Original Lyrics:
Early each day to the steps of Saint Paul's
The little old bird woman comes
In her own special way to the people she call,
"Come, buy my bags full of crumbs;
Come feed the little birds,
Show them you care
And you'll be glad if you do
Their young ones are hungry
Their nests are so bare
All it takes is tuppence from you
Feed the birds, tuppence a bag
Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag
Feed the birds," that's what she cries
While overhead, her birds fill the skies
All around the cathedral the saints and apostles
Look down as she sells her wares
Although you can't see it,
You know they are smiling
Each time someone shows that he cares
Though her words are simple and few
Listen, listen, she's calling to you
"Feed the birds, tuppence a bag
Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag"

When I was a kid I always thought this song was about feeding the birds, now as an adult, I realize that it’s more metaphorical. The writers meant for it to be about being charitable and humane, whether that means giving a little of yourself to others or helping an innocent animal or person when they’re in need. Such powerful lyrics and melody!! The best Disney song ever in my opinion!
Excellent analysis of the song!
And although this song was sung to the children by Mary Poppins, Mr. Banks was the one that ultimately learned the lesson and had the biggest life changing moment.
I think I recall Walt Disney stating that this was his favorite Disney movie song. I agree with both of you, and I'll add that not only are the lyrics poignant, but the music itself (melody, chord progression, dynamics) is amazingly powerful.
I love how Mary Poppins manages to combine a heart-warming story with a deeper meaning and a lesson for old and young alike. In the end, Mary Poppins is not about Mr. Banks, representing all of us, who have lost the joy and light-heartedness of our youth, reminding us how important it is to keep the child in us alive and spread joy and happiness in a world that has become emotionally cold :)
Amen
I didn't realize what this song was about until I heard it today. Yes, showing mercy and while it costs something, it doesn't cost much.
I can't possibly listen to this song without crying.
Jerome Moody I'm actually tearing up
me too !!!
Jerome Moody yes, i'm crying like a child
Curse you onions! 2:18
Mine too.
I cried then
I cried now
_And I'll forever cry when I hear this song._
Same
As a 73 year old man, I cry whenever I hear this song. Why ? RIP Richard.
Rest in Peace Richard M. Sherman (6/12/1928 - 5/25/2024) 🍞 🕊️ 🪙 💼
Now you’re finally reunited with your brother & music partner, Robert and your friend, Walt Disney.
Walt's favourite song indeed so much so he asked the Sherman brothers to perform it for him at their concluding meeting each Friday long after they were all working on new projects. On first hearing them play it for his approval he told the brothers "That's what it's all about, isn't it?" So recalled Richard Sherman in a 2004 interview. Sherman called the song "a prayer for understanding - be kind, give love. It doesn't cost anything".
It's probably the best rendition I've heard since the original
Agreed.
You should listen to Elizabeth South's version. It's absolutely amazing!
@@KevboKev Thank you so much for recommending it to me, I just listened to it and it was absolutely breathtakingly beautiful! Best I've heard since Julie's version
@@princepeterwolf Awesome! After replying to an 8-year-old comment, I wasn't sure you'd even get my reply. :-) Glad you enjoyed it.
Yeah no one will ever fully beat the original
is anyone else tearing up at the sight of the older people tearing up?
+Asukers I couldn't help but cry also firstly because this song has that effect on me, and secondly those older people. Gahh. :'(
+Asukers yes...I am
+Asukers me...
Yep, that's when the water works came about - not to mention the words to this song...
Asukers this song makes me cry anyway
The bird lady in Mary Poppins was a veteran actress called Jane Darwell. Aged 84 at the time. She had been involved with over 100 movies in her career, won an oscar as 'best supporting actress' and even received a star on Hollywood boulevard.
She died in 1967 at the age of 87.
Every time I hear this song I can't help but think about her and feel sad. I also hope she finds it funny that after all of her years of hard work, she'll always be remembered as the bird lady.
I think it was also her last role before she died
That'd be here legacy to our generation, Mate... 🥲🥲🥲
Adding on to this: she was Ma Joad in “The Grapes of Wrath”, acting alongside Henry Fonda. Darwell was basically in retirement at the time, living in an old folks home for actors/actresses in California. Walt Disney personally came to visit her, to offer her the role of the Bird Woman. She initially declined but eventually accepted. It was her final film role. She had been a film actress since 1914.
(This was also Walt Disney’s favorite song.)
