We have not seen Sir Manekshaw in action. Such war movies spreading a kind of awareness in laymen public so that they get a kind of orientation about our army process and discipline. Any actor or actress in our country would giving 100 percent to portray the image of the person on whom the biopic is made. It will definitely inspire some young people to get enroll in Indian Army
"Respect the Old man in the profession where men die young." Just reading about the man gives you goosebumps. 1) His biographer has told that Sam Manekshaw's parents were going to Lahore by train many years before partition and in those days train journey was very long so by the time they reached Amritsar, Sam's mother was almost in labour and eventually they settled there only and dropped plans of going to Lahore, as they liked Amritsar. So years later after 1971 war someone asked Sam Bahadur that "What would have been the result of the war if your parents had completed that journey before partition and you had been born in Pakistan ?" To which he replied in a microsecond "I believe Pakistan would have won then" This was the Level of Extreme Self - confidence he had with a combination of upbringing, hardwork, discipline, and other factors. 2) A member of the first batch of cadets of the Indian Military Academy (called "The Pioneers"), he was serving in the British Indian army from mid 1930s onwards. During WW2, he displayed unparalleled act of bravery and leadership, fulfilled his given mission and took 7 BULLETS in lung, liver, kidney, intestine. In those days the the MC (MILITARY CROSS) was not given to dead soldiers, however gallant their sacrifice. So seeing Manekshaw's bravery and the fact that he might die, his British general took off his own MC ribbon and pinned it to Sam Bahadur's uniform right there on the battlefield. Although later Manekshaw survived (to the Australian surgeon's surprise too), and the official news was published in the London Gazette and he received his own proper MC. 3) Only twice has the rank of Field Marshal been awarded by Govt. Of India since independence. One was to General Kariappa but his award was many years after retirement and as an honour for his services to the nation. Second was Sam Manekshaw and the only person in Indian History to receive this rank on duty (before retiring). He made rules of conduct and led by example, gave strict punishments to his subordinates to maintain discipline. Even the Pakistani prisoners of war appreciated him for visiting them and treating them nicely in camps. He delivered lectures in leadership and Battles all over the world. 4) Post retirement he was offered all kinds of Cushy postings by the Indian Govt. like Diplomat, Ambassador, Indian representative in various embassies and International forums. But he believed an army general must not take any incentive from the govt. in his life and in return the Govt. must not tell him how to run his army and manage his soldiers. Staying true to that he refused all the postings and lived a quiet retired life, gave lectures and motivated youngsters and future soldiers.
Leave alone any post, even his pension was not decided and paid for 26 years after his retirement. Some facts of the past is just shocking but true. But why a war hero, first Field Marshall of India, Who bought glorious victory to India in 1971 war was ill treated after retirement. Indira Gandhi used that victory for her international fame, but ill treated the main person who achieved it. Why she has done it. It is the same ego problem associated with Gandhi-Nehru family. He is independent in nature which she did not like. He also told Indira Gandhi in a blunt manner that he , as general will decide when to begin war and when to end it. After Bangladesh war he became very popular among masses. It irritated and troubled Indira Gandhi. {Indira Gandhi was always apprehensive of Manekshaw. As a person she was deeply insecure. One day - so goes the story - Manekshaw was summoned by the Prime Minister to her office in Parliament House. When he entered, he found Indira Gandhi in very low spirits. She was sitting at her table, with her head in her hands. On being asked what was troubling her, she replied that she had problems. He asked her what the problem was and was surprised when she told him that he was the problem. When Manekshaw asked her to elaborate, the Prime Minister said that she had heard that he was going to take over. Sam was shocked. He assured her that he did not harbor any political ambition. He knew more than anyone else that military coups had not succeeded in the long run in any country in the world. India was, he firmly believed, a democratic country and would always remain so. He was quite happy commanding the Indian Army, and as long as he was allowed to do that, she could run the country the way she wanted. Indira Gandhi seemed to be relieved and, it is said, thanked him profusely. But Indira&’s aides were always ready to see in the irrepressible Field Marshal a threat largely because of his unabated popularity. The Prime Minister soon found a chance to cut him to size. A young lady reporter asked him for an interview and he agreed. She came to his house and during their conversation, Manekshaw mentioned that during Partition he had been asked to opt for Pakistan, but he had chosen to remain in India. When the reporter asked him what would have happened if he had opted for Pakistan, and been commanding the Pakistani Army instead of the Indian, he replied, “they would have won”. Soon afterwards, he had to go to UK and while he was there, there was a question in Parliament based on the report which gave undue prominence to his remark. The Prime Minister was in the House but chose to remain silent. Manekshaw was branded an egotist, and soon became persona non grata. After her triumphal return from the Shimla Conference, Indira Gandhi, in a meeting with Manekshaw apprised him with the terms of the agreement with Bhutto. The irrepressible Manekshaw told her: “He (Bhutto) has made a monkey of you.” And that was the last nail in the coffin of the Field Marshal- Prime Minister equation. Though the Government could not take away his rank, it did take away everything else and treated him shabbily indeed. He retired in January 1973. Field Marshals get full pay and allowances till death. Manekshaw never got even the pension of the rank he held nor a house or a car after retirement. It took the Government of India 36 years to decide his scale and entitlement. When he was in Coonoor Military Hospital in June 2007 suffering from complications of pneumonia, a babu called on him in the hospital to hand over a cheque of Rs 1.60 crore towards arrears of his entitlement. A few days later - on 27 June 2007, he passed away. None of the VVIPs of Delhi was present at his funeral.}(1) That is how the governments under Gandh-Nehru family treats Army personnel. Let the army be given its independence to guard our country. Then only our country will be safe
