Thank you, Ricci. I've been lazy about using those modes, because I mostly shoot between wildlife and landscapes, and can quickly change between those. But, I think it's time to start taking advantage of these, and your input is welcome! Thanks for all the details!

Another very informative video. As an extensive user of the U settings I just wished it was possible to title each individual user setting on the menu page as I often forget what I’ve set to which. It would be nice as with your copyright text to be able to give U1 etc a title on the menu page so that when I select U1 it would tell me what it is. Just a thought which for me would be exceptionally useful.

Myself I have a Z7ii and use U1 for studio, U2 for landscapes and U3 for when I am using my 500mm PF as I think that lens it help having its own base settings. Thank you. Great video. Your setup is quite similar to my own.
I generally use U1 for shooting static subjects with a tripod, U2 for fast action high speed handheld, and U3 for low light handheld shooting.
My physical button functions are kept the same across the board, but I do make a lot of changes to the "i" menu.

Hi, thank you for the video! There are a couple of issues I’ve had with the U saves. The first is that the mode dial setting is common when you switch the video switch e.g. you can’t set the Photo mode to Aperture Priority on U1 and then save Manual on the Video switch for U1. The second relates to how Nikon set the minimum shutter speed for video in either A mode or S mode: it drops to 1/25 instead of a more sensible 1/50. I’ve ended up with three U settings as follows: U1 (Family Shots) Aperture Priority (wide open) Auto ISO with 1/200 min shutter and C-AF auto area AF with tracking on Fn1; U2 (Family scenic) Aperture Priority (f/8) Auto ISO with 1/50 min shutter and S-AF with small focus point; U3 Manual for photo and video.

Good video as always. I have a user menu set up for black and white photography with aid lenses. Using focus peaking zoom in focus etc and black and white selected in camera as it helps to view things in monochrome. I usually shoot sport with my other setting so quite different set up. I’m going to look at using the the third user menu for some minor adjustments to my sport set up as that may be quicker than adjusting my base settings.

Thanks Ricci this was a really useful video (and timely because I was literally starting to look for info on the U buttons on the z7II as I felt certain this would help my workflow when shifting between different types of shooting
A couple of really dummy questions if you don't mind
1 - If I understand from the video correctly you put the camera into MANUAL mode, dial in all the various settings as you described and then SAVE to the U buttons?
2 - When in-field simply switch to those modes to get the camera into the set of settings you want for a scenario e.g. landscape, wildlife, portraiture etc?
3 - When in a U mode you can adjust the settings e.g increase the shutter speed, change the focus mode etc but they will only remain changed in that mode until you shut off the camera (which then kinda acts as a reset button) with the camera returning to the dialled in settings you chose for that U mode when turned back on?
4 - If I understood you correctly you can essentially have 6 sets of settings dialled in (3 stills and 3 video)?
    Thanks for such helpful content!

Great video, as always. Thank you. You said that I can have 3 user modes for stills and 3 user modes for video. Well, my experience is different. On my Z50 when I set stills to aperture priority, save it to U1, switch to video set it to manual and save it to U1, and then switch back to U1 stills the camera is then in manual mode, not aperture priority as I set and saved before. The same happens with other settings like WB. So, the stills and video customization are together. They are not separated. In the end I have to use stills U1 for stills and video U2 for video, so that they don't overwrite each other. That is why I don't bother with user mode in video.

    • @Thorgal_04

Thank you for your User tutorial. It made me revisit my settings and issues from a year ago. Noted below..maybe; do I properly recall that the User Settings are not saved to the .bin file for the Camera Settings? I think this was the case when I had Nikon do a service on my Z6 and the camera was reset to factory settings. When I loaded my .bin file; it turned out the User settings were not included. If this is the case, is there a workaround, other than re-installing/setting all User settings? Thanks again for your great videos.

Hey Ricci. Awesome video as always. I have my z6ii setup in a similar fashion but I was wondering one thing - is there any way to load up your setting from a User setting into the Manual one? I ask because I shoot astro and have U1 setup for this with dedicated settings. During a shoot, I'll start at U1 but slowly tweak these settings through the night until I get to a bunch of settings that aren't much like the originals! Sometimes I then power the camera off and its lost all my revised settings, hence why I'd like to load them into M mode. Hope thats an ok explanation!

Very useful info Ricci. So the U1, U2, and U3 can be used in both photo and video modes right? I presume you have to flick the photo/video switch on the top right of the EVF to indicate what situation you are shooting in, then go into Menu and Save settings as you pointed out? Are there any settings that don't carry over/save in video mode? It is bizarre that you can't assign the Release Mode to CH though. I wish Nikon had a dedicated Custom Video Icon on the Mode Dial itself so you could simply flick it round to that and know that any video settings are saved like on other cameras such as most Panasonic, Fuji X-S10, Olympus, or Sony which also has the S&Q Mode too. So much more logical to the way I shoot anyway!

