Did YOU know the DIFFERENCE? It is a big one!

- I like to refer to the backswing motion as a COIL instead of a TURN, and here is why. Coiling to me implies some sort of resistance and wind up motion that we can use to our advantage in the transition and downswing.
A turn, simply refers to opening or closing our body lines without any resistance being generated or a specific sequence to the turn.
Without coil or resistance, the golf swing will feel very unstable and power and compression are hard to generate, so, let’s get coiling everyone 💪🏻😎
Try it! Do you feel the tension in your backswing now? Let me know in the comments 👇🏻

love your explanation , short and sweet - to the point. so many YT golf pros spend lot of time about themselves and much todo about nothing.
I’d prefer much more your videos like this one, with good explanations than the short ones! You are a great coach! This is a good advice! Thanks for sharing
35 years ago that's how I played, low scores, long drives etc, since then I have heard time after time, especially for senors, collapse the left knee, the results are hard swings with no distance and high scores. Great advice!!
And back surgery
She’s absolutely correct! I’ve tried and studied countless compound pivot/takeaway videos. I used to coil then turned too flat which almost ruined my swing, now I’m back to proper coiling and the contact difference is night and day.
Simple drill to demonstrate why and how to coil over turn. Thank you.
Thanks for the clarification. As a beginner golfer it helps to have the nuances explained in an way that's easy to understand.
For sure! Anytime, so glad its helpful :)
Thank you! Such a clear explanation. Love your approach to explaining this.
Glad you enjoyed it! Stay tuned for more
Thanks Coach for this recap....enjoy your ...hallway demo's very much...generous...thanks for sharing
Yep, that’s the way my left knee breaks down. Thanks for the longer explanation! Likely will help me as I progress with my swing improvement:-)
Very good instruction and most helpful on the relationship to the hips, the upper body and coiling. Makes sense thanks so much!
such a great exercise (and explanation) to feel the difference between "the power (coil)" and "the turn"!
This lesson has finally fixed my golf swing. Great job, thanks.
100% my problem. I could never follow through properly because I was always behind. Large bucket in the morning! Can't wait!
Thanks again Coach, this is the first time I've realized I was not coiling!....HUH! Follow-through is so much harder from a turn..😍
Good job! this is how we learn and grow!
Thank you for your information and great tips I hit my long irons yesterday my three and my four quite well with your hallway approach Well explained if you can comprehend it Thank you
Exactly! Great video, I did my “Corkscrew” drill, or a “right pocket” drill. I feel like my lead leg is more of a corkscrew as I go into the back swing.
I figured it as as a coach was having me turn too much, it screwed my swing up.
This is what we need to do.
Great explanation. I have an 8.3 index and I been over swinging for years. Now I know why. Thank you Caroline for a great tip and it was free ! I did subscribe so all good.
You are an excellent coach. I live in India and I feel that my coach is holding a lot of information from me. I picked up Golf very quickly because of my Tennis background and I find your videos very logical, practical, and to the point. Your analysis are really helpful. All the best to you coach!
Very good video ... will for sure SHARE this to my thousands of followers on my golf page ... so many need this little BIG detail to fix their backswing ;)
Great explanation you make it uncomplicated, thanks for the tips
For sure! So glad your enjoying my channel!
You are amazing. Thank you for reminding me the importance of the proper coil and how it starts.
Great job explaining that.
It also allows you to keep your body over the ball. This action removes the hip sway that is created when you collapse your knee away from the target. Love your videos.
Yes it does! thanks so much for watching :)
I've never heard that about the turn! I always thought you were trying to get the chest turned back since they're always talking about getting your back facing the target. I've heard about the coil but never quite "got it". thanks for clarifying this. Seems like a very important lesson.
Eureka moment! Explains so, so much. Coil and turn so different Thanks.
It makes such a difference and is really not that difficult once we know to focus on it and understand it! you know me i want you guys to LEARN and understand and not just provide a bandaid solution. Love that it helped you! Keep up the great work!
Thanks Carolin, just the video I was looking for. I know that when I get this coiling of my body right, I get so much more power.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent Coach. The last minute of instruction applied to me….not enough turn and then flip to catch up and big left miss after getting stuck. Tried a bigger turn at range today and shot dispersion so much better….thanks heaps from Perth Australia.🙏
Amazing! Yes there are both extremes and both are not helpful to play our best! Even I have to sometimes make sure I make a good turn! Great job!
