That's interesting - how's walking with your back to the traffic, especially on a shoulder-less road, safer than walking while facing the traffic?

I have been taught to walk on the left since I was a child (I'm 65). It is the safest - you are facing oncoming traffic and you will see the vehicle first and can step out of the way quickly if it appears the vehicle doesn't see you. Always wear a reflective vest or clothing. You can see what's coming AT you and not up behind you. If you are not facing oncoming traffic, you don't have a chance if the driver doesn't see you. I also think this is a 'traffic law' for pedestrians. I often see signs on narrow roads telling pedestrians to walk on the left. The driver also has the responsibility to know that they are driving on narrow roads with blind corners and to be hyper aware that there could be an oncoming pedestrian 'just around the corner' - slow down!