I don't understand why Nikon excludes release mode from being stored in the user settings. To me it is an important setting that should be stored as well especially when switching between landscape and sports/kids settings frequently. Contractionary to your overlaid text in the video you can store FX/DX mode in user settings ... at least with latest firmware.

If people haven't looked into the User (U) modes on their Z (or DSLR) they really should.... I didn't really use them on my DSLR but am sort of kicking myself now that I use them on the Z cameras... why didn't I do this earlier? I basically have three different User modes set up for the three types of photography I do most of the time (Landscape, Portrait/Model, and the Travel/Street). So for example, for U1 (Landscape) I'll have the camera set to f/11, ISO 64 (on my Z7's) and shutter speed of around 1/80s (basically it's the Sunny 16 rule adjusted for f/11) with IBIS turned off (as I'm usually on a tripod) and matrix metering, etc. Then for portraiture (U2) I usually do my basic go-to default for portraits : ISO 100, 1/125s, f/5.6, and then for mode 3 (U3) for travel and street/general photography, I usually will turn on wide-area single point AF, Auto ISO between 100-1600 and f/5.6 in most cases (I might reset this to use Aperture mode with auto ISO turned on as I find myself wanting to change mostly aperture when shooting on vacation/travel or doing street. I'm not so concerned about ISO as long as it's reasonable so I will let the camera decide within a certain range).
Of course these are my settings but they usually get me to where I want to be quickly and provide me with a starting point for each type of photography so I don't have to go change a bunch of settings when I want to switch modes--these let me minimize the amount of adjustments I need to make when doing various types of photography....
NOTE: One thing I will note (that I don't think is covered well in the manuals) is that it seems the Z cameras will "remember" what mode (P, S, A, M) you used when saving the User mode, so if you make your settings in Aperture Priority and then save the User mode, it will use Aperture priority mode. Same for if you set them in Manual mode or Shutter priority . I have found it (personally) easier to just set everything up in Manual mode and store the User modes... that way I can change things like aperture and shutter speed independent of eachother (and not have to use exposure compensation as much) since it's not locked into Program, Aperture or Shutter priority mode for that User setting. Just something to be aware of as some people (on forums) have done this and don't know why the camera is stuck in Aperture priority mode, for example. I mean set the mode if you want to if you find yourself using Aperture or Shutter priority a lot, but just realize the camera does remember the shooting mode when you save your User modes.

Some Z7(I) kamera settings with the latest software are NOT saved by U1, U2 or U3.
I have been trying to program a custom setting for BIF including a handful of variables. I frequently used Ux on my D7200, one for mingle with flashlight, one for outdoor in sunshine and one for macro. On this camera I could do changes which remained even if the camera was shut off, as long as I didn't change to another Dial setting
Now on my Z6 I can select a U-setting, if I do some minor changes these will disappear when the camera is shut off and everything returns to saved setting. As often when taking pictures on partys, I like to switch the camera off, when there are nothing to photograph, and all my settings for that evening are gone. I have to save every change I do, and I don't like that. Why cannot Z-cameras remember small changes in settings when the camera is shut off, as long as I do not touch the dial mode selector, as in D7200?
Are my U settings saved when I do a backup of my settings?
Since there are a total of some 250 settings (just for picture!) I have done a spreadsheet to keep track of what settings I have. It would have been nice to export the settings to a file which I could import in a spreadsheet.

In Nikon Z6ii when I save any of the shutter "Release Mode" options into the U1, U2 or U3 dial, it doesn't stay as saved. That is terrible !
I use my U1 for high-speed shooting, but when I recall the U1 mode back, for example the "Continuous H" option no longer exists, then I always have to remember to put that option back manually.

I just can't use the Ux modes on my Z7 for one major reason. They reset to the saved settings if the cam turns off, which is just too much of a pain. I wish they worked more like other Nikon cams and retained settings until you switched to a different mode. I like that you can save settings to U1 for example, but I may want to tweak one item for a certain situation. That gets reset to the U1 mode settings if the cam turns off, and I always forget to set it back. It's uncommon for me to need those exact settings without any change for a given situation. So, those modes are not of much value to me.

