  • OK guys! Here it is, my first video of a two part series, of my '22 summertime vacation up on the West Branch. A lot of big boys and many decent 'teeners on film, but had to cut out even more of the smaller fish from 7-10". I hope you get inspired to tryout the Upper Delaware system, it's truly one of the best, if not THE best wild trout fishery on the East Coast.

    Scott, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed watching this! I will especially appreciate watching you and Old Dominion fishing after 9-23. It will be a while before I can fish again after that. I will fish vicariously through you fellas. Thanks for your efforts in putting this video on youtube. It is great.

      Hi buddy! Very happy to hear you’re enjoying the videos. Sorry you won’t be out on the water for a while, wish you well for whatever’s going on. And yes, plenty of videos to go through in the meantime. No actual plans made yet for Cory and I to get together but I’m sure a collaboration will come in the near future. Take care and stay tune for part 2. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

      My singing!!?? Ha! There’s a few that may hold the opposite opinion 😅. That’s good, Shawn and his dad are top notch. Hope the wiggle nymphs do well for you. When I use them I now put them at my last bottom fly position because I feel it gives them more freedom to wiggle and get less tangled. Good luck 👍🏻. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

    Hey Scott, another Gem!
    I've been watching you now for several years since I discovered your site.
    I don't think I have heard you so excited and vocal with your hook-ups
    And for good reason!! You got into some awesome fish while covering a bit of water.
    Thank you again and again for what you provide to those of us living vicariously thru your times on the water.

    One of my favorites in your library of videos on the upper Delaware.
    Catching multiple trophy sized wild brownies in one particular spot on the same bug is about the most fun any fly angler could experience. I too have been fortunate enough to experience days like this as well, and i can honestly that in many cases this is what drives our passion to suit up and hit the water.✝️💙

      Well said Michael! Those magical days or should I say moments, are special and rare. Actually had one the other day on a local stream, just happen to time it perfectly. BWOs we’re coming off, picked up a bunch on a blue perdigon , then when the top water action started, picked off another bunch on top. Days you dream of. Thanks again for watching and commenting.

    Nice Vacation Scott!!! Perfect conditions with cold water. While the rest of the Northeast deals with this heat and no rain, it’s nice to see the West Branch continues to be the premier fly fishing destination for us all. Well done, but I still can’t get the hang of that cutthroat leader. I keep reverting back to the mono rig from Dominick the Troutbitten Man👍Fish on!

    • @pawoodsnwater7551
      @pawoodsnwater7551  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Warren! Thank you very much. That’s ok, whatever system you prefer, just try to master it, they all work, some have their pros and cons over each other. For the Delaware system, the limit with the all mono rig is distance casting and drifting, which on the Delaware is pretty much a necessity, but as always, fish as best as you can within your limits. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

      Anthony! What up!? Well, the first three days of my trip, flows were still super low, then the last three days flows went to over 600cfs Sunday, over 900 Monday, then over 1100 Tuesday and Wednesday, which made it tough to wade, but the fish were on the bite. Higher water sometimes a good thing, especially up on the WB. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Scott! I was wondering when your video would post! I saw Downstream Downrange post a few days ago! I was so rooting for you with the Big Brown you lost and I believe it was 24" plus, but then you find a Honey offshoot off the main river and catch 4 or 5 Big Beauties! I enjoyed every second of this one and will be out to the West Branch 2nd week of October. Hope to see you there and your welcome to have fellowship and a meal with us if you're available. I leave next Saturday for the North Carolina side of the "Smokies" on vacation on 'class A" trout water! Have you ever fished down there? I Hope you and Cory hooked up while down there. Again, a wonderful video and looking forward to Part 2! Well Done and tight lines as always.

    Another great one Scott! Quality fish one after another, gotta love those Catskill trout! Man these Delaware fish fight hard for their size ! Hard to find good flows right now, but that water looked pretty good! You said in the beginning of the video that Delaware fishing ain’t easy, and boy could I attest to that ! Your years of working the river and finally finding its secrets are rewarding you right now! Guys come up here and think they’re going to slay them , and find out differently! I still have alot to learn, so that’s why I keep coming back ! Again great job getting into some real nice fish! Tight lines buddy

The Upper Delaware is a whole different ballgame with it’s size, the water , the bugs and very smart fish. Awesome video! I just started out on the WB a month ago and have been out twice since then. Netted a few nice browns! So satisfying and they fight so hard. It’s such a technical fishery, I’m honestly surprised how many you get even with a somewhat upstream cast. This doesn’t seem to spook em! I’ve only had success with a quartered downstream or straight out w/ a big upstream roll to it. Which can sometimes limit the duration of my drift. Anyway, hats off.