Really a very helpful explanation on a point where there is much confusion. Thanks for taking time to do this.
So glad its relevant and hitting home! I see this so much and yes its not talked about enough!
One of the best tips and it’s exactly where I am at in my development for consistency.
This is really interesting. I've always known my impact position was too square and tried multiple thing to improve it without much success. My left knee also collapses as you demonstrated, but I've never realised this could be the root cause of my poor impact position.
Yep its all about the root cause and those are usually in the set up or backswing!
I enjoyed learning about that information and will give it a try.
This was so helpful! I have been struggling with consistency so much. If sucks because when I hit the ball well it seems like as if I have a natural ability, but when I don’t have the consistency I become frustrated. These drills have helped me fix that. Thank you!
You are so welcome! Thanks so much for watching!
I started about two months ago… from baseball to golf… thank you for this drill.
Great video coach.. struggled for long time with body sequence and timing in downswing.. this helps greatly 👍
As I play the tips I get are relevant and have helped. This left knee firm helps a lot with direction and short irons.
This might be what i've been looking for! I'm gonna try it out tomorrow for sure. Thanks Carolin :)
Your videos are great. Good instruction, simple and straightforward. Keep them coming!
Thanks, will do!
Great explanation. Never heard someone discuss this.
It really is not talked about enough!
well said ... great way to think turn to coil...
Your hallway lessons are super helpful, a great idea. The walls allow a visual of the correct vertical lines. Such an intelligent yet simple idea.
Glad you like them!
So happy I came across your channel! Thank you for the helpful golf content, it's much needed!
Happy to help!
Could you do a clip or video on alignment/aim? I struggle with this all the time. I feel I am aimed right and I hit a good shot, but it goes to the right/ left of target when I thought I was lined up correctly.
Another excellent video. I really get a lot out of the way you explain things. Keep them coming!!!
Awesome, thank you! Will do!
🙏thank you an excellent description of what to. This totally reinforces what I am trying to achieve thank you
You are so welcome!
good distinction. Easy to recognize as well ! thank you
You bet!
yes, very good lesson.ty.
Glad you liked it!
First time I have ever heard that explanation regarding the lead knee. I also like the use of the term coil instead of turn, when I have felt like a spring loading up with energy I have some of my best shots. Maybe you have helped me identify why it can be so fleeting because I need to stabilize my lead knee.
Right on! So glad this resonated!
Dear Coach
That is ths greatest lesson l have ever seen It could be the actual Ben Hogan secret! You have highlighted the huge flaw in my swing. I can't wait to try it I think iit could be transformational🙏 And you explain it so clearly.
I trust you'll be at St Andrew's for the open Book me first for your golf clinic
Thank you so much
Trés clair comme explication, merci. Je m'abonne.
Wow, what a great explanation - thank you! I've been trying it here in my living room and I can feel the coil in my (opposite) oblique & back, where the turn is much more in the hips (and legs).
Amazing! You dont always have to be on the range to get better :) love it! great work!
Love the tip and explanation on its importance. Look forward to your other videos.
More to come!
totally agree...have been doing this technique of about 3 yrs now and have been consistent with my ball striking and accuracy
Amazing, it really is a key move!
Thank you so much for the tips 🙏🏼🙏🏼👍🏼
Excellent clarification of this point. I have found this whole topic really helpful, thanks very much.👍
You are very welcome! thanks for watching!
@@coachcarolin that's been really helpful, thanks for the reply, now I'm working on my release. I've seen you touch on that already so hopefully that will be my next success, thanks again.
Best explanation of coiling! Thanks.
Thanks so much!
Good explanations ....
Definitely helps. I just need to build stronger muscle-memory.
i enjoy your videos and always get something out of them plus you are nice to look at.
nice i just started a month ago learning all the skillset and fundamentals ty
By Nature Yes absolutely; must open with left femur; Rory even makes a slight side step "LEFT" to manage this!
Brilliantly explained
Terima kasih atas pelajarannya dan ilmunya semoga kita2 dapat belajar supaya lebih baik lagi🙏🙏
Thank you for sharing. Very helpful!
Thanks Coach your explanation is the best
Thanks so much!
very easy to understand......well done
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Hi- love the video. So when you make a proper “coil”, should you feel a pull or tension across your waist area due to the difference in rotation between chest and hips? That wasn’t mentioned, I believe. Thanks
wow that is an excellent demonstration thank you
BINGO!!! I can now drive into the ground without hitting a slice. Great tip!
