There is a reason why the guitarist (Shiren) uses a Strandberg. He used to play ESP's, but he developed tenosynovitis in his wrist, and it became very painful to play, so much so he almost gave up and left the industry. He then started to play the Strandberg, as it's less weight, also, as in the video, he can play it on a stand. Over time, his injury has got better, where he will play 1/2 a concert with the guitar on a stand and the rest without it. Jill on violin is world class, and she can play almost anything you can play on guitar, on the violin. There were times after Shiren's injury were she would step in and play his parts on the violin. Some times the singer (Fuki) and Shiren take a break, so the rest of the band carry on, which they sometimes call "QUADRATUM From Unlucky Morpheus" or "QUADRATUM" for short, "QUADRATUM" do covers of known rock/metal instrumentals, here is 2 for you【Live Cover】Eruption(Van Halen) ~ The Dance of Eternity(Dream Theater) ua-cam.com/video/XC2A1hbuLmI/v-deo.html It just shows how good the band are without their 2 main members.
Congrats on finding Unlucky Morpheus-one of the best, most creative bands in the world today. I would have guessed you had seen them already, but always up for a first reaction! They remain independent by choice, in order to retain complete artistic freedom. They started off in 2008, focused on making soundtracks to video games and anime. They went through a lot of different stylistic phases, but the big transformation was when they brought Jill (violin) on board. Like many Japanese bands, they sound incredibly clean and tight live. My top suggestion for a live clip: “Angreifer” ua-cam.com/video/gGKWgM4IOgc/v-deo.html Meanwhile, amid the (justified) excitement over the Japanese all-female metal bands, we forget there are plenty of guys who throw down. Shiren, founder and one of the guitarists, also does the growls. Fumiya (Drums) is, as you saw, insane and inexhaustible-one of the best rock drummers in the world. Jinya (G) and Ogawa (B) are top-notch as well. Basically, this band is a technical monster. Fumiya and Ogawa also have interesting, “beast” personae which contrast with the “beauty” of Fuki and Jill. That contrast is a deliberate trope, similar to the “Beauty and the Beast” imagery of many European symphonic metal bands. Fuki (lead singer) is a legend in Japan, and one of the busiest artists anywhere. She is also lead singer for UM, Doll$boxx, Lightbringer and her own ongoing project, Fuki Commune. Her style is very much out of the Japanese classical tradition, with the oversold vibrato and intense high notes. She collaborates with a lot of the top musical talents in Japan. Jill (violin) also has a busy dance card, including collaborations with Fuki and others outside of UM. Jill is actually my favorite member of Unlucky Morpheus. I consider her the best rock/jazz/metal violinist in the world today, and probably the best since Jean-Luc Ponty. After Shiren (founder, original lead guitarist) started suffering from an injury that limits his playing, they rewrote a lot of his solos for Jill. Hard to come up with another violinist who could pull that off. Here are links to instrumentals featuring her in UM’s instrumental project Quadratum: Cover of van Halen "Eruption" ua-cam.com/video/eTb0TQtVT6k/v-deo.html Cover of Malmsteen "Far Beyond the Sun" ua-cam.com/video/E2hZDzJp9Pc/v-deo.html Cover of Dream Theater, played blindfolded: ua-cam.com/video/8eZVVtaOBKk/v-deo.html I saw UM live in London in 2019, when they headlined Metal Matsuri. Great show, and the chemistry between Fuki and Jill was electric.
Great request and reaction. Big fan of UM. Recommend the live version of Black Pentagram next and also check out the amazing violin cover of Far Beyond the Sun for a change. Even Yngwie Malmsteen saw the MV and was inspired. 🤘
Oh damn that's me! I'm happy you checked them out. I love this band. These guys and Lovebites are my favorites. I don't know why I just found this now, I'm subscribed but I guess I missed the notification. On one of your Lovebites reactions you mentioned Racer X, well if you search Unlucky Morpheus's official youtube channel you can find them doing covers of a couple of Racer X songs under "Quadratum." The songs are "Technical Difficulties" and "Scarified." Quandratum is the instrumentalists of Unlucky Morpheus sans the lead singer(s). I can't remember if I mentioned it but they also did a cover of "The Dance of Eternity" by Dream Theater. There's actually two versions of that on their channel, one of them is live, I recommend the live version just because, you know, live. Live is cool. The live one has Van Halen's Eruption and The Dance of Eternity combined in one video. I think the violin fits so well in The Dance of Eternity, I actually prefer it to the original lol.
best band ever and if you gonna check out more from them always aim for live videos unless it's the song "Cadaver Revadac", this should be done with sheet music to fully get the idea
I know this is a late comment but the singer, Fuki, has a side project Doll$Boxx (Dolls Box), which is her singing with the musicians from Gacharic Spin (it is pronounced like cha-cha but with a g). Doll$Boxx and Gacharic Spin are both worth checking out, there will likely be some new live videos as they are doing a combined tour in 2024 (once the tour happens). I'm not really sure exactly what genre Gacharic Spin is exactly (rock of some kind probably), but Doll$Boxx is metal.
i requested this video ages ago! so happy bryan is finally reacting to them. These are one of the bands i show older people when they say my generations music sucks. You just have to search for it a little but music isn't dead, especially rock music. Please react to black pentagram by unlucky morpheus. Won't be disappointed! and yes it's japanese, from Japan my home town. ❤💖
Great Reaction, from my favourite album of theirs "Change Of Generation" an album that can match the Lovebites albums and Shiren was the reason I eventually got into this band since he also played in my ohter favourite band Yousei Teikoku. Some people have written that You should check out "Cadaver/Revadac" next, I agree and its from the same album.
first video I've seen of yours thanks for posting love this band. If you haven't checked out they have a side project quadratum it's all cover songs of 80s-90s guitar heroes with Jill (their violinist) doing the lead guitar parts includes songs by Yngwie, Steve Vai, theirs a live video of them doing eruption & dream theater's dance of eternity, Racer X (Paul Gilbert), Tony MacAlpine & more. 🤘
How dare you compare Lovebites to these absolute masters of destruction? Lovebites are not competition in any way for Unlucky Morpheus, even more so, if we are talking about power metal or Japanese symphonic power metal, they are not in the same league as Galneryus or Versailles either.
The band is great, the singer is not. But if you want to hear some next level Japanese band you should try Galneryus, their song Angel Of Salvation is great.
Although there are many high caliber bands in Japan I put Unlucky Morpheus and Lovebites at the top of the list. Next song Cadaver / Revadac

Cadaver/Revadac...that's the next Unlucky Morpheus song you need to check out!
Second that
Third! In particular, the official music video.

Ayasa from East Of Eden can pull that off. 😉

That's why UM is one of my favorite japanese band!🤘🏻🔥
UM kicks ass. I put them on the same level as Galneryus. Symphonic power-metal. Top-tier talent.

I agree with you, for sheer chops, UM are clearly on a par with Lovebites.
JILL !!! JILL !!! JILL !!! 🤘🎻

You should checkout their live version of Eruption/Dance of eternity cover!! Jill is doing the keyboard parts and everyone is awesome!!!

💥💥🔥🔥I'm in😃 I got LOVEITE vibes too. 🖖❤
Unnecessary to compare them to Lovebites. They both do what they do excellently.
Thank you
