    🚨 UPDATES 🚨 As we get further info and detail about compatibility, I'll try to keep this comment updated.
    • There seem to be power considerations with Xbox controllers. I get best results using a charged wireless controller (under its own power) connected via USB for communication. Strictly wired controllers may or may not receive enough power from the USB-C port to function.

      @@GenXGrownUpYou sure you are Gen X? You sound more like a proper boomer.
      I was born in 79, I know the difference between a Dual Shock 1, 2, 3, 4, SIXAXIS and Dual Sense (yes, I know the difference between a DS 1 and 2 and a SIXAXIS and a DS3).
      Anyway, is good to know that they are finally listening to the customers, let’s see how much does that last. Atgames used to listen, now they are fucking back all of their customers by stripping out their devices of advertised functionalities.
      By 2026, My Arcade will be back to their ways, I’m sure.

      You should try the Retro-Bit Official Sega Genesis USB Controller... it can use either D or X input (you said X input works with the Gamestation Pro) and because it uses the Genesis button layout (namely A, B, C buttons in a row) this should be PERFECT for games like Missile Command Arcade with three bases.

    We bought the GSP for our kids Christmas. There is no doubt that they will like the new sleek look as well as wireless controllers. We have a retro arcade near our home so they will recognize some of the pre loaded games and I’m looking forward to loading some of my old favorites. The smaller platform as well as the wireless controllers will make it perfect to connect to the tv in our mini van for road trips. And lastly the cost is a no brainer, I grew up with the original but don’t have the time or money to buy cartridges.

I used a controller for it and then my cat chew through the wires and I thought I was screwed for the moment. But then I plugged in both PlayStation mini and Sega genesis minis controllers, and I’ll be damned , it worked. I can’t do any twin state games like Robotron but it’ll definitely hold me over until I find another PlayStation 2 like controller.

    Since getting the Gamestation Pro, this has been my #1 channel for information, and I hope you will continue investigating 3rd party controller support for this system. I would love any ideas or investigation on whether the 8bitdo Arcade Stick can work with the Gamestation Pro, I can only get button presses to work in the menu, but joystick navigation will not work in spite of the controller supporting X-input mode, and I fully enjoy using this controller with the Atari 50 collection on Steam.

      Thanks and welcome! I have several follow-up videos that you'll no doubt find useful, but on the topic of the paddle, it's not observed in arcade emulation. Arcade games had spinners whereas the GSP's controllers have paddles. The non-stop nature of a spinner makes paddles with hard-stops sadly incompatible.

    This is an excellent video. In my top three of possible cons for this comsole was controller replacement issues/possibilities. An Xbox controller will suit me fine when I feel like it might be best to preserve the integrity of the sticks that come with the console. Let's face it, joysticks designed like this, these days, break. I would prefer that My Arcade offer replacements and I've put in an inquiry to find that out, but in the meantime, it's great to know that I have alternatives. I'm running out of reasons not to buy this. Being in Canada, I'm having issues with that (as of yeaterday) and still a bit on the fence. My other major issue is that the paddle doesn't work with paddles games, should I get into the SD card. The SD card is the biggest selling point for me because I already have the Flashback 9 Gold, by Atgames. It too has an SD card slot, which I am using so I have more than half of the games available on this. That means I care most about 5200 options, 7800 options, 8bit, 16bit, and arcade. I already have a bootleg nintendo with 300 games on it so that doesn't help this cause but at least I can narrow down my 8bit list to games I will actually play, on this console...that helps in the end. So I'm bouncing ideas around. I'm looking for reasons not to buy but I'm running out of reasons. This video is very helpful. I'll share what My Arcade tells me about my inquiry here, IF they respond. I had similar inquiries in to AtGames and they never responded...bastards. lol.
    Anyways your GSP vids have been excellent. I was available to enjoy the live stream two days ago and even watched it again yesterday to make notes and I don't have many, so that's a good thing. ✌

      Yeah, I knew that would be a common one out there, but I don't have a genuine one handy. I did have a knock-off that I tested (not in this video) and it did nearly nothing, so I didn't include it. I don't know if that's representative of Xbox 360 controllers in general or not, though. I suspect this aftermarket version didn't have Xinput protocol compatibility.