    • @pawoodsnwater7551
      @pawoodsnwater7551  2 роки тому +1

      Hi bud! It’s great you’re having success already and some decent brownies too! 👍🏻yes, you noticed that I do cast way upstream, I don’t like getting too close to the fish and casting from downstream behind them works fairly well for me. Now there are plenty of times when I do catch a bunch of fish on the last part of my drift on the swing and even the hang, but I haven’t found what the reason for that on different days, could be because of some bug activity in the water and the fish taking the fly as an emerger. So, often, my drifts are much longer than a typical nymphing drift and I’m constantly managing my slack line and drag. Guess, like that old saying, the longer my line is in the water, the better the chance I’ll catch a fish, ha! Gotta love the fight of a big big Delaware trout, what keeps us going back. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    What would you say is a wadeable flow in Deposit

    • @pawoodsnwater7551
      @pawoodsnwater7551  Рік тому

      Hey James! Glad you’re enjoying the videos 👍🏻. For the Deposit area, I still use the usgs gage at Hale Eddy, 900cfs or lower is good, 500cfs I think is ideal for wading, and from 900-1200 is still fishable but you gotta know the better shallow areas to target fish and wade. Multiple trips to explore all around really pays off when picking areas to fish depending on the flows. There’s are some good shallow areas even down in the Hancock area that fish well with higher flows. Tight Lines and have fun!

Lately, I’ve switched over to the Cutthroat 50” dry fly Shorty Leader, it’s made a little lighter in weight and still works excellent for nymphing and dry fly fishing. I still have a couple 50” nymphing furled leaders on my nymph specific rod setups, but on my couple rods that I do both, they’re the ones I switched over. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Also check out Wild Blue Discovery’s channel, scroll through his videos, he has many from that area. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Hi Scott! Tom Here.
    Always great video /info. Where do you place your split shot? and how much distance between each fly? Still 4x for nymphing?
    Don't know if this works in high water but just to watch you fish. Best Regards.Thanks

      Hi Tom! I build my tandem rig from heaviest fly up top down to my lightest fly on the bottom, flies are around 14-16” apart, I usually use 4x Flouro but this trip I was using 5x but then switched back to 4x, those big boys were controlling me too much. Thanks for watching and commenting and all your support.

    Another great video Scott. Newbie here. Not sure if you mentioned it in the vid but, what kind of fly line are you using? Manufacturer, type, leader please? Thanks.

    • @pawoodsnwater7551

      Hi buddy! Thank you very much. Now, I’m more traditional with my fly fishing, so here’s my setup: I normally use a standard weight forward floating line size matched to the rod, the I use a 50” Cutthroat Furled Leader, off of it’s tippet ring I add 5ft of 4x Flouro, then I’ll start my tandem rig or if I’m fishing dries I’ll add another 3ft of 5x or 6x. Honestly, it really doesn’t matter what brand of fly line, they’re all pretty comparable but I’d choose a moderately priced line, say $70-$80. Hope this helps. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

      Hello Joe! Well, my Globugs are a size 16 caddis bend, my big Isonychias are a size 12-3xl or size 14-3xl, nymphs are mostly size 18, occasionally size 16s, dry flies are all different sizes, usually match whatever’s on the water at the time. Hope that helps. Good luck and fish EVERYWHERE! Thanks for watching and commenting.

      Hello Arthur! I usually throw upstream than most guys, while managing my slack line, I lead my rig down thru the drift, while keeping a straight line, not a tight line, my leader usually enters the water at around a 45 degree angle, I focus on the belly of my line, anything that indicates a hit I set the hook. For a better example, please watch my video, Nymphing Strategies Part 3, there I go into my technique in detail. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Scott great video once again. I have been unable to fish this summer on the WB due to medical conditions. We do fish many of the same areas. Question, do walk across the 191 bridge to access the south side of the river?

    • @pawoodsnwater7551
      @pawoodsnwater7551  2 роки тому

      Hi Joe! Honestly, you can access it from both sides, all depends on water flow or other fishermen. I really don’t have a favorite side, you just gotta fish what you’re presented with. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      Hi John! Hmmm, at 1:08 thought I was talking then in my den. But the only two bridges were the 191 bridges in Hancock and the Hale Eddy bridge, both very very popular areas. What size and color was the pheasant tail you were using and were you using a bead head type??
    And at ~45:43 you mentioned the fish caught on a "frenchy" - could you describe what that is?

    • @pawoodsnwater7551
      @pawoodsnwater7551  2 роки тому

      Hi Thomas! Well, as far as the pheasantail, I was using two styles, but interesting thing is, the new one I was trying actually outfished the old one. The older pattern is my hotspot pheasantail with just two micro Lively Legz and an Ice Dub pink shrimp thorax under the wingcase, size 18, the new pattern is a gold beadhead pheasantail with a flashback wingcase and no legs, just a thicker peacock herl thorax and a drop of clear UV on top of the wingcase and the top of the bead. As far as the Frenchie, please just Google Frenchie fly pattern, there’s so many variations to it, my hotspot collar behind the gold bead is a thin flashy UV chartreuse collar. Mostly tye that in sizes 14-16. Hope this helps. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
