  • Safer, cheaper, better-smelling insect repellent is coming thanks to recent research from UC Riverside that lets researchers know what a bug’s nose knows.
Most mosquito repellent since the 1950s has contained a compound called DEET. It works well, but it can also melt your swim trunks, and give you a rash. On top of that, it’s too expensive to be a major factor in parts of the world where malaria and other mosquito-borne illnesses are a serious problem.
UC Riverside’s Anandasankar Ray set out to find a better alternative, but first he needed to figure out how a mosquito’s nose works - and why DEET works in the first place.

That's really cool, I hope we can get some better-smelling deet alternatives on the shelves in the near future.

Love these videos! Not only are they informative but enlighten me on something so simple, I'm dumbfounded we have not found a solution! Props to Ray's work, inspiring and cultivating innovation where most of us never knew we needed it. I hope this channel can continue to grow as the world needs to know more, and you're helping that happen. (Also, from an editing point, these videos are gorgeous! Love the animations and editing in general!)

Thank you for the video but what has come of this research? Is there any products we can get that are as effective as deet but not harmful?

you make the statement that deet that harmful effects on our body but then don't list any of those effects. You just say that have a chemical reaction with other materials. My body's not made of plastic.