You know why those people are crying, is because they remember seeing the original Mary Poppins when it first came out with their families!!! It was such a beautiful movie and it filled their childhood with happy memories so many years ago. Such a beautiful performance and such a wonderful singing voice. You can hear the passion and love of the lyrics in the voice!!!
Why do I get teary eyed every time I hear this? One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Because it’s true. Our greed is disgusting.
Because the song asks us to do one simple thing which is so easy yet so commonly overlooked and not done enough and that is to simply be kind, to show just a little more love. We know it. But we just don't all do it enough.
It's so simple, it may be in fact something so small... tuppence... yet something as small as a smile, a quick "are you okay?", a pat on the back or just being there for someone even if you don't know what to say... it's about the smallest things we can do for other people... that tuppence we afford for others can go a long way and change the world and lives for the better.
Well said Samuel.
I could not stop humming this song when I went to the bank of England from the cathedral.
I did that too,i was also hoping to see a bird woman on the steps if st.pauls
I am not sure what made me tear up more~ Mirusia's absolutely beautiful rendition of one of my most favorite Disney songs ever, or the lady with the red jacket who was in tears right from the beginning. Either way, I am a wreck.
Julie Andrews-nak is tetszene, az biztos...
I though was a man with the red one
Her voice is fairly lovely, but wow her breathing is terrible. The gasping really ruins the song.
@@nataliedejagermusic6923 The mic is fixed and right at the corner of her mouth. She can't put it down to breathe.
The bridge of this song (1:52) has always stirred a very profound feeling in me, even as a kid. The Sherman Brothers penned a modern masterpiece with this song.
I am 64 and this song is brilliant so many memories.
All my working days in the great City of London for 34 years from 1981. All those years took me daily from Cannon Street to Holborn. My morning walk took me through St Pauls Churchyard and around the side of the cathedral where the steps are where in Mary Poppins the old Edwardian lady sold her crumbs for 2d. Every time I passed those steps I thought of her and sang to myself - Feed the Birds. 😍
A beautiful interpretation of this song. Takes me straight to St.Paul's Cathedral in London, and the vision of an elderly Edwardian lady selflessly feeding the hungry birds.
She was selling bags of crumbs to passers-by to feed the birds (tuppence a bag) - she was a street vendor, like match sellers in later times. Begging was illegal but selling small items wasn't, so people could give her money and she avoided prosecution for vagrancy. The song is about charity to those in need not about birds.
Chris Norton I think the magic of Disney, is you can interpret these songs in any which way you choose. Their isn't a rule book of what the songs are about. They are about whatever you choose them to be about. Isn't the imagination a great thing?
Except that the song was clearly written with the scene in mind. Disney songs are, if anything, the type of songs LEAST open to interpretation as to what they're about. It is more accurate to say that Disney songs can be _reimagined_ in almost any way you choose. The intended meaning remains; the way you try to apply it can change.
Chris Norton the line "their young ones are hungry their nests are so bare" I do believe it's about the poor and destitute in London as well, not just London but world wide to be fair..
I cry every time I hear this song! I'm not alone!
LOVE this song, but nobody...NOBODY...Will ever sing it as BRILLIANTLY and BEAUTIFULLY as Julie Andrews!!!
Dukonious I know .....tcb
Dukonious this one wasnt bad too
Actually Julie Andrews never sang this in the movie. This was done by the Bird Lady.
True

My mom loved this song. She always teared up when this scene played. She passed away last year and now here I sit crying and missing her
I am sorry for your loss and hope you are ok! ❤ music can be very powerful and I hope listening to this helps you to remind beside missing your mother
I used yo sing this to my two oldest kids. And just now I got to sing this to my new granddaughter
Sherman brothers were great song writers

They are simply amazing, Disney sure lucked out by getting them to work for him. We all lucked out.
I didn’t know the writer. Thank you.
So true! 🥰😍
This lovely singer causes everyone to tear up...so gifted. Her singing could be therapuetic
Eternal memory to the great composer! His unique masterpieces of music will forever remain in our hearts...
When I was a child I thought it was just about birds but this song means so much more
Mirusia has the voice of an angel
It warms the cockles of my heart watching the audience's reaction to this song.
I've always enjoyed this song.
Thanks for the amazing songs that helped shape our childhoods Richard Sherman. RIP
Hauntingly beautiful. Chills. How did she not get a standing ovation?!
I always cry at this scene from the great Disney film. Along with Bambi realizing his mother is gone. Argh. Wiping tears from my eyes. Forever.
Great song way back in 1964 all those years ago and still gets people crying when this song is sung. Can't beat the words to this song. Still sounds great even after all this time! Certainly gets my vote. Lovely!!
