that tripped me out bigtime!
i loved this as a kid, I think this is where my love of music and melody began.
Song: "Habanera" (it's about a thing called Love), from the opera "Carmen", by Georges Bizet (1875).
When your fruit starts singing, throw it out!
in my time children loved the sesame street. . and how the people all over the nation accepted and love
it. hope it still runs. love yah sesame street . .
And this is why, to this day, I flip out if I hear Carmen. I loved her eyelashes when I was 4.
wow......blast from the past
l'a-MOUR!
l'a-MOOOOUR!
I hope it's beneficial to have these flashbacks.
God this thing used to give me so many nightmares growing up ... okay maybe not, but still.
you're welcome Tiny, thank you for doing the same with your site, I've checked in there from time to time over the years : )
Love this. Makes me long for my childhood just watching Sesame Street.
OMG! I haven't seen that in years! One of my favorites.
I love this!!! I heard "Carmen" on my iPod today and remembered this from my childhood. Jeez, that was a long time ago now!
This was one my first exposure to opera and the arts - much appreciated SS.
I'll be seeing it live in a couple of weeks - am looking forward to it muchly :-)
I remember seeing this in the '80s, too. I never knew that Henson did it!
This takes me way back - I remember, then when I
saw the real opera Carmen, I was like -
"Hey, That was the ORANGE!"
Orange you glad this was posted :) Love this clip. I used to pretend to hit the high note and spin my eyes. What fun! Ahh..the good old days.
seems the annoying orange isn't so original after all...
I had a sudden remebrance of this thing and had to verify to myself that this actually existed. I also remember that I really hated this as a kid. And after finding this one I have to say: I still do.
Lets all put mops on our heads, urgh. My bro did that to me once, and all of these insects fell out and started crawling all over my face and everything. It was grim.
WOW! I have been looking for this for YEARS and thought I might never see it again. It had a really strong impact on me as a kid.. I half loved it and was half-traumatized by it. Funny.. it's the bit that stuck firmest in my mind out of the whole show. I am surprised to see so many of you other (then) kids had the same reaction as I did. Thanks for sharing! :D
Another pre-kindergarten favorite. I never tired of watching this one.
Oh my god! This was one of my favorite little things ever on Sesame Street as a child! Thank you so much for posting it!
The part where the orange loses its,or "her" face always(and still does)get a GUFFAW out of me!!!
I love the old school synths on this joint
Thankyou for uploading this!!!!!!!!!!! :D
Sesame street was my introduction to Opera and Classical Music.
LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!!
If you're asking me what year this was created I don't know. It aired in the 70's though if that's any help.
I know. I always thought that when she said "L'amour" over and over, that she somehow cracked and I was in danger of getting attacked by her. How horrifying. But I still like to eat oranges!
One of my favorite Sesame Street clips from when I was a kid!
I remember this one!!! How I used to love watching this over and over. I swear, that was my very first exposure to an aria. Bravo, Sesame Street, bravo!!!
I LOVE this clip. It would be great if Sesame Street sis more random stuff like this.
Im astonished! I saw this clip like a zillion times when I was a kiddo... I cant describe my feelings of seeing it again. Txs for sharing
My toddler son watched this about 100 times yesterday and has started the same again today. He won't have any of the other Sesame Street, just this organe, over and over and over....
Holy shit - of all the dozens of Sesame Street bits I remember, how could I have forgotten THIS?! Great to see it again, thanks!
I had forgotten about this clip! I was fascinated by the flower eyelashes as well.
Imagine, exposing pre-schoolers to opera! I feel sorry for kids today and the crap that's foisted upon them.
La-aMOOOOOOR! La-aMOOOOOOOOOOOOR!!
LOL. When I was a kid, I thought that was the funniest thing ever filmed.
