  • Welcome! I’m bonsai master Dr. Milton Chang! You guys seem to really enjoy when I show my collection of older trees, so today, I’d like to show you one go my oldest and most treasured trees. This California Juniper is 500+ years old! We’re going to repot this together and I will walk you through my process. Repotting benefits the plant because you can remove unhealthy roots to allow new ones to grow, and you can set the plant in a new pot to change up its look in your garden.

    Fantastic video showing repotting a 500 year old tree using his well tried method without all the messing about that we are told we should be doing, I do like his idea about using screening to line the pot to help the tree self prune the roots. Thank you for a no nonsense lesson on repotting trees.

    Proof that there is no universally "correct" way to do Bonsai (soil mix, repotting etc.). Whatever works, works!
    A great video with clear and simple instructions.

    Very good repotting of older tree video. Direct and easy step-by-step how-to repotting it. Another video showing that your Bonsai mix is just fine for our Bonsai. Will try it here in Pacific NW on a few. And yes - I would have sought and used larger perlite. But understand what you used was just fine. Thank you.

    Thanks for the information! I'll try the mosquito netting in the pots when I repot. I usually do have a lot of roots growing round and round, and have to cut a lot of them off. They eventually choke each other if the tree isn't repotted for a few years, hopefully this will help!
    😊

    Doctor Chang. If the Bonsai Tree that Old why is there not much Roots to keep it healthy? Do you collect Your own Yamadori Trees ? Thanks for you Video.

    • @bonsaiheirloom
      @bonsaiheirloom  Рік тому +3

      I collected trees with Harry Hirao (considered the American pioneer in yamadori CA juniper) when I started in the late 70’s. None of the trees I dug survived. Simple following the wrong advice on soil mixture and “keep it on the try side”. Harry’s survival rate was also low, but he went out often.
      These CA juniper are deep rooted because they were in the Mojave desert. And the soil is usually decomposed granite, which is almost gummy. There were very little surface roots. You pray a tree with almost no root will survive.
      I bought a few collected junipers over the years and treasured them, but I do not encouraging digging because it disturbs nature and prevents future generation hikers to enjoy them.
      I advocate for creating bonsai to simulate nature instead. I will do videos to demonstrate Yardori (instead of yama-) in the near future. Being green and creating really beautiful bonsai. Stay tuned and best wishes!

    What if I make a bonsai and I want the trunk to always have that wet look can I use a teak oil or varnish on the dead spots that turn grey

    • @bonsaiheirloom
      @bonsaiheirloom  Рік тому

      You are a creative artist! That’s good! When comes to art, there is NO right or wrong...Just do it. I tend to let nature take its course, to stay natural. On the other hand, you may standout by being different, like polish a portion of the dead trunk to show the grain, or even paint it with bright color to show you are a novel bonsai artist…to create a new style. I advocate going beyond tradition and convention. :)

    Dr. Chang, would your soil mix work in a place like Seattle or Atlanta where it rains a lot? I'm guessing your in California in an area that may not get too much rain.

    • @bonsaiheirloom
      @bonsaiheirloom  Рік тому +1

      Trees love water…and you can never overwater with good drainage. We do rain in winter from November to April and lot. NO problem. During the summer, I drip plus water.
      The concept of over watering is untrue. You can drown your plant…but there are good drainage holes. Enjoy the nurturing of watering!

    The substrate used may or may not work for you. Choice of substrate and percentages of what you use should be tailored for your climate.

    How much root was there in the old soil?

    • @bonsaiheirloom
      @bonsaiheirloom  Рік тому +1

      You can see around the 4:00 mark that there are some small roots left in the old soil. The new pot will allow more room for new roots to grow!

  • @DecaffeinatorZero
    @DecaffeinatorZero Рік тому +2

    Why on earth are you repotting a tree with that weak a root system? Maybe if you weren't using such a bad soil mix that most people moved away from thirty years ago, you'd have a healthy root system to work with