    I think it would be worthwhile to see if any 2.4Ghz controllers out there can connect wirelessly to the Gamestation Pro. 8bitdo and others make a few, and for those that are bluetooth: a USB-C to USB-A adapter plus either 8bitdo's or Mayflash's dongle should be able to support the rest.

      I very briefly tried this last night. I have a Logitech F710 controller that I use with my Commodore 64 (TheC64 from Retro Games). I set the controller to xinput mode and activated it, but my Gamestation Pro couldn't connect to it directly. I think the F710 uses the 2.4 GHz frequency band, but the console couldn't see it. I want to plug the controller's RF receiver into my Gamestation Pro to see if that works, but as yet I don't have a USB-A to USB-C adaptor to try it. I may get one soon, but at the moment my priority is to get some USB-C cables so I don't have to use batteries in the controllers. I will try the Logitech controller in Directinput mode and see if that works, but I doubt that it will because even in Xinput mode the console and controller didn't detect each other's carrier signals.

    Wondering if a Windows/Mac standard trackball or trackball mouse would work with games like the arcade or 5200 versions of _Missile Command, Centipede, Millipede, Crystal Castles_ and etc - especially because there are so many trackball games in Atari’s early history. Given the 5200 is a reworked Atari 400/800, which do recognize Atari’s trackball not just as a joystick, but also as an arcade-like trackball (using the switch on the back to toggle joystick/trackball input), for most if not all of those games, on an Atari 8-bit (working from 35-40 year-old memories, I remember that at least the OG and XL machines’ _Missile Command, Centipede_ and _Crystal Castles_ all work, as does _Crystal Castles_ on the Atari 2600, actually), then there’s a decent chance that the Gamestation or an emulator could work with a USB trackball, like an arcade trackball, for at least one of the versions on the Gamestation. Considering there are more than two buttons on modern USB trackballs-like controllers-and that they’re “standard sized trackball inputs,” some of those extra buttons might/could also work as Menu, Start, and Home buttons, too - if not for the 5200 games, then maybe for the 2600 or arcade versions. In fact, a mouse might actually work the same way, accounting for speed, which would be a great alternative to using the joystick, too, even if the included joystick accounts for speed, as an analog stick...

    • @mechamania
      @mechamania 9 місяців тому +1

      Also a good point that the spinner on the Gamestation is an analog input. So, that bodes well for at least a driver to accommodate USB trackballs...

  • @Injectorman
    @Injectorman 9 місяців тому +2

    I could think that, you could connect another controller with it and it would ask for the buttons or joystick(s) so it can map how it would be compared to the Atari controller. if there was to much buttons it would just remove it as it never existed, and it would also remember certain maps of controls on certain controllers. Like if you connected a hmmm…. A ps4-5 controller? it would remember it for future notice. But for the tech we currently have in 2023 i don’t think we can create a memory card like that.
    hopefully you read all this and share your opinions bellow!

    I tried a pair of wireless PS4 (no name aftermarket) controllers, and they absolutely did not work.
    I tried a wireless XBOX One controller (official, not aftermarket) 3:03 and it works fine (when plugged in with a USB cable). However, this controller works fine plugged in even when there are no batteries in it. So, it essentially functions as a wired controller. I wonder how a native wired controller would work.

