Hathras Stampede: Six Officials Suspended ; SIT Recommends In-Depth Investigation

Hathras Stampede: The Uttar Pradesh government has suspended six officials following a stampede at a religious event in Hathras on July 2, which resulted in numerous casualties. This decision comes after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) submitted its report on the incident. The SIT's findings hold the event organizers primarily responsible and suggest a possible conspiracy, as hinted by UP CM Yogi Adityanath. The report criticizes the lack of seriousness by officials towards the event, noting that senior officials were not informed. In light of these findings, the SIT has recommended a thorough investigation. Advocate Vishal Tiwari, addressing the incident, mentioned that a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court demanding the formation of an expert panel led by a retired Supreme Court Judge to investigate the matter and establish guidelines. The Supreme Court has agreed to list the matter for hearing soon.
