I saw this for the first time, myself, within the past year. What a performance. Not just Sidney, but Rod Steiger was great as well. As you said, all performances, top notch. Such a great cast, you really can't go wrong.
My favorite of his is Sir With Love but also love A Patch of Blue also Sneakers A great film with River Phoenix in it I believe he also directed that film but don't quote me on that one though.
I was a little white girl in Quebec City, Canada when this was on tv. I remember asking my mom « Why are they so mean to the man? » (Tibbs). She starting explaining some tough truths about racism past and present. I was gobsmacked.
Hi I’m brown myself and I still haven’t had that convo with my kid. She’s too innocent and doesn’t notice that she just knows they’re all police. What your mom did was nice cause she explained it and you seemed to have understood at a young age. Thanks for being a ally. We’re all still kids someway and I believe talking gets us closer to a better and United conclusion.
"Yeah Chief, old Harvey's a lefty..." Damn, Warren Oats never disappoints. He's always a big favorite of mine. Hey Showdown, thanks for your great reaction to this fantastic classic film.
High School projectionist in a small town. Glued to the drama........would near miss a couple change overs. The two kids after Virgil gets a room. Favorite movie of all time. Thank you .
The late great brilliant Sidney Poitier. Incredible man incredible actor. I can't even begin to describe I how in awe of him I was as a child. Still am tbh. Please dive into more of his incredible work, you won't be disappointed.
In the 60's Hollywood had so many fine actors and film- makers, resulting in great movies like this one ... that made us think. I feel truly sorry for kids today who are fed so much garbage on there screens. This is reality. R.I.P Sydney and Rod.
Their first encounter in the police station is absolutely hypnotic. I first saw this film in 1969 and have watched several times since. It is one of my all-time greats.
One of my favorite movies! From the perspective of 1966 and the Civil Rights, this was a watershed moment in film-making. Poitier and Steiger would sneak into theaters to see the reactions of audiences. When Tibbs slaps Endicott, the blacks would clap and the white audiences would go, " Oh! " It was a different and dangerous time. It took a Canadian director to make a true statement about racism in America.
Brilliant film with the incredibly handsome Sidney Poitier. I still get angry at the racism but Sidney's amazing performance is incredible. When he says 'They call Mr Tibbs' I always cheer!
Great film great cast , POITIER ,STIEGER, and all the co stars Warren Oates ,Lee Grant etc , Sidney always has great dignity on screen , whether he played a teacher a cop or a con on the run.
I remember when that movie hit the Theaters. I love his acting. Anytime you play his movies I will be there. Glad you mentioned the series. I would watch them again and again. 😍😍
I saw this move when it first cam out at a drive-in movie in Jersey City, NJ. To this day the move for me still ranks as one of the best movies I’ve see. I’d like to give you a thumbs up for your spot on ‘reaction. One other point, the actor George C. Scott ("Patton") was originally selected to be Seriff Gillespie, but had to turn the offer down.
I grew up watching Sidney Poitier, Diahann Carrol, and Woody Strode. If the courage, inner strength, wisdom and humanity of those actors doesn't dispel all racism out of a person, they are indeed lost souls.
I've seen it many times and have the DVD. Yes, it's one of the all time Great Ones. I had the pleasure of running into Anthony James (Ralph, the guy who worked at the diner.) He was very gracious and we had a discussion about the movie business. Besides being an actor, he was also a painter and a poet. He passed a few years ago. He appeared in two Clint Eastwood films: High Plains Drifter and Unforgiven. I miss him.
I really loved this movie... I grew up on the tv show as well, Matlock too, in the south if you stayed with your gramma you watched these two lol... I never saw the movie until I was older and i thought it was amazing... Sidney Poiter was perfect for this role...
Saw this for the first time maybe 10 or so years back. I agree that the performances were terrific, especially by the main cast. The 'They Call Me Mister Tibbs!' sequel I still have to see though. Ratings on imdb give that one 6 but I need to check it out for myself to see how fair that is.
This was a fantastic movie. Since you love horror, and I don't think you've already done it, you should do the original Night Of The Living Dead. Also Deliverance. See if the younger fans will stick with you through that movie haha.
Loved both the TV show and the movie! And loved matlock as well 🙂 Also airwolf, knight rider, mcguyver, fall guy, star trek TOS, star trek TNG, etc etc 🙂 I graduated 96....a lot of that stuff I only saw in reruns, but I remember you know, late 80s onward. 🙂
Haha, it sounds like we have similar tastes in TV shows! I mean, who can resist the charm of Matlock and the action-packed adventures of Airwolf, right? Glad to have you here reminiscing about those good old days!
I always liked the fact the sheriff was races but not so racist not to accept his help and even realizing he was smarter then the sheriff more realistic for the time.
On 8:11 this was the first time a black man hit a white man on screen. Sidney Poitier in a interview said he had to fight to get this scene on script. The original script did not have Mr. Tipps slapping the man back. Sidney told the director and studio producers that he felt that if he did not slap the man back that it would have been unrealistic, demeaning to black folks, and out of character for Mr. Tibbs not to retaliate. Sidney told the studio he would no longer be apart of the movie if the scene weren't rewritten. And that's how in 1967 the slap heard around the world ended up being in this masterpiece movie In the Heat of the Night! R.I.P. Sidney Poitier. 🙏🏾
The Quincy Jones score should have won the Academy Award. Born Free was nice, but wasn't like this one! I consider this movie to be in the top 10 American movies of all time. By the way, Poitier made sure that his contract stated that the movie could not be shown without "the slap." To his credit, the actor who played Endicott refused a stunt double and wanted the slap to be real, even though it hurt just like a real slap.
Can you imagine the reaction of black audiences to Poitier slapping the white man after years of seeing black people portrayed as subservant in the movies? Rumor has it that the slap was not in the script but Poitier insisted on it.
If you like Scott Wilson watch "In cold blood" with Robert Blake. It was based on the real murder of the Clutter family in Kansas, 1959. Truman Capote wrote a book about it and the movie is based on that. Both movie and book fascinating.
This is a great movie! I try recommending it to younger people that have reaction to movies on their UA-cam channel. But all they seem to watch are these dumb regurgitated superhero movies produced by Disney
I saw this for the first time, myself, within the past year. What a performance. Not just Sidney, but Rod Steiger was great as well. As you said, all performances, top notch. Such a great cast, you really can't go wrong.
Portier's best! "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner."
"To Sir With Love." Can't go wrong with these!
Should watch all his classic stuff. The Defiant Ones, To Sir With Love, Lillies of the Field. Man a legend fam
My favorite of his is Sir With Love but also love A Patch of Blue also Sneakers A great film with River Phoenix in it I believe he also directed that film but don't quote me on that one though.
Sidney’s character in this was awesome. I remember the television 📺 show as well.
It won 5 academy awards what a great movie!! Excellent job covering this!
When Sydney slapped him back, they called it, "The slap heard round the world."
Seen this classic many times, what great onscreen presence by everyone, thanks Showdown!
me 2