Thank's Coach🙏🙏🙏
You are so welcome!
Good advice. Good job.
Nice drill.. thank you
You're so welcome!
Excellent explanation.
Really you are genius
Great video. Very clear explanation!.....I am still terrible...
You can do it!
During the backswing you should also be bracing yourself against right-side shift via the thigh muscles of your right side. Doing this will act as a stiff bolster to limit unnecessary body movement.
Very good explanation, very good looking ❤😂
Very good explanation, I really appreciate your UA-cam shorts. They are very clear and concise please keep them coming. The hallway makes them simple to follow.
Awesome thanks so much and im so glad they are helpful!
Very similar to the David Ledbetter w/Nick Price CD I used to watch religiously in the 90's. Worked great for me then but I've lost a lot of muscle mass over the last 30 yrs. so it's hard to replicate.
I used to calapse my left knee like that and sliced everything with an inconsistant ball strike.
My usual game is 10 to 12 over per nine holes.
Today, using this method I shot 6 over per 9, and most of it is putting, I suck at putting.
Hopefully, I can do the same or better tomorrow.
Thank you
Brilliant. Thank you 🇦🇺
First time watching your videos. This makes sense but you have to be very flexible to push your left knee towards target on the backswing. Good drilll I will give it a try.
Thanks! Yes but it also allows you to work toward that specific flexibility you need for golf so its a great exercise to get where we need to go!
wow never explained any better anywhere
Good stuff! Feel is definitely not real. Exaggeration drills are so important and you must use video!
Absolutely!
I have seen a lot of your videos and I also have a hallway just like this... no clue why I never put 2 and 2 together and tried to use it for the drills you teach LOL.
That breakdown of the knee is so often missed in coaching. Thanks!
You bet!
This is why most people can’t hit long irons. You have no chance collapsing your left knee or moving too far away from the wall at hitting a long iron. I would take a 3 iron any day over a 5 wood. But my swing thought for my iron is always not moving off the wall
Yeah, makes sense. I really like when coaches/ teachers understand "dynamics" . And that is the difference. I don't know that the average golfer will ever truly know what that means. Coil is dynamic, turning is not.
Therefore when someone simply turns there is no rebound no recoil, which will require an additional movement to swing the club down.
Typically the arms have to make a lateral move or a cast so to speak. WHICH in my opinion moves away from the natural rotation of the arms. We don't think about that but as we coil and the uncoil, the proper rotation from the arms in the arm ball socket rotator cuff. AND for that matter the rotation of the legs in the hip socket.
Easier to show than to describe as I am coming off way too technical. But for the serious golfer they need to feel the dynamics that are created by the proper coil which are essential for the uncoiling of the body for the proper impact position
Nice video. That explains a lot
Glad you liked it!
Keep up that great work! I will certainly work on that drill as you instructed. As I said, I will be in Tampa in the fall. By the way, is that picture on your wall in front of the camera a picture of Cuba? Thanks again for sharing and look forward to meeting you one day.
Great video. Thank you. I can see this work for an iron. Would it be the same movement for fairway woods and the driver? As a lady golfer I need to rely on my fairway woods and get the driver off to a good length.
Yes, it would be the same! Love seeing a fellow lady golfer! this will really help you maximize those yardages!
Coach, would it be possible to post a video about managing fatigue in the course? I am a 20 handicapper and just hit 84, but with great effort and ended up exhausted (I consider myself fit, I go consistently to the gym) Maybe through effective nutrition? (cereal bars, bananas etc) Thank you!
For sure! One of the keys is to not focus on golf between shots. that way you can save it for the times you are actually preparing and hitting your shots. Take a deep breath, enjoy the walk, talk to your flights partners! This way you only have to focus for a small fraction of the round versus 4 full hours!
Turn your shoulders against your hips, it’s that simple, create resistance in the core, spring load your body.
Amazing tip. Subscribed.
Awesome, thank you so much and welcome to Coach Carolin Golf Family!
Thanks Coach Carolin..I like to think my left knee over the left foot .. then coil and push hard the left knee in the down swing follow the arms then last chest??
Nice video
anything on pre Golf warm up / compensatory moves. At the moment my ribs are hurting bc I did neglect that part and overtrained
Great video
Great vid!
Thanks
Did you build the house specifically for the golf lesson? Well use of your walls. Congratulations.
🤣 not specifically, but it turned out to be THE best training aid! Thanks, glad you like my tips.
YES!
