In my opinion Gundam is an accurate prediction of humanity's future. Our reformation will be achieved by moving into outer space and expanding our understanding of the universe. By being raised in an environment without conflict that that and future generations will truly be able to live in peace. While Earth is humanity's birth place its history is far too diluted with bloodshed to be able to usher in a new era. The traditions and natures of humans born on earth prevent them from reforming.
For anyone curious, this is actually very reminiscent of a song called "But Still..." by Sawano Hiroyuki. If you go to 00:29 of that track and 00:43 of this song, you can see a very stark similarity ;)
