Hi David Could you tell more about the biology of vitellogenin/ apidaecin on winterbees? I heard that all egg lying animals have yokes with vitellogenin. How does vitellogenesis in an bee-egg work, what are the effects of vitellogenin on virus infections (in bees), is it a myth that warmer winters effect the amount of vitellogenisis in winterbees? Thank you very much for thinking about this topic in advance! Love your channel!
A myth that I have encountered. I was told by an old beekeeper that as long as the bees are bringing in pollen you have a queen. From my experience that is not true.
Hi David I have learned a lot from your videos and really enjoy them. I am in my second season of beekeeping in Southern California and have 5 colonies. Were you keeping bees when you had small children and if so how and when did you find the time to manage your bees? I have 5 kids and it seems like I am running down to my apiary just to take care of the basics. I enjoy your videos when you talk about your family life and some of the struggles you have encountered. Thanks! John
Dribble works for us (52 year beekeeping mentor and me) because the bees in the cluster constantly circulate from outside to inside moving dribble around all bees - plus we wrap our hives so the one broken top cover does get wind proof from the wrap.
Bees have indirectly flymuscles, and they can move the kitin plates in the dorsal and ventral part of the breast. Making the summing without moving the wings
Hello David! I live in Idaho; I got behind schedule and started my mite treatment too late. I used Apivar strips and they won’t be ready to remove until Nov. 9th. Should I take them out a bit early or leave them in the hive over winter?
I’m very glade you never said cold don’t kills bees it may not kill them but it sure stress them out bees are not suppose to cluster clustering is also a stress they don’t cluster in the wild in big thick trees there metabolic rate should go down from co2 gas and they just chill out in a low rate and with a warm insulated hive they don’t have to cluster as tight I open a poly hive in winter and there pretty active and it’s - 10 cold may not kill them but they def don’t like cold there a cold blooded creature 😊
David, what time of the season do you move all the brood from the bottom and move it to the top box or do you leave the brewed on the bottom and all the honey on top Charlie PA waiting for green chair Friday love it
I’m afraid they do but they can sting other insects without losing their sting and not die. Their stinger gets stuck in our skin and pulls out their inners and they die.
Couple days ago I was so scared. I went to my hives and I see dad bees, and I already was thinking that they was like last year killed my hives but when I picked them up, there was all drums throw out from the house then I was happy❤ I’m sorry English is not my first language. I was born in different country.
Hey David ..I have a bit of an emergency. Just found a hive (literally 10 minutes ago) that dwindled to a small cluster with the queen. I have a number of double nucs, one has an empty side. Is it too late to pull a couple of brood frames from a couple of nucs and put them and the queen in the empty side? Do you think two brood frames is enough? I have 8 nucs to pull from. I have plenty of frames of honey/resources to fill in the rest of the empty nuc i'll be using. Configuration is 8 frames 4 over 4. I am just north of Albany, NY. First time something like this has happened to me. Just don't want spin my wheels and lose a couple of frames of brood if this won't work. Help!
@@beek thanks for answering..it's a sticky wicket for sure. I'll give it a try and let you know if it worked. My loss could be another's gain, or heck, it might work!
Go for it! I made my first hive and could have caught a swarm if I waited long enough. Which would of been free. But it is addictive and takes a lot of patience
Why do the bees eat ? ( to have energy to warm the hive to stay alive ) so what can we do to help them keep the hive warmer so they don’t have to work as hard to keep the hives warm if the heat they make would stay with them then they would not have to work as hard so insulate is a big thing
Hello David this is Marshall from England I was looking on Facebook and a clip came on about, some plants can give off a mild static electricity charge that attracts the bees to come to them for nectar. Have you ever heard of this? Would like your thoughts on this.
Yes, I've mentioned and explained that in a video or two. The study was primarily done on bumble bees. The bees can tell if the flower has been recently visited based on the electrical charge or lack thereof.
This video really clarified things for me, thanks!
Thanks so much for sharing knowledge ☺️

"Sue me!" LOL. Hey, thank ya for everything, all the vids and stuff. I think I should take your class during this off season.

Has been true for me over the 5 years of beekeeping.

Bees have memory they do remember us they remember me
Dziękujemy.

You should move or relocate bees on Thursday or Saturday to minimize the chance of swarming.

I like seeing brood on the bottom and honey above because my bees move up into the store honey and warmth during winter.
Spritz spray makes it easier to find the queen - she doesn't tend to run & hide!
Steven W. First time bee keper. Do bees die after they sting?
I’m afraid they do but they can sting other insects without losing their sting and not die. Their stinger gets stuck in our skin and pulls out their inners and they die.
You need a top vent is a big myth in Nova Scotia lol
Bees do attack intruders ,I understand. Wonder why they aren’t able to fight the mites?

Ultra breeze bee jacket!
Thanks
I tried the sugar water spray one time and one time only. I left that stand with at least 10 stingers in me. It’s not for me either David

Sorry to hear that. It's going to be a bit risky for sure. Who knows where it will work or not. Hard to say.

The one i heard was you csn tell when its going to rain as the bees stop flying, well someone should tell my bees as some fly when its raining.
Have you ever heard of someone getting stung a bunch of times and being fine, but waking up at night with anaphylactic shock symptoms?
No but I guess everyone's different.
I am interested in bee keeping but bee keeping is not cheap in our country
Go for it! I made my first hive and could have caught a swarm if I waited long enough. Which would of been free. But it is addictive and takes a lot of patience
I find it stresses bees out smoke when I hit them alote they will start fanning like there making sure there all there and they get very loud
If you move of change bees frames before the first Friday of new moon.. Will hard your bee one way or other.. the will die or swarm.

I lost 2 hives. One is weak. 😢 3 others are still alive but questionable

My neighbor’s have killed my bees by spraying there blueberries several times.
Oh no! So sorry to hear.
chemical free and treatment free are NOT the same!!
