There's plenty of things he could have considered if not in a state of panic in his story to figure things out, like using a portable charger to keep his phone charged overnight and leaving it recording in a covered up spot to attempt at catching whoever is breaking in while he's asleep or figuring out a way to have a camera recording while he's out hidden or even just have a 2nd phone (if he could afford it) doing FaceTime with his phone (while his phone thats on him is muted in the call) left in the house on while keeping atleast one ear bud in at all times to listen for something happening back at the house so he can look when it does, just incase they did find the phone and tried to remove the evidence (ideally mute your main phone and have the camera off, and the dummy phone your viewing through stays connected to wifi to maintain connection, while having a lock screen to make it not immediately noticeable whats going on with it)
