  • Warning: This video contains scenes of injury and pain that might make viewers feel a little queasy.
In this landscape photography video we start by photographing an unusual sandstorm in Iceland, which was a challenge due to the high winds, but great fun. We then set up our campsite which is where Greg breaks his finger and yes, I do show the entire scene. It's discusting. Finally we venture out insearch of compositions for an amazing display of lenticular clouds. I hope you enjoy this video.

Planning a trip to Iceland (I've not managed to go yet - it's only been well over a decade 😂 ), is what initially inspired me to get into photography. I'd always loved "taking pictures", but I wanted to do more than that. I'll admit, the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights was at the center of it - even though I know they are not guaranteed. I knew I needed a "real" camera to capture them, and that I would need to actually know how to use it. I got my first DSLR (entry level T3 - it serves it's purpose though 😊), Feb 2018. Having that camera is what led me to Thomas' channel, which in turn led me to yours, Nick, and Morten Hilmer, Simon Baxter, Gavin, Adam and so many more. Since then, I've been inspired to get back out into nature - sometimes I get a decent shot, a lot of times I don't lol. It doesn't matter though. It's just nice to be out there. Seeing videos like this one, and the many I've watched from all of you, help to remind me why I got started on this journey in the first place... where I want to be, and inspire me to continually work on my craft. I hope to get to Iceland someday - not just for the aurora, but for all the beauty it has to offer. I know this was a bit of a ramble. I'm sorry. I just hope you guys understand how much you inspire random folks like me. Thank you!

Lenticular clouds are a favourite of time lapsers, for good reason. The way they stay in place while the water droplets move in and out of them is beautiful. You're so lucky! As for Greg's finger... oh boy. As a musician I can report that that was like a slasher movie. My quality of life depends on all my fingers remaining intact, because without my piano skills I'd have no therapy. Playing keeps me sane...

Now you see, despite the fact that the lovely Mrs G asserts that just about every image on the 2019 calendar is “too dark”, I actually quite like it. But it’s more than my life is worse to admit that to her. Should I buy a 2020 calendar I will of course keep it in entirely to myself. Now I really enjoyed this video, as I enjoy most of your videos. But perhaps your popularity has made it something of a guilty pleasure! But I do understand how much effort goes into making these videos and I sincerely thank you for them. They entertain and inform, and it’s reasonable to assert that you have spawned an entire industry of UA-cam landscape photography vloggers. Thank you so much. Oh, and the next time you’re doing one of your “let’s read out some comments“ please, for God sake, don’t read this one.😊👍🏻

The timelapse showing the cloud structure stay almost perfectly still is something else... I've seen clouds stay put over mountains, but never out in the open like that. Especially here around the Great Lakes where they just float through with no obstacles in the flat terrain. Also, I personally prefer the wider shot with the full mountain in it 'cause I'm a sucker for how it shows the clouds seemingly grabbing the peak, though I can see how you prefer the 57mm shot for the video as it's definitely more balanced against the amazing lenticular formations on the left.

Thomas, have you ever tried a telephoto lens brace/support to lessen vibration or movement from wind? It's basically a bar that attaches to the tripod that has two support arms, one for the camera body and one for near the front of the long tele. Those kind of windy conditions might be perfect to test one of the big heavy Gitzo tripods. Not the carbon fiber but the older but much steadier metal ones.
Here's a good tripod test for you. Mount a laser pointer on the hot shoe of your camera and attach the camera to your favorite tripod. Turn on the laser and point it at the wall about 8-10 feet away. Now tap the leg of the tripod with something like a hammer or handle of a big screwdriver and see how much the laser bean wobbles. I did this test years ago when I managed a camera store only I tested about 3 dozen tripods from smaller travel tripods to the largest. The winner was the biggest, heaviest, Gitzo which was so stable that you couldn't perceive any movement of the laser beam from 10' away. Unfortunately the only way to get one of those is to find a used one.
