A cheaper fix is to grind off the bar on the shifter and install a bolt with thrust bearings. It takes out all the slop and costs about £10 in total, leaving a lot more spare cash to fit a short shift linkage on the gearbox itself, which is where the majority of the slop actually is due to worn plastic parts on the linkage.
I also had this issue on my project 944, put the new shifter in 2 weeks ago (also from design911) but there's still a lot of play. I think i need to have a look under the car next..
