How about a ‘10-min, 1-hr, 10-hr’ challenge for large grid ships!

Love these build challenges. If you want to retry to test the ships I have a couple pointers.
The aim reticle is for the grid center of mass. If the turret is above the center you must aim above the center of the reticle circle an equal amount. The other technique that may help is accounting for the distance your guns are from the camera and aim reticle. If you have wing mounted guns and aim centered on a small target your shouts will fly on either side of the small target. Aim left or right.
On the 3rd one you were ejecting decoys while still having decoys yourself. I've found that doing flybys while dropping decoys, exiting their range and coming back in is most effective.
I've also taken to rear mounted cockpits relying on extra cameras for flying. I'm fond of putting glass in front of my main cameras

Thank you for the tips!! I think if I put parachutes on those decoys, they would have done much better.

    This series is great. :D
I can really tell you're not a big space combat guy though! XD I think it's cool that SE supports so much non-combat gameplay.
I AM a player who defaults to combat in any sandbox game I play, and I sometimes struggle to give myself tasks that are something other than "rush guns, kill bots." That's why I love your content! Your economy series where you gated major blocks behind a notional purchase requiring that you deposit credits into your faction account gave me some great ideas. My last SE playthrough, I paid an in-game daily expense of 100 credits per PCU. I typically overbuild up to the maximum PCU my PC can handle, so this overhead cost forced me to budget more strategically for my bases and ships.
This constraint forced me to be both thrifty and smart about building drills and fufilling high value, time-efficient contracts. I finally got some breathing room once i got up to 1M+ credit contracts for the really valuable components, Pt, U, etc.
For combat, I usually play with MES factions edited to spawn waypoints that are within aggro range of the player. By default, MES settings will NEVER path an NPC into aggro range. For non-combat focused players, this gives the player most of the control over time and place to engage an NPC -- the player has to deliberately enter NPC aggro range.
One thing I (and a lot of other combat-focused players I've seen) have learned is to never build an exposed cockpit or bridge, esp on top or front of the grid. Like you speculated in the video, I bury my cockpit at the rear of my ship, plus I put a heavy armor box around it, like an A-10 cockpit bathtub. It's easier in mid- to late-game survival to just print a lot of disposable drones with remote control and redundant protected cameras. That way I can launch and fly them from the comfort of my base or mother ship without having to respawn. (Toward which point, I need to look for a mod that adds some kind of cost or cooldown to respawns.)
All that armor is heavy, though, so I have to spend more of my thrust budget on upward thrust for lift. In gravity, I strafe the target vertically, then roll my ship to use the big lift thrust to "lift" my ship sideways rapidly as I pogo my ship over and around the target while facing it the entire time. I'll fall with gravity to accelerate faster, once I pass over the target.
For fighters vs fighters, I jam as many guns as possible onto the center axis to minimize the parallax you were experiencing. :D SE meta doesn't really have a good role for small grid craft, though. They're hideously PCU-expensive and fragile. Instead of building any 1000+ PCU small grid fighting ships, I prefer to go with a tiny large grid instead. They're bulky and ugly, cost more materials per PCU, and fewer thrusters mean less redundancy. But there's a fun minimalist challenge in building the best tiny large grid I can to substitute for a large small grid ship (or vice versa).
One advantage with small grid is the fixed cannons. You can build a solid grid of 9 assault cannons and a prog block with Whiplash141's salvo script, and presto -- you have a burst fire assault cannon. :D Technically a volley gun, like the old mitrailleuse. Large grid ships can mount these too, but that requires a few hundred extra PCU for rotors to convert the mounting to small grid. Either way, these can saw through most lighter ships, small or large grid. :D Requires less precision aiming than rail guns, which is good for me and my terrible aim.
By late game, you could do the same thing writ huge with a battery of railguns set to staggered salvo fire. Vanilla PVP meta I've seen tends toward banks of railguns or artillery firing in single large volleys.

Thank you so much for the tips! You're right I am not very used to combat in SE. I'm getting a little better with the Europa series but it's nothing compared to the things I see combat oriented players pull off! I've definitely got plenty of room to grow. It would be cool to do this same challenge again in a year.

Definitely think the gatling guns work best as a close pair or quad on the nose, really liked the gauss placement though.
Are there any guns that can be zeroed at certain distances? Dont know of any but if so they would be better for wings.
    Good times 🙃

    • @AndrewmanGaming
      @AndrewmanGaming  4 місяці тому +7

I agree, centralized gatling guns seem to be much easier to use. Zeroing of weapons is possible in theory with hinges or rotors where they rotate a tiny amount to account for distance, but it would likely have to be manually adjusted based on the target's distance. Maybe there is a way to have a script handle zeroing for using the locked target.

@AndrewmanGaming ngl, that script would be game changing, imagine 4 cannons centered on a reaver hydrogen tank at max range. Awesome fireworks show!

This could be a lot more intense if you went with full hydrogen ships because you have to be more deliberate with your design. I don’t think you’d be able to get a functional ship in 1 minute though. The conveyor connections might add too much time

This is a perfect example of what I have been saying for years. Put your cockpit in the middle of the ship. It’s always the first thing to get shot out and you are done. Hide it. Most of the time you are going to use cameras anyways.

Good comparisons but when it comes to a base attack with heavy weapons like a heavy cannon you wanna be always to be on the move or come from above and pull away quickly is the way I see taking on a heavily defended base on a planet considering the elevation limit for the Cannon unless the base is using a custom ball turret design than it could be more of a challenge is the way I see it, unless you have a system setup to make load custom missiles onto said fighter than can attack a heavily defended base thinking B-2 Spirit type distance

Don’t put your cockpits at the front, put them somewhere harder to hit like in the back behind some armor or at least some glass
