  • Folk music was to most white kids what soul and blues were to most black kids. As I said in my video post last week, folk is the music I remember 'first' as a tiny kid. And for boomers, it was the music we sang around the campfire. So for this Folk Song Friday on Thursdays, I chose our pilot for our series taped in 1964. The cousins, who Vonnie called 'the kissin' cousins' (yikes! they dropped that real fast!) sang a medley of folk tunes.
I asked my brother Ric what he remembered about these songs; how did they come to sing them, etc. He said they were inspired by the likes of 'Peter, Paul, and Mary', 'The Limelighters', and 'The Roof Top Singers'. The following are his words: Liza and I were singing and playing guitars at various little things even before the King Family. I also sang in a little folk group with kids from high school and we rehearsed and played at the old bowling alley on Ventura Blvd where they had pin spotters way after everybody else went electric. We also played 1 or 2 nights at Disneyland. We called ourselves 'The Do - Stuffers'!
Since this was our pilot, our wardrobe budget was tiny. You can see the girls just had pleated skirts with matching turtle necks and knee socks! (really? knee socks?) Mr. Mackie was not involved in this yet. This was performed live. No prerecord. When we were on the road I remember falling to sleep on our tour bus listening to the 'big kids' sing all these great songs as we traveled across the country on our way to meeting many of you.
PS - The middle song in this medley we call "Line The Track". We call Ric the god of the internet in our family. He has never found ANYTHING online for the song - who wrote it, who recorded it etc. So if any of you trivia buffs out there can solve this, there'll be a King Family Corona Mask as a gift to you! (not really but one of you guys did make me a Snoopy and a Ninja Turtle mask and, are in the process of making a King Fam one!)

So nice to hear Liza, Candy and Rob sing. The Apple did not fall from the tree for the Butler boys. Don has such a great sense of humor.

Wow! This was absolutely great! ...Thanks, Cam Clarke, for throwing this out! ...Just don't ever see that kind of sing-a-long with a family anymore much less anyone else.

I'll look for info on the song "Line The Track"....I'm a former member of 2 performing/singing groups, 1 group sacred and the other soft pop rock and folk, and we use to consider all types of music, some was folk style. I'll chat some old friends and bounce the song off them. Sorry I cannot specifically recall this song in the tons of sheet music we use to hunt through. I hope I can find something. Just wait...and who knows?!
