Hi Lisa! Drainage is important for sure. We have some gravel at the bottom and the slats between the boards act as holes. You can drill holes too if needed and cover with screen so the soil doesn't flow out of the holes onto the deck.
Hi Richard, it is either 'phyllostachys aureosulcata spectabilis' or 'phyllostachys aureosulcata aureocaulis', a type of running bamboo. We keep it on the upper deck so that it cannot find it's way into the soil and run away!