I am a singer today partly because of this clip that I saw as a kid. It made me want to sing. All the dressing up backstage, and warming up her voice and belting out with an orchestra. What really stuck with me was the fact that she misses a few notes, loses her face (in embarrassment?) and still manages to gain applause. It was a confidence builder. I really wanted to be a singer when I saw this.
i love this song! this is one of my favorite songs to sing and this is where i learned it from..long...long...ago! =D
Oh my goodness--this really brings back memories! What a great clip!! :o)
I remember watching this when I was like 5-6!
I was terrified of this orange when I was about 2 or 3 years old. The first nightmare I remember was that orange. I used to freeze with fear and my mom would race to the TV and turn it off. My mom passed away about 2 months ago. Thank you for finding and posting this. It just reminds me of what a protective loving person she was.
I've always loved that bit. Great to see it again. Thanks for posting!
I just saw Carmen in Pittsburgh last night. The show was AMAZING!!!
If any of my generation has a love of opera, they undoubtedly owe it to this skit.
Thank you so much for posting this! Besides this being one of my favorite Sesame Street memories, my hubby has never seen this and I've been telling him about it for ages, so now I can finally show him. :)))
Wow. I haven't seen this for 25 years! I always like this clip (I thought it was funny!) Thanks for putting it on here!
I looked for this for YEARS and eventually gave up. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
OMG I haven't seen this in SOOO many years! Thanks so much for posting! :)
Okay. I can die happy now. I have been looking for this clip forever. Like others here, it creeped me out as a kid, and, of course, I've been looking for it ever since to be creeped out again. Thank you so much for posting it!
Wow. There were alot of silly little things that scared me as a child, but the opera orange?!? I loved this skit! Funny how creepy things seem laughable when we (sorta) grow up.
YAYY! I was looking for this months ago and couldn't find it. I'm so glad you posted it!!!
I LOVE this clip. I think it interesting that people either love it or it creeps them out.
Thank you - so great to see this again
THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this!! I've wanted to see this again my whole life!! :)
I have been waiting for this one. thank you.
Ah ah ! And it's in french !
Ah ah, that accent ! So cute. :)
Wow, I haven't seen this since I was a little kid but boy does that bring back memories! Thanks for putting this up here!
This is insanely great...thank you so much!
Awesome ! This was always one of my favorite clips from Sesame Street. I haven't seen it in about 35 years. Cool animation and Moog synthesizer accompanyment too. Thank you for posting it !
I was just thinking about this video recently because I haven't seen it since it was on Sesame St, and my wife have never seen, so I tried to describe it with little success. I'm glad UA-cam is here to bring back fond memories.
Carmen was the 1st opera I saw as a child and it was this clip that sparked my interest in it
Thanks for posting this! This used to scare the bejeezus out of me so much that I would have to run screaming out of the room. Her eyes were FREAKY! She was called The Singing Lady in our family and we still laugh about it. I can't hear that music from Carmen without thinking of THIS! Watching it now it's just weird. It's funny to read that others felt the same way. I feel the need to start an online support group for adults who were childhood victims of this traumatic footage..
I haven't seen this one since I was about 5 years old.
When I was a kid, it kinda creeped me out a bit the way that orange kept repeating LAA-MMMMOOOOOUUUUURRRR!!! a few times 'cause I thought that orange was gonna go crazy or something.
I'm 23 years old and I can't believe I'm seeing this one again 18 years later. Thanks for posting.
I love this! I used to be so so scared of this when I was little.I am now 28 and find it cute! We can all face our fears and conquer them if we try!! :)
i loved this one .... awe... i remember watching this when i was i kid and loving it soo much
Another classic I remember all too well! Where have the years gone? Thank you!
I loved this as a child...still one of my favorite memories, thanks!
Good to know that I'm not the only one who ran away screaming every time this popped on. Now that I see it years later, I don't know why I was so scared of it.
I have LOVED this since I was a kid! haahahaha
I remember watching this as a kid. Thanks for the upload
the animation is great! When I was child I was facinated by this clip! When I watched "Carmen Jones", Dorothy Dandridge sang "Carmen" and I was reminded of this sketch. hee hee!
Wow ... does THIS bring back memories of watching TV after school as a kid! Used to LOVE this clip and it still stands up.
