If the shot is too good and they can't get to it they just call let and the referee gives it to them. Another thing that's noticeably different from today is how lose most of the shots are, almost no effort to keep it tight to the wall. These days that crap would be put away into the nick.
I am not saying they are bad; I am just saying that they are just not as balanced as modern racquets. And if you can consistently hit nicks, you are a really good player. I know I was not able to hit 3 nicks in a row.
I was never talking about hitting 3 nicks in a row, I was pointing out how in this video they almost never seem to bother to hit the ball tight, they just bash it down the middle of the court. If you watch it, the game strategy and tactics are obviously different from what you see even with juniors now days.
I apologize then. I misunderstood your comment :) Maybe, you are right and the game has evolved. What I wonder in men's game, they used to hit great length all the time. I am referring to the Khans, Rodney Martin, etc. And I believe cheap let was rampant until the introduction of review system.

Try playing with one of those racquets and hit the nick or outright winner.
I did play with one of those racquets, they're not that bad.
