      The Octobass is pitched the same as a 32 foot pipe organ stop, which is very common in larger organs. And there are two organs in the world that have a 64 foot stop, that plays a full octave lower. Granted, it's not very practical since the lowest not is only 8 Hz!

    At 1:00 when the the double bass plays F#-D-F# and the octo bass jumps up to A, you can hear the over tones of the octo bass making a beautiful chord with the double bass. The low A fundamental, the C# 5th harmonic, and the F# played by the double bass. All with just the two instruments. What a lovely moment, and a lovely piece, with some lovely instruments!

    • @scottcooper4391

      It's not in the bow - it's the player and the bass itself. I can do close to this (not the thumb position stuff yet) and I use a French bow. Good strings, bridge cut properly, and a smooth fingerboard on a well made bass can do wonders, even if it's not the top of the line.

    As far as I know, the concert doublebass can reach as low as 32 Hz. Below 50 Hz there is little or nothing to be heard, except for the harmonics which confere most of the sound we can perceive from instruments like those here presentes.
    Any case, wonderful!

    • @bobjacobson858
      @bobjacobson858 5 років тому +1

      The low A on the piano is about 26.5 Hz. If you get a double bass into a room with good acoustics and have decent strings, you can appreciate the sound of the open E string (the lowest on the instrument) which is a much better sound than the lowest E on the piano.
      I'm looking forward to hearing the octobass in person at the MIM in Phoenix so I can see how much of its range I can appreciate.

    • @shusterpiano4146
      @shusterpiano4146 5 років тому +5

      @@bobjacobson858 Yes, the low A on a piano is theoretically 25 Hz, but there is actually no energy at all at that frequency. We piano tuners have to use the 5th overtone and above to tune with. Our ears infer the intended pitch from the stack of overtones above it that we do hear.

    • @bobjacobson858
      @bobjacobson858 5 років тому

      @@shusterpiano4146 Thanks; I didn't know that. In general most of the low notes on a piano are rather difficult to appreciate. For example, the pitch of an open E string on an ordinary double bass, when bowed, has a much more definite and pleasing sound than the lowest E on the piano. I suspect this is in part due to the fact that a piano must be somewhat of a "jack of all trades" with the "trades" being all the different pitches. However, I would expect a concert grand piano to have a noticeably better sound at the bottom than, let's say, an upright or compact because the strings can be longer enabling them to yield greater energy. (Maybe we need a piano that plucks the string rather than hitting it with a hammer!)

    • @garrisonaw
      @garrisonaw 5 років тому +2

      I can clearly hear an E(-1) on a pipe organ, which is only 10hz. Below that, I can only feel the notes down to its lowest pipe, the C(-1), which is only 8hz. The lowest note on the Bösendorfer Imperial Grand piano is a C(0) - the same as the lowest note on the octobass, which is 16hz.

    • @bobjacobson858
      @bobjacobson858 5 років тому

      @@garrisonaw It would be fun to hear such such frequencies, or at least be in a setting where I had the opportunity (including the appropriate acoustics). From what you have said plus my own limited experience with large bottles (from which the pitch can be much lower than my original impression due to the clarity of the sound, if I've described it correctly) makes me suspect that moving air (i.e., like a flute or whistle) as opposed to a string or membrane probably provides the best sound, thus allowing the best opportunity to appreciate low frequencies. Perhaps some electronic sounds (such as a synthesizer--I've listened to the ending of the song "Lucky Man" by Emerson, Lake and Palmer, but still am not certain as to what pitches are reached) can approach or duplicate it. I should look this up, but if I'm correct (and I'm not trying to be "disrespectful"!), a pipe organ is essentially a gigantic collection of whistles of varying pitches limited only by the sizes of the individual whistles added at both the top and bottom ends (with the latter, of course, requiring substantial space plus an adequate volume of air!), thus providing a clear tone at each frequency without (or at least minimal) interference from harmonics.