LILIES OF THE FIELD , was an award winner too ,To Sir With Love is another great film Sidney left a great body of work on screen and off it.
I've watched this movie a few times since I was a kid. So glad you got to watch this for your first time on the channel.
In the 60's Hollywood had so many fine actors and film- makers, resulting in great movies like this one ... that made us think. I feel truly sorry for kids today who are fed so much garbage on there screens. This is reality. R.I.P Sydney and Rod.
yes!
Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger's acting is out of this world. I saw it when it came out, one of my favorite movies.
I couldn't agree more! Their performances were truly outstanding.
Their first encounter in the police station is absolutely hypnotic. I first saw this film in 1969 and have watched several times since. It is one of my all-time greats.

Absolutely! Sidney Poitier's performance is truly iconic, and that moment is unforgettable.

It's always amazing to revisit those classic movies and appreciate the actor's talent.

Only seen the film about 5 times. :) It's such a classic. One of the best films ever.
Love this movie, it's freakin' awesome! Everybody should watch it!!

such A classic
Watched the tv show with my Nana. She loved T.J. Hooker too
Already hit the like 👍 button Showdown.
I grew up as a white kid whose parents absolutely hated racism. I saw this movie when I was a kid, and was horrified. I despise racism to this day.
Although he was a great actor , I've haven't seen many of his films .
But my mother loved him lol .
This was good .
Great Review ....

This is a good movie. I wish more people reacted to it.
Thanks Show for showing my comments love I appreciate that
I think Sidney was a driving force in several performances that forced us to look and see racism.
Late by a year but great reaction. Really enjoyed your recognition of the actors in it.
This is a great film. It just feels real.
thank you !
Freaking classic!!
I'm a police officer - Show "you jackass!" 😅😆😆

A RECORD PRODUCER. YOUR A LEGEND
thanks John !

I wanna check out the sequel too !
A very young Anthony James as Ralph, who you'll have seen in loads of films as a plethora of evil angular featured bad guy characters.
This was a fantastic movie. Since you love horror, and I don't think you've already done it, you should do the original Night Of The Living Dead. Also Deliverance. See if the younger fans will stick with you through that movie haha.
Have we done Lillies In the Field? Sudney just Too STRONG, my Momma Loves that movie!
For me it was all about that snatch and double slap 🤣🤣🍻
I like Sidney's dramatic stuff but I love the buddy movies with Bill Cosby-Uptown Saturday Night and Let's Do It Again. Those are my favorites...
minds too !
see Rod Steiger in a Sergio Leone film.
Goes by (at least) 2 titles: "Duck, you sucker" or "A fistful of dynamite".
The slap heard around the the world 😂
“What are you gonna do about it?”
“Ah don’t know.” No, you don’t, asshole 😂😂😂
Virgil Tibbs is the first Black Superhero!

And 55 years later, Will Smith fucked that all up. SMH, I miss Sydney.
(fyi, they call him Mr. Tibbs, not Tipps) ;)
@Rina Really? I have to watch that again. Haven't seen it in a long time!
I hate to admit it but I love that "fowl owl 🦉 on the prowl song.
Great actors and a great director usually adds up to a great movie. As here.

The series where great! Movie even better!
10:46 She played his mother in 'Guess Who's Coming To Dinner'.

You should check out "Tick Tick Tick." Underrated movie.
Cool hand Luke is a good movie. I’m like you on heat of the night
even younger Scott Wilson in In Cold Blood with Robert Blake.
If you like Scott Wilson watch "In cold blood" with Robert Blake. It was based on the real murder of the Clutter family in Kansas, 1959. Truman Capote wrote a book about it and the movie is based on that. Both movie and book fascinating.
Nice one! I'll definitely check out "In Cold Blood" with Robert Blake. Thanks for the suggestion!
YOU ARE AN OG
thank you !
This is a great movie!
I try recommending it to younger people that have reaction to movies on their UA-cam channel. But all they seem to watch are these dumb regurgitated superhero movies produced by Disney
