Lyrics: S'when I's in old Fort Worth in eighteen and eighty three Some old Mexican cowboy come steppin' up to me Sayin' how'r you young fella', how would you like to go And to spend another season 'neath them hills of mexico? Well, I had no employment, and back to him did say: It's according to your wages, according to your pay He said I'll pay to you good wages, and often too, you know, If you'll spend another season 'neath them hills of mexico Well I went up to that cowboy and I offered him my hand And he gave a string of horses so old they couldn't stand And I nearly starved to death boys, and I mean to let you know That I never saved a dollar 'neath them hills of mexico I sent up for my wages, on a steamboat I did go How them bells they did ring, those whistles they did blow! How them bells they did ring, those whistles they did blow, On that god forsaken fortune 'neath them hills of mexico
Meredith, such a beautiful rendition of this song. You deliver the vocals with amazing confidence, yet bring a feminine beauty to how you ring the tones on your strings. And the cicadas in the back ground just bring a majestic extra to this. This might be my favorite version of this great song, thank you so much for sharing this.
I've been listening to this over and over... It's so good. I read the lyrics and your voice has given a depth to the words that aren't there when you read them off the page. There's a tragedy and irony there that is very beautiful and you give it life. I know that probably sounds lame, but this song has really given me some strength in a dark time. I am a veteran and also have worked 20-years as a hospice nurse, so, I like to think (in my self centered way) that I've been around the block, and a song can sometimes lift you up and give you direction. This is one of those songs. Thank you... either way, whether my comments seem bullshit or not, it's really from the heart.
There is research being done on insects, birds, etc. Seem to react to music played outdoors. Apparently it must be live, not just played on a speaker. I think that's what we're hearing here!
I'm from eastern KY. I roomed with a Holcomb at a summer camp. He was a musician too. In those days, I didn't know about Roscoe. I wish I had, I'd have had some questions (he was from the same area). He helped me to learn tunes out of the hymnal (I can't read music). God bless you. You play this old tune very well.
Every time UA-cam cycles this in to my feed, I give it another listen, and am always glad I did. That plucky banjo and your voice just get me right here ❤ well done
Hearing this for the first time, seven years late. The clarity of the banjo just has me mesmerized. EVERY single note is distinguishable, but you can still easily hear the melody. It’s not like everything is just turned to 11 and anything is drowned out, it’s simultaneously blended but so clear. It is just brilliant, and I love every part about this song❤️ keep on keeping on MM🤘
I have been listening to you for years. I live in cny which is central ny, the mohawk valley in NY. ❤ you are part of my life for like ten years it feels like. I wish you the best. 🎉 I love this song and I know you do too. ❤ 🎉 ❤ that means something because we are connected to greatness ❤
I’ve got her whole album “Forest Not Far Away” with this on it. A full album with Reuben’s Train, Arkansas Traveler, Snowflake and so many other good ones on it. Plenty of life in her voice. A real keeper.
Its still my favorite song. Meridith you are unique. For me are you up there with Bob ,Leonard and Van with your interpretation and honesty in the songs you sing.I love you.
Wow. This is so beautiful it takes me to another place. So much talent both with banjo and voice. I'm new to clawhammer but totally inspired watching this.
Very good, I'm sitting on my back porch watching the ducks swimming across the pond. I know it has nothing to do with the hills in Mexico. But it's still soothing and awesome.
I keep coming back to this. You have a touch, a sound, to your playing that I do not hear from others. Your clawhammer is uniquely yours and very enjoyable to listen too.. 😍
As everyone has said this is a stunning rendition, by far the best I've ever heard - Meredith adds so much in her delivery. That said the tone of that banjo is unreal - can anyone name it (if it's a brand one)?
There are singers and songs that just resonate with your soul. This is one for me.
You still do this song better than anyone else 💚
Couldn’t agree more. So much better with a female voice, and it helps that’s she’s awesome on banjo.
Absolutely, spot on!
A chip off the old black. Beautiful father, Gordon Lightfoot had a beautiful daughter, and they share beautiful music. Thank you❤

Just heard The Longest Johns with this song. When looking around for another version (what I always do if I love a song) I stumbled over this one.
When I see young people play this great traditional American music, it gives us hope.
