Thanks for this trip down memory lane. I first started reading RCM in 1974 and over the years have accumulated a complete set of issues, from October, 1963 to June, 2005. They had a good run and are missed. Their construction articles and product reviews were the best.

I just found a box full of RC Modeler magazines at my farm house that I had saved and I wondered what I should do with them. After this video, I'm glad I just left them there to look at later.

The evolution of the hobby is fascinating…in the 1970’s I could only dream about what model aircraft can do today…thanks for sharing!

Rick: You got that right. Folks these days have simply no idea how affordable the hobby is. $10 servos from Amazon?? 😳🙀👍🏻 Tim

    Hi Tim,
    Graeme from Sydney, Australia.
I’ve subscribed to your Channel for a long time.
A great informative channel you have.
I subscribed to RCM for about 20 years.
While you were going through the magazine, towards the back, I noticed a very familiar name to me.
It was Winning Model and Hobby Supplies, 2A Austin Avenue, Kowloon, Hong Kong.
In the 70’s and 80’s I bought many OS Engines, JR Radios, Kalt and Hirobo Helicopters and ARF’s from them, as they were becoming popular in the 80’s.
    A trip down memory lane.
Keep up the good work you do on your channel.

I ordered the plans from RCM and scratched built the "Windhover" sailplane from the October '75 issue. I still have that model in the attic. Wow, that was a long time ago. Thanks for bringing back the memories, Tim. 🙂

This brought back allot of memories and a reminder of just how expensive this hobby was back in the day, thank you Tim.

Back about 1960 Dad turned me on to Model Airplane News, and I picked up Model Builder when it came out. In the 60's Dad and I flew control line models, which was all we could afford. R/C was WAY beyond us, price wise. Dad always dreamed of building R/C ... using a "galloping ghost" system and rubber band powered "escapements" for servos, but that was out of reach for us. We built mostly from kits, but I did build a couple from plans I ordered. Mom always yelled about the smell of Testor's or Pactra "dope" and Ambroid glue in the house. I was always stealing her pins to hold balsa to plans. Fox was more than fuel ... they built VERY good motors, as did McCoy and K&B. I built a control line plane, 36 inch wingspan and put a McCoy 19 with an R/C carb on it and controlled engine speed with a 3rd line. I got pretty good with it and wanted to try some "carrier events", landing a control line A/C on a little carrier deck ... but then girls, cars and the Army came along and I put off models until almost 1980.

A trip down memory runway .
Kits were expensive, so I scaled up their plans to the size I wanted .

Thank you for visiting my youth in RC. The Radio system that was the first to call my very own, given by Dad was the complete BlueMax system kit. A fine looking Set, We just recently lined the walls of our AMA clubhouse with Dad's collection of Transmitters of the past including the BlueMax. As I remember, it wasn't a great radio and refused to work after a bit. I know my dad was a great horse trader and there is no way he spent $1400 of the family funds. Dad had me flying cox .02 powered , pulse rudder only balsa and silk covered planes at about age 7. A School Boy kit comes to mind. In college I built an RCM Trainer 60 without seeking assistance. A beautiful kit. I had spent a lot on this, a OS Max 61, a Futaba 6ch FM radio and all the works. Maiden was in my college parking lot on the weekend. It lifted scale like into the air, I rolled left. It rolled right into the concrete. Only the engine and radio were saved, except the muffler broke. It took years to forget that experience, and the introduction of Cheap Frsky telemetry radio systems to entice me back to my favorite hobby. But even this tech wouldn't have brought me back if it were not for the help of Dad and all his flying buddies that had kept the same great AMA club going that they he and a few close friends had started nearly 5 decades prior.
