Listened to this with my sister in the ‘70s. That squeaky door scared me silly and the very next night I was listening again. E.G. Marshall was the best.
5/29/23.....Any of these CBSRMT radio plays with a creepy mansion for the cover pic is usually a good & entertaining listen. I believe that Robin of the dynamic duo would say HOLY MIND CONTROL, BATMAN!
Its around 11:30 pm and the wife is sleeping and im listening to this Cbsmt episode, which im grateful for thank you for making it so we can listen to these shows
Newly subscribed I love love radio I do not watch tv I have two the strokes in my brain and I no longer see very well And I was an avid reader I’m an introvert and my friends were my books Love hauntings Love this site thank you
In general, I don't enjoy classic horror tales adapted for radio because they are substantially changed and/or truncated. In this case, though, someone did a rather good job with this Bulwer-Lytton story (also known as The Haunter and the Haunted). Thanks for sharing this.
I always assume that a human being has a fair chance of thinking its way out of the situation. The animal likely entered into the equation not realizing it might need an exit strategy in the first place.
That's real! Revelation Sorcerers witchcraft necromancy. we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers in the air against spiritual wickedness in high places
That image is my dream house ... So wonderfully macabre 😍 The story here was also adapted in the children's album "Alfred Hitchcock Presents Ghost Stories for Young People". ua-cam.com/video/zXp7YS-NWRk/v-deo.html Hitch introduces each of a handful of spooky tales that feature one narrator/actor and sound effects and music. Not bad at all for its time-- had to have been made in the mid to late 1960's. I remember Hitchcock, in his interstitials, was trying to deal with a dripping faucet which progressed into a massive flood in the house.
The version on the Hitchcock album is compressed to less than 15 minutes (maybe a lot less) so there's only enough time for the part of the plot that's a straight-up ghost story and nothing about a human intelligence causing the events in the house. There are at least four audiobooks of the original story available on YT. I like this one: ua-cam.com/video/Nf7cYog_xQM/v-deo.html The CBSRMT version is pretty close to Bulwar-Lytton's story except Sam Dann invented an additional plotline of his own, about a sinister character who's lived over a hundred years and wants to use his powers of hypnotism and telekinesis to become a world-dominating demagogue.
The original story, The Haunter & The Haunted, was written by Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1856. Here's a link to an excellent reading of the original story by Bitesized Audio : ua-cam.com/video/rPK0mBHrg4M/v-deo.html

E.G. Marshall, THE voice.
can't get enough, will introduce these shows to my granddaughter when she's old enough.
Perfect for walking! Thank you.
Great job. Not enough entertainment left out there that requires ones mind to enjoy
Amen
Luckily there are podcasts and audio dramas that feature fiction.

Every adaptation of any story to any media is never fully true to the original. Just read Harry Potter and then watch the movies.
It recalls the haunting of hill house. But all authors borrow from others.
Great choice of spooky mansion to accompany a Gothic tale!
A creepy phenomenon that has a scientific explanation is STILL CREEPY.
Another great story. Thanks for sharing!
Nice effort. E. G. Matshall had a wonderful voice for this sort of 📻 radio.
The death of animals always effects me much more strongly than the death of people in fiction. Not sure what that says about me.
Frank McGovern I also am affected much more strongly but then I like animals better than people.
I always assume that a human being has a fair chance of thinking its way out of the situation. The animal likely entered into the equation not realizing it might need an exit strategy in the first place.
I am with you.

One of my favorites 👍, but I don't believe amber and lodestone conduct electricity as he stated.
EG Marshall quoting the myth about the usage of brain capacity that was accepted in the 70's.. All that has been proven to be false now..
A man who lives in fear of danger lives in torment
Talk about synchronicity!!.. just watched "Lucy" with Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman... AWESOME movie btw. Same idea but 38 yrs ago!

This reminds me of a Sherlock Holmes story I listened to many years ago!!!

The line about the brain is repeated twice once at 19:45 and the other at 20: 37... Was this intentional or poor script editing.?

Why did they edited the same line twice.

@Pete Gosh, it must require lots of neglect to keep it so dreadful

DO YOU AS I NOW HAVE A HEAD ACHE??
We use 15% of our brain.
Einstein used 17% of his brain.
Do you accept statistics without proper documentation?
Do you accept that this is not a documentary but a Victorian ghost story?

Norman Rose sounds the same in all these plays - but he had an awesome voice 👍
