As a member of the team who helped create this project it's amazing to see this kind of detailed walkaround, it really warms my heart to hear how this could inspire real model railroad projects.       Thanks for making it! So many hours must have gone in to create it all. Some sections of track are still a mystery to me!
      The great thing about this software is that you can really make history ( or a track plan) come to life.

      Well I can't go into too much detail as a couple of them are still VERY early in the design stage, but we're still working on expanding the Beer Line! The layout has actually gotten even larger since the version in your video and we've got even more on the way. As for other stuff we've released a few other layouts for this game since the Beer Line. Two of them are fantasy layouts with wild and bizarre scenery, but the other two are more grounded in reality.
      First off there's the Mini Beer Line, basically a scaled down version of the original based on a trackplan by Model Railroader Magazine. And most recently we released layout of the Tropicana Juice Train from Florida to New Jersey! That one is heavily scaled down of course. And like I said, we've got a couple more top secret projects in the works.

      @@somerailfan9122 Cool. Let me dive back into rolling line to check it out. Compressing the beer line can be done in so many different ways dependjng on ones modeling interest.
      Which beer line from MRR magazine are you referring to? Or which edition? I am designing my next layout around the Kingsbury branch. See here if you are interested:

    Lakefront Brewery is now in the center building on the bottom of the screen at 22:26. For 9 months in 1998-99 I was the only person living in this stretch from about Cherry St. to the Holton Bridge. 1858 N. Commerce St was an original brick building converted to apartments and I had an in with the property manager. The buildings to the left were torn down and the land was used as a semi truck marshalling yard. The tracks were all paved under and the road was often used for illegal street drags. Now its all condos.

    What an incredible in-depth analysis of this huge layout. In order to build this in real life it would be a life-long journey to complete it. I think you gave some great ideas for using the portrayed scenes, and where you could place this on your layout. Personally I would stream-line it a lot, and also make sure that I don't have "wiggly track" on the layout, as cars tend not to like this! I am looking forward to your 'mini-layout' based on this VR-layout. Have a great weekend!

      PS, the fly-over really puts the scale in perspective. It takes your over 3 minutes to fly over it with your virtual drone. Incredible....

    This is a very nice presentation. While I've heard of the Beer Line before, primarily from Model Railroader, I never knew the depth of it until now. I'm in the initial building stage of an 11' x 18" shelf layout, and there are elements of this that I'd like to incorporate, albeit on a much smaller scale. Thanks.

    This layout is huge and detailed. I found a layout plan online that would be possible to build complete even in O scale; it is titled "plan of New Bronx Freight Terminal of the Central Railroad of New Jersey" with a scale of 1" = 60'. The building that would be the focus of this layout is an oval of 194' 0" by 166' 0" and is surrounded by 2 tracks completely encircling it with 7 pairs of stub tracks turning off the outer loop track into an area that is obviously either paved or at least graveled so street vehicles can access the cars for loading and unloading. The only access to this trackage is by a 2-track rail barge. There are 6 3-way turnouts, 9 regular turnouts on curves, 4 crossings, and 2 interlaced turnouts facing each other. The paired tracks are spaced 12' with at least 36' 0" between the pairs. The land is a 4-sided area bounded by Third Avenue, Southern Boulevard, Lincoln Avenue, and the Harlem River with a 98' 9" transfer bridge with no 90 degree angles except the transfer bridge and inside the building. It looks like the sharpest curve would have about a 90-foot radius so the cars would need to be 40 feet long or less and this would be the domain of an 0-4-0 or small 0-6-0; maybe a small diesel loco. Because of all the pavement track and sharp curves, the turnouts would have to be built with special curved pavement switch points and curved frogs and girder-rail. Pavement turnouts of this period and until WWII, were available with single movable-point switches more akin to trolley track but heavier. If someone wanted to model this as narrow gauge, it would easily fit.

      @@DubaiTrains His layout is the modified track plan and not the one from 1907. It is really cool, even including the added engine house with removable tracks and the added trackage on the other side of the Third Ave. bridge that was added later. I read a lot of the history of the terminal. By using 90 and 104 foot radii, a lot of trackage was included. I did not miss the details too much, after the Pennsy instigated the 3-track barge, it made bringing cars a little easier. There are more switching possibilities with the newer track plan.
      I am working on the design of a model of the first rail bridge across the Atchafalaya River at Morgan City, LA. It had 2 movable spans-one moved sideways to allow the drawspan to move linearly to open for boats.

    Wowow, what a nice scenery, a very great project.
    About the middle, little, elevated 4 tracks yard, what you did to protect your unbreaked cars against natural wind blast and self away running by its own gravity downhill?
    Normally such yards have in direction to the downhill side a small uphill layed track area, so that any unbreaked car cannot run by hard blowing winds downhill by gravity of itself.
    At Langenhennersdorf in Saxony, it happened a terrible shunting accident in the year of 1912, when two unbreaked two axle gondolas, each loaded with ten metric tons of coal, were downhill running by wind blast during shunting procedure. An awaited, uphill coming passenger train could not be stopped on neighbour station, when the both with coal loaded gondolas started to run downhill by its own geavity. It was a very big portion of Luck that nothing dramaticly happened, because the downhill running unbreaked gondolas derailed inside a sharp curve an run into a deep valley just shortly before the uphill passenger train came to pass this sharp curve. The loss of two coal cars were much better than an accident with lot of causalities inside the uphill coming passenger train.

      In modern times in such case with a downhill stretch nearby I think they would use a derail.
      There are also all kinds of protocols in place to ensure that cars are fully parked. I think once uncoupled and parked, the brakman wait a full 2 minutes to ensure the cars didn't move.
      What they did before air brakes? Hope?

      @@DubaiTrains In the past they layed down wooden beams ahead the wheels onto top of of both running rails to protect the wagon agains moving by wind or its own gravity after uncoupling.
      Wagons with hand spill breaks could be breaked but it gave unbreaked wagons, too.
      Inside freight or passenger trains every 6th axle needed to be breaked by a breakman, sitting onto a seat onto top of the car roof or standing onto a break platform aboard a car or sitting inside an elevated breakmen cabin onto one end of the car.
      In the 1890's it gave four different air break systems. Two systems used compressed air and two systems used vakuum air breaking.
      All those systems were single release systems, only.
      After starting breaking, you could not stop the breaking procedure. If you stopped the procedure you needed to await until the vakuum would be available again or by compressed air until all break cylinders were empty and refilled again, sometime too long time to start a second try, than breaking accidents happened like in Ireland at Dublin or at France at the Garre du Montpernasse Station where Locos run over the bufferstop and destroyed the outer walls and crashed onto lower street level.
      By all those accidents the safety 1rst car protected the other cars behind them.

    Very cool! I must have missed the name of the software, but what are you using here? Thanks! I’m planning on including a brewery scene now after watching a few of your videos. I think the operations could be a fun challenge to include.

      A brewery is always a great addition. It brings in so many different types of cars and operations.
      The software is called Rolling line, available on the steam store.

    A person could cut this in half and delete some kaotic extra tracks here and their to achieve a nice switching layout. Also some of the slight elevations adds to the complications and are possible to be done if the layout was done in N scale.

    I have watched and re watched, about 10 times, you dont really cover much of the Pabst brewery tracks?

      Hi David, at 2.25 the Pabst brewery is mentioned. The brewery itself is on the other side of the river. They only had a transloading (from truck to rail) facility as you see at said timestamp. Trucks would pendle all day between the brewery and the rail facility.

      The only remnents of the former Beer Line are a few buildings and a trail that follows much of the original route.