I think there are 5 perfect songs written in the course of human history....this is one of them.
Mirusia as Mary Poppins. She does it honours, feed the birds song.
If only uncle Walt Disney could listen to this 😩❤️❤️❤️❤️
Jason Vongthongkham he is listening this...like my father say, when some one die that person will fly in the skies like the beautiful birds, thats because we have to feed them and protect them
That was his favorite song.
And my beloved deseased mum and dad too

What could be more beautiful than music that is strong enough to fill your heart and flood your eyes with tears. Truly a masterpiece. Hope to witness this piece live someday.
This song gives me chills.
This is a great tribute to Richard Sherman (RIP). Thank you Ms. Sherman. Thank you Mr. Rieu.
she is an angel.. ...
Eugenie Song I'm agree. I love Mirusia, she is my favorite singer 😀😀❤❤❤
What a wonderful song as I feed the birds that come into my garden. I am so pleased I can as a bag is not
as cheap as tuppence now. In return, I have the pleasure of watching them along their way.
What a voice what a music! It’s the voice of heaven.
I have listened twice again, and nobody has ever sung the song like Marusia. This performance is astounding, and it is live! What an incredible talent!
I would like to see this in the Cathedral of Saint Paul
I luv Sean Paul. Girl you got da right temperature
Ugh. Sean Paul is horrible-sounding and doesn't know how to make good music.
The Cathedral is beautiful! Wonderful! I visited!
Omg. This is so beautiful. I always loved Mary Poppins
Andre Rieu, you truly are a legend, you make everything sound epic.
Thank you
Mirusia, What A Heaven Sent Voice. Love This Song Composed By Richard And Robert Sherman🎵
I so love this song from Mary Poppins. I have so much pleasure in life being able to feed the birds that come in to my garden and on bird stand. This classical rendition of the song is well, no other words "Magical"
Beautiful on so many levels - happy childhood memories, beautiful music, beautiful performance by beautiful people. The tears of joy in the audience are the sum of these factors. Bravo! Rieu and co, you hit the spot every time
I was nine years old when my grandfather took me to see Mary Poppins. Oh, how I cried.
Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.
Thanks for sharing my friend Javier...
Lump in throat time - this song is very emotional
Really beautiful song . And the voice of the singer. 10+ . Thank you very much this song. Hello from Finland 🇫🇮
Simply stunning and taking me back to my youth. Beautiful.
December 2018 I am watching again. One word Wonderful.
This song is about loving our children by raising them and spending time with them. The whole movie is about this. Career and womens rights are all nothing when turning your back on your kids.
In the film it is the FATHER who turnes his back on his children and has something to learn.
Gets my vote. Simply beautiful and beautifully simple.
BEAUTIFULLY performed! Excellent voice and exceptional orchestral arrangement!!!!
Anyone who doesn't love this is cold and heartless.
so true
I don't exactly love it, but it do like it a lot. Guess i'm cold and heartless.
Rob Tro I love it but I don't understand the text because I'm german, can someone say me what it means?
maybe you're luke warm to tepid !!! (whichever one is warmer) Not so bad !! And I gotta' assume you've got a beating heart !!
it means that if, in this world, everyone tried to to show some nurturing, caring and empathy for the lowliest creatures, both human and animal, this world would be a better place and maybe we'd be more appreciative of the wonder and gifts we've all been given, and in return, God may be appreciative of us due to our gratitude.
Walt Disney's favorite song.
Mine as well. 🥰
A simple message: feed the birds. Life changing.
Early each day to the steps of Saint Paul's
The little old bird woman comes
In her own special way to the people she calls,
"Come, buy my bags full of crumbs;
Come feed the little birds,
Show them you care
And you'll be glad if you do
The young ones are hungry
The nests are so bare
All it takes is tuppence from you
Feed the birds, tuppence a bag
Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag
Feed the birds," that's what she cries
While overhead, her birds fill the skies
All around the cathedral the saints and apostles
Look down as she sells her wares
Although you can't see it,
You know they are smiling
Each time someone shows that he cares
Though her words are simple and few
Listen, listen, she's calling to you
"Feed the birds, tuppence a bag
Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag"
One of my favorite songs from Disney... and favorite movie. =)
If you get a chance, watch the movie "Saving Mr. Banks" . Great movie. =)
Mary Poppins is better
she is portraying Mary Poppins
...now you got me bawling!😢😭 ah, saving Mr Banks!
I cried so hard so beautiful then laughed cuz as soon as it brights up she dissipates to steam!
