    Great video! One thing about lists: I find keeping a list throughout the week(s) between my confessions and noting sins as I commit them or realize them is a healthy way of identifying particular patterns of sin I may not be aware of and asking for specific prayer to overcome them. They're a tool that can be helpful or unhelpful depending on the disposition of the heart.

But I really wanted to say, I love listening to you. Your voice speaks to me. Growing up with Ukrainian parents in America, born here, it reminds me of my tribe. You are my Tribe. I love all of this, except for #9, because I believe that lists can be helpful if used properly: that is, as a prep for making concrete what it is that needs to be confessed and (speaking personally) to help me to avoid making excuses for my sins or playing them off as anything less than sin. FWIW. But I do get the point that you are making about how lists can be problematic.

    When I go for confession, I have a list in my mind what I need to confess, but when I get up to the priest, my mind goes blank. I make a list, but then forget where I put it. I still am working on doing this better, but I am a convert and confession isn’t what I am familiar with. I was raised Lutheran. My husband was raised Roman Catholic, so he was more familiar with it. However, that being said, I have been Orthodox for 43 years now, so no excuses. 😔

  • @icarusdei6592
    @icarusdei6592 3 роки тому +9

    Disagree on the list. If I didn't have notes to refer to, I'd literally spend the entire confession going "um...ahh....um...there was something...uh...um...um...um..." It's not like you're reading out a letter. Nothing wrong with having quick references so you can focus on confessing your sins instead of simply trying to remember what you needed to bring up.

    Also reconfessing sins depends on the disposition of the heart. If you doubt forgiveness then bad. If through repentance you realize the deeper damage then it’s beautiful. Example would be you confessed something only out of fear of hell or a sense of obligation, but later on it was revealed to you through repentance how it actually wounded your relationship with God. I think any priest would rejoice at that.

    The list one is only bad if you’re being scrupulous. Some people have the gift of oration, some people have the gift of writing. For some people if they don’t have the paper to keep them grounded they will fall into some of the other things you mentioned (like going into too much detail, or confessing others sins). Ultimately the worst thing you can do is not go to confession. GO. Then start GOING REGULARLY.

    During my first confession after converting via GOARCH, the priest asked if I killed anyone. I blurted out a laugh and said "No!" I was embarrassed that I laughed during my first confession. I also felt like the priest might think I was hiding sins because I've always lived a conservative life, paranoid and afraid to sin. Eating too much (or not exercising enough to burn the extra calories, taking a pen from work, getting mad at people (but not physically doing anything), and having bad thoughts where honestly the extent of my sins. I'm not a member in good standing (haven't paid a yearly pledge, nor attended Divine Liturgy in many years). I'm considering attending a different GOARCH church half as close to my home as the one I used to be a member in good standing with. I assume I would need my Priest's permission/blessing to make that change. I also assume I'll need to perform confession and become a member in good standing again at my original church before being welcomed as a member of the church closer to my home. ???

    Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the issue with the list was over focusing on specific aspects or listing context that deals with other people. I tend to like it as a simple reference to make sure I am putting in proper prep. I also try to use it as a reminder to cover my own shortcomings when a sin may involve multiple people. It's a tool that can be helpful or harmful depending on use.

    • @HomoEucharistica

      Let's say that there are different customs in different churches, so it is better to ask your local priests about it. In Finland where I live, you can receive the holy gifts (which are in the center of the divine liturgy) without confessing your sins *before the liturgy,* but in general it seems to be more common (and more traditional) habit that you *must* go to confession before the Holy Eucharist. I'm quite sure priests are available before the liturgy, but it is perhaps more certain if you "book" a time for confession (e.g. emailing a priest that you want to come to confession and asking when would it be suitable time to come).

    Attention! Changing something at 360 degrees meens, in fact, that nothing changes, means to stay the same. Because if you will turn 360 degrees in a circle, you will arrive in exact the same position without changing anything. In this case the most appropriate expression could be changing at 180 degrees. Which means to arrive in the exact oposite place of your initial place and in a exact inverse position than your initial position. It's a common mistake. Hope this will help somebody. Two things: I do bring a list to confession because I don’t want to forget for the purpose of reminding myself of what I need to focus on, and do you think that being nonspecific would apply to saying “I was this or that”, like that you had a certain disposition or feeling instead of saying “I did this or that”

    • @loverlei79
      @loverlei79 3 роки тому +1

      If you need a list to remember a sin, its clearly not bothering you enough to be repentant. Confessing sins isn't just saying them outloud. It's actually feeling sorry for what you did and asking God forgiveness. The Priests prayer in the end covers miscellaneous forgotten sins or unknown ones.
      Love does not keep a record of wrongs. Neither should confession. Furthermore we live in a cancel culture society. What if your sin list got out? Why on earth would you leave that to chance? Writing an actual paper document of everything you can be blackmailed with is just dumb.

      Don't rush.
      There can be multiple confessions.
      Confess on a specific thing you did which bothered you and made you want to repent in the first place.
      You're human and it's normal to make mistakes.

      Just to make sure - bring it and ask the priest about the future confessions :-) You are always *allowed* - however, I noticed that priests in general are not a huge fan of lists.

    Dear Bojan,
    Would it be a sin if I convinced a very recent convert that in traditional Orthodox countries, on Pentecost Eve children await the coming of the Pentecost Platypus (in Serbia known as Dušana Platypa, among the ancient Britons as Whitsun Winifred)? What if I made up a legend like that she swims up the drain pipes bringing fresh fruit to good children to herald summer... and to naughty children, she brings pleurisy...?

    My advice for people who are afraid of confessing their sins to their priest is to go to another church within their denomination where they don't know the priest and confess their sins

    Please don't take this the wrong way, but something came to mind.
    Isn't Apostle Paul kinda doing the "I did all the sins, I broke all the commandments, yes, even those", but in less words, when he says that he's chief of/first among sinners?

    • @HomoEucharistica
      @HomoEucharistica Рік тому

      Being first of sinners is not same thing than breaking all the commandments. Btw, we all pray (imitating St Paul) before receiving the Holy Eucharist that _"I believe, O Lord, and I confess that Thou art truly the Christ, the Son of the Living God, Who camest into the world to save sinners, of whom I am first"._ So it could be said that those words (should) reflect the spiritual state of followers of Christ. There are surely some people who do more sins than I do, and surely there are people who commit less sins than I do, but for me I am truly first of all sinners... because I have no excuses and I don't want to believe anything bad about other people.

    What about sins that you're not even sure about, whether they were even sinful or not?
    I can't get a good Orthodox answer on this one, and it's causing me hellish scrupulosity.
    Would not confessing uncertain "sins" completely negate the absolution?

    • @BibleIllustrated
      @BibleIllustrated  Рік тому +1

      Uncertain sins are best discussed with the priest you're confessing to.
      Intentionally leaving them undiscussed might be problematic.

    I don't know I did it before confession, but we will always suffer no matter what.... for how this world is controlled..... for all this medicine and crap that we take.... we will never know the truth until we all die, and to meet the true king, not Queen Elizabeth nor king Philip.King Jesus, and all of the saints.

    • @reaperanon979

      There's probably only one judge for that, but you might as well say it. Confession isn't the place you go to to feel guilty and admit your faults.
      When people call the church the hospital of souls they mean it, you go for a (spiritual) medical checkup. If you think you have a symptom mention that "this might be a sin but I'm not sure" and simply state it.

      Confession comes with a great sense of relief, since it lets you re-ente into full friendship with Christ. It's a chance to set things right. It's normal to feel a bit anxious about it, but receiving the sacrament is a joyous moment.
