Ok, so you’re not intentionally buying more pens. Sure Marty. Btw our support group meeting is on for tomorrow at 1:00.
LOL. I'll see you there. My name is Marty and I'm a Penoholic.
I really enjoy doing ink wash sketching. It’s my go-to for quick sketching when I don’t necessarily have time to pull out watercolors or even watercolor pencils. I think I also have all these pens in your video, except the Onyx. My favorites are the UniBall Vision Elite and the Pentel Sign pen. I’m a bit heavy handed, so another favorite the UniBall Air which also gives a nice varied line width. Have you ever tried using is the Speedball Elegant Writer? It gives some very nice effects because the line will completely dissolve, and the black ink separates into blue when you add water with a water brush and mauve when you use a tissue to blot areas.
Hi Wendi - I haven't tried the Speedball Elegant Writer, but it sounds like I should. Also, funny you should mention the use of ink washes rather than pulling out the wc's, because almost every really watercolorist I know does a tonal value study either before or for use under the wc painting. Thanks for the tip on the Speedball.
You're back, I've missed your videos
Did Uniball change their ink formula? Based on this video, I purchased both uniball Onyx and Uniball Vision pens on amazon. I noticed they said Super Ink protects against Water / Fading / Fraud, but your results were so good, I tried them anyway. Got them today and both leave only the slightest of grey when waterbrush is applied to ink (even immediately after drawing). I am bummed, I loved the dark color results you had gotten!! Appreciate your junk drawer, those vintage pens cant be replaced!!
More info: Uniball Onyx is now pigment by default but you can order them in the blue and black box that specifically say dye-based in the description (more expensive, I wonder if these are discontinued). The physical markings on the pen itself are identical, so no way to tell from looking at them.
Another update: the paper makes a huge difference. Having decided the uniball wouldn't bleed (tested on wood pulp watercolor), I used them in smooth bristol and they reacted very much to the water .. to the point that I questioned myself and went back and retested on the first paper (still no wash on that paper). Moral of the story: be sure to test on the paper you actually plan to use!!
wow! You did a great job figuring this out. I was going to immediately say to your first post that it might be the paper, but you got there faster than I could. Nice job!!
Beautiful lettering!
Thank you very much!
What were you using for the actual washes? That weird wet pen thing
Was at my local art supply place recently, and they had a brush pen that had a relatively large chamber specifically for water, which I thought I should try -- I'm assuming it's something like that?
Yep, I use a Pentel water brush.
Wow! Never tried this! Are you using only water to create the shades??? Thanks 🙌
Yes, only water. It's great for learning tonal values.
I love regular pens for ink and wash. My current favorites are Pentel Slicci (super fine) 0.25 and the Pilot V5 Hi tecpoint o.5
Hey Marty, thanks for the video. Like the pen review, I have a bunch of pens too more coloured pens than black pens. What coloured pens set do you have?
Hiya Dawn - I have a colored set that is Pilot, which I love, but otherwise just a few one-offs here and there.
I love doing line and wash with "ordinary" pens! I first learned the technique from Kath Macauley's video on "pocket sketching." One thing to watch out for is the paper you use - I tend to stick with her recommendation of the Strathmore 400 drawing paper and the original Pilot Razor Point in black. It's the best combination I've found if you want the ink to be capable of dissolving completely when you hit it with water. Thank you for this review! It's been a while since I did any experimenting; I'm going to try some of these pens.
Hi Karen - Glad you mentioned paper, as that can make a huge difference. I like the Strathmore or just about anything with 100% cotton rag. I'll have to try out the Pilot Razor point, sounds like you like it a lot. Have a great weekend.
Pilot Precise V5 & V7 pens are waterproof if you let them dry for 24 hours before painting over with watercolor.
Thank you!
thanks Marty you have saved me. How you say, the next time my husband says I have too many art supplies i am showing him this video. They just sneak up on us, the pen buggars, paint, paper, and the list goes on and on. Brenda Swenson made a video once where she tested her bottles of ink in the sunlight like people do paint. Her results were interesting. I am missing a washing machine, car wash, driving over video from you. I still laugh. Take care as we all get ready for colder weather.
Hi Essie - I got a good chuckle from the first part of your post. I'll have to try the ink in sunlight thing you are mentioning - Do you know what paper she used? I love abusing paper. :-) Hope you are doing great - Have an awesome weekend Essie.
@@owingsart I dont remember but maybe I can find the video. Hope you all have a good weekend too. For now I am going to work more with gouache here. Patrick Ley Greaves has posted a new video and he is now working with the water soluble oils. Guess we all are trying news things.
Most students in my city write like kinder kids. I wish that public schools would go back to the basics. Your handwriting is beautiful. Parents don't seem to care.
I really like my TWSBI Eco EF nib. It's filled with Noodlers black American Eel. When dry, it is water resistant; but, it doesn't dry as fast as some of my other fountain pen inks. For an ink wash, I really like Monteverde Capri Blue ink. It is one of the prettiest blue inks that I have seen in a long time. It's not water-resistant when dry.
I like what you demonstrated and I love your penmanship.
Your cursive handwriting is very good, in my opinion!
Nice video. Too many choices!
That's the Aquash being used as a wash?