I would love to use these modes but one thing really puts me off: Why isn't there an option for shutter speed and/or aperture to use "the last used" one? Why do I have to dial this in? My way of shooting lets me turn the camera off and on regularly. So if my U1-U3 setting is a bit off from what the current situation needs and I manually adjust this, I have to do this again and again whenever I switch off the camera while in U1-U3 mode - in M, A or S mode these settings are not touched when turning the camera off and on. In U-mode this drives me crazy - and stopped me from using them. And the obvious solution would be so easy: Dial in a fixed shutter speed if you want to and a "remember last state" option if you what to have your settings without a fixed default. Or does anyone know a way to work around that (meaning: having my preferences in U1-U3 modes setup from M mode but exclude shutter speed from that)?

I thought for a second that you had pointed out what I was doing wrong. However applying your advice did not help or change anything. Se my original comment:
Some Z7(I) kamera settings with the latest software are NOT saved by U1, U2 or U3.
I have been trying to program a custom setting for BIF including a handful of variables. However, ONLY some of them are remembered and recalled by the custom setting requiring additional manual changes before and after using the custom setting. Some of the modes: Release mode, AF area mode, Choose image area and Focus mode are NOT remembered by the custom settings.
Please tell us which camera variables that are supposed to be programmable and remembered by custom settings and which ones are not.

Do you have the latest firmware installed? Firmware 3.30? Download link: downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/399.html
I don't know if what you are experience is the same confusing behaviour I experienced when i got my Z50, that you can change the usermode settings (U1, U2, U3) even if you are not in any of them, and that you actually have a hidden U0 mode in the camera. I'll try to explain.
You move your mode-dial to U1, make the change you like and then save the new settings to U1. You then go on to setup U2 and U3 the same way.
After a while you want to make a change to U2, so you make the change in the camera and go save the setting to U2, but then when you move the mode-dial to U2, the mode has change to something you do not recognize. The reason being, that you had your camera in S-mode (shutter priority) when you made the change you saved to U2. So, what you did, was saving the camera settings from S-mode to U2, not save U2 with a smal change to U2.
As I said, the camera has a "hidden" U0 mode. Every setting you make to the camera in P, S, A and M mode is automatic saved into this U0 user-setting as the cameras default setting and is shared over all four modes. You change release priority while shooting in A-mode, the same setting is now used in S, M and P-mode as well.
Over time when using your camera, you start to get this U0 mode, set up to how you like to use your camera, and that might very well be close to how you had setup U2.
But where you specific changed 10 setting to be saved into U2, you only made 7 setting changes while in U0, but that is enough to make the confusion happen.
Edit: Remember, even your I-menu settings (quick menu) are being saved separately in in each of the "four" user modes as well as any custom button settings.
Remember I said that the U1-U3 by default was set to P mode and that if you reset a user-mode, it would go back to P mode? This P mode is the P-mode-state the camera was in before you made any change to the camera.
Let's say you have set up Back button Focus [BBF] in all your user modes. When you reset U1 the U1 will revert back to a state before you set up Back button focus [BBF].
So, even if BBF still work in all other modes on the camera, including P, A, S, M it won't work on U1.
Therefore, the second time you set up any user modes, it is best to start in a mode where most of your camera setting changes already exist, like your S mode.
I do not know if this was to confusing or if it helped you in any way, but it is the best I can do. Hope you find a solution to your problem.

    • @bengtenyman
      @bengtenyman 3 роки тому

@@HJN67: Thanks, You explain most of it pretty well. My solution so far is that I normally shot BIF with my Canon R5 but I am temporarily waiting for its return from Canon repair. Meanwhile I wish that all modes in Nikon Z7 remembered their last settings which would allow me to normally shoot in A and switch to M for BIF. Meanwhile I will forgo the Z7 U modes and use the "i" button with its (programmable) and touch sensitive variables to make necessary corrections going between A and M. I believe that if Nikon was not hurting financially they would already have fixed this.
P.S. It does not appear to matter what mode you are in when you change mode variables. They carry across to M, A, S and P no matter what. What matters is what U mode you save them to, except that U-memories do not save all selected variables. So I have to compromise. I accept the same "Release mode" "Continues" in both U-BIF and Aperture mode but I reprogram U-BIF to use FX which I want as standard in Aperture mode, and accept to reset temporarily in U-BIF, when preferred. do not save all selected variables. When I go back to A-mode and find that "Choose image area" is DX instead of FX and "Release mode" is "L" instead of "Single".

  • @KamenMinkov

I feel like this is a downgrade to the shooting/custom menu banks system used in cameras like the D500 and the D850. A useful compromise would've been to add a setting denoting whether to automatically save the last settings (instead of having to manually go to the menu and initiate it) - that would've gotten them close to menu banks.
Also, I think the mode dial should be permanently unlockable (instead of having to press the lock button every time you want to rotate it). I shot a D7000 (which did't have a lock on the dial) for years and I haven't had a single accidental switch.
