  • Here's my take on Duke Ellington's 'It Don't Mean a Thing', with lyrics by Irving Mills, recorded live at Mr. Vain. / mrvainbrisbane
'It Don't Mean a Thing' was written in 1931. The title was the catchphrase of Ellington's trumpeter, Bubber Miley, and was one of the earliest uses of the term 'swing' in popular music. It has also been sung by the Mills Brothers, Al Hibbler, Mary Ann McCall, Rosemary Clooney, Mel Tormé, Ella Fitzgerald, June Christy, Ilene Day, Kate Smith, Annie Ross, Chris Connor, Gloria Smyth, Ernestine Anderson, Nina Simone, Louis Armstrong, Joe Williams, Helen Merrill, Helen Shapiro, Diane Schuur, Carmen McRae, Betty Carter, Anita O'Day, and many others. I hope you enjoy it!
