I think that Donald Trump introduced a useful analytical framework for this situation - that of the "shit-hole country". South Korea (at least initially) has demonstrated that it is not one. According to reports, the general public and law-makers (including the president's own party) shut down the self-coup. We will see how this develops, but the news is encouraging.

I know they do their job, I'm okay with it, but when one man goes against the whole country??? I know it is lawful, but when president goes off the rail without being in clear and police and military know that, that's crazy, if he was to start nuclear missiles and threathen the whole country's existance, wouldn't a sane person put built in his head? at that point it's just pure terrorism and what he did was VERY close to terrorism. he wasnt sanctioned or approved, he was in legal right to envoke it, imagine if he never revoked it, that's terrorism because he would go into unlawful waters.

    South Korea -Democracy Ranking 22
    India - Democracy Ranking 41
South Korea is enjoying “full democracy” with tanks rumbling through the streets of Seoul and soldiers casually parading inside the parliament. Nothing screams democracy like a military show in the heart of governance!

As soon as the marital law is declared, 20,000 citizens gather around national assembly to stop military from blockading the national assembly. Pretty much strong democracy shown here. While I don't know exactly how the rating is done, nor didn't even know such stupid ranking existed (why rank it? maybe you could class countries into different levels of democracy). If there was any reason why S.Korea would have high ranking in democracy, it would probably be because of the history of people fighting to gain true democracy against dictatorship or the attempts for dictatorships. However I do respect Indians and how their founding fathers made sure that the military was composed of people from diverse backgrounds and created a system to not allow military personals to be involved in politics.