This performance of “Feed the Birds” is flawlessly sung by Marusia Louwence, one of the great voices of the last 10 years. At 33y she will hopefully be singing for a long time to come. The close, personal style of Julie Andrews was a perfect match for this song, and her version is dramatically great, but a studio version. Marusia knocks it ‘out of the park’ live in front of 10,000 people! A completely different demand than singing on a good day with 17 takes. Even Ms.Andrews would admit Marusia’s talents are of a different time and place. Julie Andrews is an icon of the 60”s, 70’s and 80’s. But her career was abridged, as the voice of an Angel was cut short by unneeded surgery. Imagine the world if ‘charity’ were the focus rather than war, money, greed, drugs and crime....
Walt's favorite song. He loved so much this music.
So a beautiful voice! Thank you , 👍❤️
This is perfection.
Absolutely BRILLIANT !!!!!Congratulations ANDRE RIEU, MIRUSIA & JSO !!
Vielen herzlichen Dank!!!
Dem kann ich nur zustimmen . Danke
Who still listening to this song in 2020?👇
ME..... AND MILLIONS OF OTHERS.
ME !!! one of the best Disney soundtracks ever! loved by millions of people
I am. It’s beautiful.

2021...
What a wonderful voice ! So sweet and harmonious ! Love this melody !
que belleza de canción y que dulzura de voz!!!!!!. verdaderamente maravilloso!!! gracias
Angelic voice accompanied by a straordinary Orchestra conducted by a fantastic André Rieu.
Charity is another word for love. God is love and I think He had a hand in the creation of this song. It profoundly elevates my soul each time I hear it.
My nana just died 5 months ago and she sang this to me and my brother and she is gone up to the other Angels but the song goes on and on in my head and my heart
..God Bless your nana ...to rest in peace ...Amen !
Unbelievable performance…….. words cannot describe.
It is such a transient thing, to help another person in need, yet it is an act that may reverberate in eternity, as all our words and actions surely will. The importance of charity cannot be understated.
you will be missed, Richard
One of my favorite songs from Mary Poppins, beautifully performed. This brings tears to my eyes.
This never fails to make me cry...
Thank God for Andre, Mirusia, the rest of the cast, and the Johann Strauss Orchestra.
So pleasing to listen to and magic performances.
sung perfectly
The emotion the audience felt. Said it all. My favorite Mary Poppins song when I was little. And it's still my favorite Mary Poppins song today. Mary Poppins was a very selfless Governess if you think about it. You see it in the end of the movie when she's talking to the parrot on her umbrella handle.
Im listening feed the birds and cry. Wonder full song
Wonderful such a beautiful voice 😀
RIP RICHARD.
Feed the birds. Feed my sheep.
Now it is 2020. And corona virus . But all listen this song . Listen and think . 🕊🌞🕊❤
Yes, You said it all! Maestro Andre and Mirusia are just the excellent performers for that song.
Here's to hoping that people realize that this song isn't about feeding birds.
could have fooled me
I disagree. It truly is about the small and simple things, even feeding birds.
@@rileyhinds8616 That maybe a bit of an over simplification. Here's what I feel the underlying message is. It's a song encouraging people to be less selfish and more generous to those in need, to bringing out the compassion in people. In the film, you see the old bird woman who looks haggard and ragged and obviously impoverished. And yet, she's found a way to sustain herself while helping poor hungry little birds. So when you buy the feed from her, not only are you helping the birds, you're helping an old impoverished woman in need. It's a metaphor, one that tells us that having a compassionate heart and giving generously when you are able is one of the most rewarding parts of life. And, in this world, it's definitely something we need more of. Have a good one and peace out my dude. ✌
@@SamiDC Beautifully PUT and I agree completely. Thank You
Myla Belle I agree. I never realised it wasn’t about feeding the birds, this song will be a lot more meaningful now. 😊
GREAT VOICE!!! BRAVO!!!!
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, performed magnificently.
Well I Love it, Mirusia is as beautiful as her voice, bravo
This song means a lot to a lot of people. Hearing it treated with this much respect truly remarkable and emotional.
Immortality is when you write, compose, or any other deed you do touches the souls of people long after you are gone. The Sherman brothers are immortal.
She nailed this song. She brought it justice for a rendition of this Masterpiece. I bet Dame Julie Andrew’s would Love it as well 🥳👏🏼🥳👏🏼🥳👏🏼🥳👏🏼🥳👏🏼🥳👏🏼Simply Beautiful
She is absolutely mesmerising.