It used to be that you could just plug in a USB controller and the system would recognize it, at least as far as the most standard inputs. It's interesting to note that if you change the colour of the colour ring on the controller and it's connected to your PC, I believe button 9 'latches' when you select white, and button 10 'latches' when you selected orange. It might be the other way around. I don't understand why the A, B and C buttons aren't simply mapped to 1, 2 and 3, and I don't know why the paddle control isn't mapped to a throttle or something. Since the Gamestation Pro doesn't work too well with the Retro Games Gamepad for the A500 Mini, I have doubts that The Joystick for TheC64 will work too. • @Lachlant1984
      @Lachlant1984 7 місяців тому

      @@GenXGrownUp That's true. It's easy to tell that the input is latched actually, because if you select a colour then turn off the controller but leave the console on, the lights on the console revert back to the colour changing mode. I've only put batteries in one of my controllers, but I'm curious to discover whether changing the colours on one controller will automatically change the colours on the other controller too, even if you don't press the light button on the second controller. I'm also a little surprised the the console and controllers don't remember what colour setting you selected when you turn them all off, that said, it makes sense now since the controller latches the inputs when you change the colour mode.

    I appreciate that they've made these other options viable (via USB-C) but if you don't like the joysticks, IMO, don't buy the console, as the controllers consume a large percentage of the price tag. I am a very harsh critic of the _Evercade Vs.,_ but a huge portion of the value of that console is the quality of the controllers (i.e., they're good, and if you have a positive preference for the d-pad on classic Sega Saturn controllers, they're even great)… nobody would be well advised to buy either one (the Atari or the Evercade) as an emulation box to plug your own arcade sticks into _if they didn't_ like the included controllers (and there are many, many competitive options to consider, BYOJ).

    I just got my Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller, the one GXG recommended, as well as the charging cable he recommended.
    I can say without a doubt that it works great! The big lit X serves as the reset button. The only thing I recommend is removing the paddles from the bottom of the controller because they can cause the Save button functionality to pop up a lot if you press the paddle by accident. Removing the paddles from the controller took care of this. They are fully removeable and go right in the carry case. All the paddles do is mimic the A, B, or C buttons anyway, so for me they weren't of any use.
    I will still use the controllers that came with the Gamestation Pro for 2600, 5200, and 7800 games. But for Genesis, NES, and Arcade games, the Xbox controller can't be beat! Yes it's more expensive than the Gamestation Pro itself. But I felt the cost was worth it because I know I won't get tired of the system now that I have a decent controller where I didn't have to feel awkward using the built in controllers, and did not have to remap any buttons for the Xbox controller!
    I am also guessing that any Xbox controller with a USB-C connector will work. But I did not want to take a chance and went with the Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller, the one GXG used in this video.

      @@GenXGrownUp Well that's good to know. How do paddle games work with an alternative controller. Speaking of paddles, I did try to play both Breakout and Super Breakout with the paddle, and I found the paddle to be quite jerky and rough in its operation, the bats in the games didn't move smoothly. That said, I only tried the games very briefly. My console needs to go back to the factory anyway, so maybe the controller also needs replacing. I've only used one of my two controllers with the console.

      @@Lachlant1984 I didn't experience that. I'm actually working on a troubleshooting video script right now, and one thing that can contribute to troublesome wireless performance is not having sufficent power to the console. The manual notes 5v/2a power supply or better. Below that will power on & work, but can impact both game and controller performance. As for paddle games with an alternate controller, no paddle on those, but the joystick/thumbpad worked as you might expect. Not ideal, but operable.

      @@GenXGrownUp OK. I'll need to check the AC Adaptor I'm using for it's ratings, I don't have issues with game performance and general controller operation, just the paddle knob on at least one of my controllers operates a bit roughly in my experience. I'll keep an eye out for your troubleshooting video.

      @@GenXGrownUp Well apparently the AC Adaptor I'm using has a rating of 5 volts at 2.4 amps according to its label, assuming the specifications are correct, that unit should be ample to power the GSP correctly, so hopefully that's not the cause of my issue.

    Quick question - can you plug in a wired Xbox 360 controller and see if that works with it? Thanks

      @@GenXGrownUpAh- good to know! Maybe a powered USB hub would solve some issues.
